My Parents Bought My Sister an Endless Cruise with My Card, but When They Returned Home, They Found a Letter Pasted to the Door and Dad Turned Pale

My phone screamed at 7:14 in the morning as if a fire had broken out in the house, and the screen said: a $12,700 payment from the card was approved.

First I rubbed my eyes and thought the message was an error. Then a second warning appeared: Ocean View Cruise Company — $8,950. My fingers went numb. My credit card was lying on the table, in my wallet, with the chip facing down. No one should have known its code.

I called Mom. She answered on the third ring. Music and someone’s loud laughter could be heard in the background.

“Mom, why is there a $12,700 charge on my card?” I asked.

“Good morning to you too, Nino,” Marina laughed. “Don’t dramatize. Madison really deserves a good vacation.”

“Did you use my card?”

“We used it. What difference does it make? You don’t travel anywhere anyway.”

The word “we” hurt more than the amount.

“It is my money and my credit history.”

“Money?” Mom sighed. “You spent it on the family. And the family doesn’t count that.”

In the other room Madison shouted:

“Thank you, Nino! I knew you would understand us in the end!”

“Do you hear her?” I asked Mom.

“Don’t ruin your sister’s mood. We have the plane in two hours.”

“This is theft.”

The line went silent for several seconds. Then Marina’s laughter disappeared.

“Be careful how you speak, child. We are your parents.”

She hung up.

Coffee boiled over in the kitchen and left a black stain on the stove. And I stood motionless, holding the phone in my hand, looking at our family from the outside for the first time.

Three years ago, when Dad lost his job, I bought the house. A small house with a brick facade in the suburbs. The mortgage was in my name, I paid the bills, the insurance, and the pipe repairs too. They were only supposed to live there temporarily.

“Six months, maximum,” Dad promised me.

Three years passed.

They had paid neither rent nor offered thanks. And now, as it turned out, they considered the free house a right to use my card as well.

At noon I could not work at the office. I stood by the window and turned over the small copper key tag lying on the desk. It was shaped like a lighthouse. Dad had given it to me on the day I bought the house and told me: “One day I will give this house back to you.”

That evening I called the real-estate lawyer, Levan Kavatadze.

“I want to sell the house,” I told him.

A long silence fell in the phone.

“Are you sure?”

“Completely.”

“Will you warn your parents?”

The copper lighthouse pricked my palm.

“Not yet.”

Over the next few days Levan prepared the documents. The house appeared on the market, a buyer was found quickly, and two weeks later the contract lay on my desk. I told my parents nothing.

On the morning of Madison’s cruise, Mom sent me a photo from the airport. She was wearing white glasses, and Dad was holding a champagne glass.

“Thank you for everything! You are the best daughter!” it said.

I looked at the photo for a long time. Then I reviewed the closing documents and wrote only this:

“Enjoy the trip, Mom.”

Three weeks later they returned. At six in the evening Levan called me.

“Nino, the buyer has taken possession of the house. Everything is finished.”

!!!  Mama m-a renegat pentru femeia pe care am ales-o, dar când a intrat în casa noastră, chipul i s-a golit de culoare

“No one will be waiting for them in the house.”

“A letter has been left on the door.”

At that very moment Dad’s call came to my phone. His name lit up on the screen. I did not answer. He called a second time. A third time.

Then a voice message came.

His voice was shouting:

“Nino, open this door right now! We are at the house and found some kind of letter here! You have no idea what you are doing!”

I closed my eyes. The copper lighthouse was lying on the table.

Then Dad added:

“If you don’t come in five minutes, I will bring out the document that will destroy your life…”

My hand froze at Dad’s last words, but I did not call back. For the first time I heard not anger in his voice, but fear. That fear was supposed to be for me, yet for some reason he himself was carrying it.

Levan came to me at seven in the evening. He was holding a leather bag and noticed the copy of the copper lighthouse hanging on the door.

“Your father gave you this, didn’t he?” he asked.

“Yes. On the day I bought the house.”

“Then today this symbol has changed too. You are no longer the person who maintains their house. You are the owner who took back her property.”

We sat in the living room. A bank statement, the sale contract, and a letter from the credit company lay on the table. The wall clock ticked loudly every second.

“What does the card company say?” I asked.

“Both transactions were made from the same device, but the matter is more complicated. The card was not physically used. The data was entered online.”

“Mom knew the code.”

“Possibly. But we found something else too.”

Levan looked toward the folder and did not open it.

“What?”

“The bank recorded a call that came from your mother’s number. She told the operator that she was speaking in your name and requested an increase to the card limit.”

My heart clenched.

“In my name?”

“Exactly. The recording was officially sent to us. But that is not all.”

At that same moment a loud pounding sounded at the door. I went to the window. Dad was standing in the yard, and beside him were Mom and Madison. Madison was holding a glittering suitcase, as if the cruise had still not ended.

“Nino!” Dad shouted. “Come out!”

Levan looked at the clock.

“Do not open the door until you understand what they want.”

“This is my house!” Dad struck the door with his fist.

I went to the lock, but did not remove the chain.

“It is not your house, Giorgi.”

“You are my daughter!”

