Part 4 — They mocked the detainee in front of me about a lawyer, but after my silent step the commander’s face suddenly turned pale

Mariana’s phone trembled on the table.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

No one told me to answer it. Still, I did.

“Mrs. Morales?” The man’s voice was calm. “For your husband’s case to be finished, you must tell the federal agency that the recording does not exist.”

“Who are you?”

“A person who can protect your daughter.”

Mariana jumped beside me. Andrés raised his hand and asked me to turn on the speaker.

“I do not need my daughter’s protection from you,” I said.

“Do not hurry. You were silent for seventeen years. Another day of silence will change nothing.”

“It will change things for me.”

I ended the call.

Andrés immediately called a technician. Mauricio locked the door, while Samuel drew the curtain at the window.

That day everything began moving at once.

The internal control group sealed Rodrigo’s office. Federal agents blocked the rear courtyard. The director walked from room to room telling everyone that it was a “misunderstanding,” but his voice grew weaker each time.

Rodrigo tried to call a lawyer three times.

The first did not answer.

The second told him that he would no longer take the case.

The third said only one sentence:

“Your voice is already heard throughout the entire agency.”

In the evening Andrés played the audio recording in the large room. Rodrigo, the director, Samuel, Mauricio, and I were sitting there. Mariana stood beside me.

Rodrigo’s voice came from the recording:

“We will finish Víctor tomorrow. We will stitch together the accusation so that he will not be able to justify himself even before his own daughter.”

No one moved in the room.

Rodrigo sat in the chair and listened to his own voice. For the first time he saw how his words sounded in someone else’s ears. His lips opened, but he could say nothing.

“It is edited,” he whispered.

Andrés placed the audio-analysis conclusion on the table.

“The voice recording, time, device, and continuity of the file have been confirmed.”

“I was not there that day.”

Samuel looked at him.

“But your voice was there.”

Rodrigo lowered his eyes.

The next day Gregorio Suárez was arrested at the airport. He was trying to leave the country with false documents. In his car they found a bag full of money, copies of Víctor’s case, and a small key marked: “Warehouse Twelve.”

In the warehouse they found old accounting books, lists of payments, and the names of the people who had received money for years.

Rodrigo could no longer save himself.

His testimony helped the investigation, but it did not remove responsibility from him. Nor from Gregorio. Nor from the director. The court later established that the bank records created in Víctor’s name had been falsified and that the accusation had been deliberately stitched together.

I stood in the courtroom when Víctor’s name was officially restored.

The judge read the paper.

“Víctor Morales was not a bribe-taker. The evidence presented against him was falsified.”

Mariana squeezed my hand.

I was not happy.

Happiness is for people who acquire something for the first time. I had only received back what had always been mine: my husband’s truth.

That same evening I went up to the second floor of our old house. I had left Víctor’s room almost untouched for seventeen years. His small radio stood on top of the wardrobe. One shoe was visible beside the bed, while the other had been lost somewhere.

His mechanical pencil was lying on the table.

The small marks of his teeth were still visible on the wooden tip of the pencil. Beside it lay the pocket notebook, on whose cover the copper-colored metro card was attached.

I picked it up.

This time it was no longer an object of fear.

It remained as a witness.

Three weeks later I received an offer from the prosecutor’s office. They told me to become an administrative coordinator in the internal control department. At first I wanted to refuse. For twenty-two years I had arranged other people’s folders and thought that my life was only the shadow of other people’s decisions.

!!!  Ve 2:07 ráno jsem zaslechla svého manžela říkat, že k mému zničení potřebuje jediný podpis, ale netušil, že v jeho trezoru najdu důkaz, který obrátí jeho plán proti němu

Mauricio told me:

“You have already proved that one person cannot change the system. But you can prevent one door from being closed inside it.”

I accepted the job.

They gave me a small room with a window from which the city roofs could be seen. Every morning I checked the old records first. I read the names aloud so that no person would become a simple line.

Mariana finished her studies and began working at a nearby school. On Sundays we had lunch together. Sometimes we talked about Father. Sometimes we simply sat by the window and drank tea.

One November morning Mariana brought a little girl. She was her goddaughter, five-year-old Sofia. The child was holding a drawing.

“This is for you, Grandma Elena,” she told me.

Four people stood in a yellow house in the drawing. One had large glasses drawn on, while the other had something round in his pocket.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Grandpa Víctor. Mother said he was a good man.”

The word “was” struck my heart, but this time the pain did not take my breath away.

“He was a good man,” I said. “And very stubborn.”

“Why?”

“Because he would not let go of the truth.”

The first snow came that same week. Snow was rarely seen in Pueblo, so everyone went to the windows. I was boiling cinnamon milk in a small pot in the kitchen. Mariana followed Sofia into the yard.

My phone rang.

An unknown number was on the screen.

This time I knew who it would be.

“Elena, it’s me,” Rodrigo said.

His voice had changed. It no longer sounded confident. It had the sound of an empty office.

“I want you to listen to me at least once.”

“I’m listening.”

“It was not all Gregorio’s fault. I only wanted to keep my job. At the time I thought that if I came to you, perhaps…”

“What did you think?”

“Perhaps you would understand that I was afraid too.”

I looked at the snow through the window. White flakes were falling on Víctor’s old radio, which I had taken outside onto the little balcony.

“Fear is an explanation, Rodrigo. Not an excuse.”

He was silent for several seconds.

“You can say that I was forced.”

“No.”

“Elena, please.”

“I know you were afraid. But you still chose to break my husband. I will not help you bear the consequences now.”

I ended the call.

Mariana entered the room.

“Who was it?”

“The past.”

“And what did he want?”

“For me to save him again.”

Mariana nodded. She asked nothing more.

In the evening Sofia stuck the drawing on the refrigerator. The round object drawn in Víctor’s pocket was actually the copper-colored metro card. I removed it from the notebook, placed it below the drawing, and told the child:

“This is your grandfather’s oldest thing.”

“Will it stay with you?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

I placed Víctor’s card in my palm. Its worn edge rubbed against my finger, as on the first night when I was afraid to discover the truth.

But now there was no fear.

Only peace.

Outside, snow was falling silently.

And for the first time in seventeen years, in our house Víctor’s name no longer meant danger.

Missed the beginning?