“And that is exactly why I let you live here for free for three years.”

“We protected you, raised you!”

“You raised me. And I bought this house, paid the bills, and now you used my card too.”

Mom stepped forward.

“This is a family matter. There was no need to bring a lawyer.”

“When a family steals someone else’s money, it is no longer only a family matter.”

Madison dropped the suitcase on the ground.

“Is all of this my fault? I knew nothing!”

Dad looked toward her.

“Be quiet.”

That one word was enough. Madison’s face changed. For the first time I saw that everything between them was not as solid as I had always thought.

!!!  NEGYEDIK RÉSZ — A fiam fél hajjal érkezett haza a fodrásztól, de amikor Lewis úr bezárta az üzletet, az arca elsápadt

Dad took a folded sheet of paper from his jacket pocket.

“I will file a lawsuit against you. We have the right to live in this house. We lived here for three years, and you cannot throw us outside.”

Levan opened the door slightly and showed the official notice.

“Mr. Giorgi, the house already belongs to another person. You have received a deadline to leave. If you do not take your things out, we will call the police.”

Dad’s hands dropped.

“Nino, you couldn’t have done this. I know how you made them sign the documents.”

“What do you mean?”

He fell silent. Mom looked away.

Levan said quietly to me:

“The main question now is what they are hiding. Before the sale, your father sent another application to the bank in your name. They did not limit themselves to the card.”

Dad chuckled behind the door, but the laughter was false.

“You still will not win. I have a document that will return this house to me.”

“Then show it,” I said.

Dad raised the paper high. The wind fluttered its corner. Mom came one step closer and grabbed his arm.

“Giorgi, don’t open this here.”

“It is already too late.”

Levan opened the bag, took out a dark folder, and placed it on the table in front of the door.

“Before they show you their paper, Nino, you need to see this recording.”

He switched on a small device. My mother’s voice sounded in the room, and I realized that in the next few seconds everything my family had hidden from me for three years was about to be said aloud…

My mother’s voice sounded from the device. The recording was hoarse, but the words could be heard clearly.

“Yes, I am Nino,” Marina was saying. “Increase the card limit to ten thousand dollars. She agrees.”

The bank operator asked:

“Is the account holder speaking herself?”

Mom answered:

“Yes. My voice is simply changed because I am sick.”

The recording stopped.

Silence fell in my house. Outside, rain struck the window, while the paper held in Dad’s hand slowly lowered.

“This… is an edited recording,” he said.

“It is an official bank recording,” Levan replied. “The time, number, and operator’s report are attached.”

Mom turned pale.

“I only wanted to increase the limit. A cruise happens once.”

“In my name?” I asked.

“You promised to help us.”

“I never promised to give you my card.”

Madison leaned against the wall. The handle of her glittering suitcase fell to the floor.

“Mom, you told me Nino knew everything.”

Marina lowered her eyes.

Dad immediately attacked:

“You benefited from this money too.”

“I thought you had agreed with Nino!”

“Everyone knew what was happening,” I said. “Except me.”

Levan took another sheet from the folder.

“Now the second matter. Mr. Giorgi submitted an application to the civil registry claiming that Nino had given him the right to use the house for an indefinite period.”

“That is true,” Dad shouted. “She told me that verbally.”

“A verbal promise does not change ownership. But the problem is that the application has a signature attached to it.”

Coldness poured through my stomach.

“My signature?”

Levan handed me the paper. My name was written on it. The letters resembled mine, but in the final line the pen had been pressed too heavily.

“I did not write this.”

!!!  I came home early and found a stranger wearing my robe, but the moment he saw my key, his confidence vanished

“I know. That is why I compared the document with samples of your genuine signatures. The expert’s conclusion is already ready. This is forged.”

Dad hid his face in his hands.

“I only wanted you not to be able to throw us out of the house.”

“For that you forged my signature?”

“You were taking everything away from us!”

“I sold my house. You tried to take money in my name.”

Levan calmly added:

“The use of this document contains signs of fraud. The bank recording and the credit transactions have already been transferred to the investigator.”

Madison looked at Mom.

“Did you really deceive Nino?”

Mom’s lips trembled.

“I did everything for you.”

“No,” I told her. “You did everything on me. My money, my house, my name.”

Dad took a step forward.

“Nino, we can resolve this. You will cancel the sale, and we will pay the card amount too.”

“How? With the cruise money?”

He had no answer.

That same evening they began packing their things. I did not enter their room. I only stood in the hallway while the sounds of cabinets and the crunch of boxes could be heard. For three years this house had become theirs, and I had become a guest.

At ten at night Levan called me.

“The investigator gave us new information. Your father used another card for the cruise company too. This card was in your name, but an attempt to open the account was recorded one day before the sale.”

“Another card?”

“Yes. And the new owner’s house was listed as the address on the application.”

My heart stopped.

“Did they know my future address too?”

“They did not only know it. They had planned to go there.”

The phone immediately came alive again. It was an unknown number. I answered.

A man’s low voice sounded on the other side.

“Nino, if you want to know why your father signed in your name, come to the old parking lot tomorrow morning. Alone. If you do not come, I will send everyone the video in which you say that you are leaving the house to them forever…”
