The pregnant ex spent six months alone, but on Christmas Eve a call from the hospital silenced everyone in my family

I stopped in the hospital corridor when the nurse told me that before entering Claire’s room I needed to know one thing — she was waiting for me, but she did not trust my family.

Room six hundred fourteen was half-dark. Snow fell against the window, while the radiator made such a noise as if someone invisible were striking the wall from inside with a fist. Claire lay on the bed and folded the white sheet with her fingers during every contraction.

She saw me.

Relief, anger, and such exhaustion appeared in her eyes at the same time that seeing it would bring even the proudest man to his knees.

“You came,” she said.

“I came.”

“Don’t tell me that everything will be all right.”

“I won’t.”

“And don’t tell me that you’re different this time.”

I took her hand. A plastic hospital bracelet was around her wrist, and her name was written on it in black ink. This small bracelet said more than my six months of silence.

“I’ll simply stay here,” I told her.

“Can you at least do that?”

My heart contracted.

“I can.”

I spent the next forty minutes counting her breaths. I gave her water, straightened her hair, and let her fingers squeeze my hand down to the bone. Once she gripped me so hard that I thought her nails would sink into my skin.

“You deserve it,” I exhaled.

“What?”

“Everything you’re doing to me now.”

She smiled from the pain, but the smile quickly disappeared.

At eleven o’clock at night, the doctor said that the baby’s heartbeat had weakened. All the sounds in the room suddenly changed. The machine began beeping rapidly, the nurse adjusted the pillow, and the doctor asked Claire to turn onto her side.

“What’s happening?” I asked.

“It isn’t an emergency yet,” the doctor replied, although there was no calm in his voice.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Ethan, if something happens…”

“Nothing will happen.”

“Don’t interrupt me. If something happens, take the baby to my sister. Not to your father. Not to your mother. To your sister, Lauren.”

“Why are you telling me this now?”

She slipped her hand beneath the pillow and pulled out a small dark-green folder. Its edges were worn, and its clasp shone brass-colored. I recognized the folder immediately. It was the one in which Claire kept the lease agreements for our first apartment.

“You have to read this when the baby is born,” she said.

“What is it?”

“The reason I stopped answering your calls.”

The room door opened at that very moment. Lauren rushed in, holding a wet umbrella, and behind her stood my father’s lawyer.

The lawyer took one step toward me and reached for the folder…

The lawyer’s hand almost touched the green folder, but Lauren grabbed him by the wrist and stopped him sharply.

“Leave the room, Victor,” she told him.

“Mr. Caldwell’s father asked me to come here.”

“This is a delivery room, not a family council.”

“I only want to verify the document.”

Claire rested her head against the pillow. Her face was covered with sweat, but her gaze had become strangely piercing.

“Tell my father never to touch me again,” she said.

Victor looked at me.

“Ethan, your family is trying to resolve the situation peacefully. There are several legal issues concerning the baby’s birth now.”

“Which issues?”

“Custody. Housing. Medical expenses.”

“Claire has already said that she wants nothing.”

“Mrs. Bennett is now in serious condition and may not fully understand…”

“Get out of here,” I said.

My voice was so calm that I did not recognize it myself.

Victor pressed his lips together.

“You may regret this.”

“It won’t be the first time.”

Lauren opened the door and called for a security guard. The lawyer left, but before the door closed, he told me:

“Your father himself will come in two minutes.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“I don’t want him here.”

“I won’t let him in.”

“You used to get entangled in his affairs every time.”

Those words hurt me more than any accusation.

“I know.”

The doctor looked in again and said that the baby’s heartbeat had improved, but the labor was not over. When we were alone in the room, Claire pushed the folder toward me.

“Six months ago, on the evening you left, I sent one message to your phone.”

“I remember. You wrote that you needed time.”

“No. I wrote: ‘If you leave now, don’t come back only because of your conscience.’”

“I didn’t receive that message.”

Claire stared at me.

“I sent it.”

Lauren stood beside the door and was turning pale.

“Ethan, that night I saw that message on your phone,” she said. “Then it disappeared a few minutes later.”

My breath caught.

“Did someone have access to my phone?”

Lauren took a small charger and a memory card from her bag.

“I found them in Dad’s office. There was a backup of the phone and an email archive there too.”

“Why didn’t you tell me until now?”

“Because I didn’t have enough evidence. Now I do.”

Claire opened the green folder. The first sheet was a contract bearing my family’s seal. On the second page it said that, immediately after the baby’s birth, Claire waived all parental rights.

“This is forged,” I said.

“Yes,” Claire replied. “But that isn’t the worst part.”

She took a small voice recorder from the folder’s lower pocket. A red light came on.

Claire pressed the button.

My father’s voice sounded in the room.

“If you lose my son, I’ll take everything from you. Your job, your home, even the baby.”

I leaned against the wall. Claire closed her eyes, as if that voice had entered her body once again.

The recording continued.

“I’ll tell Ethan that you left. And you will never see him again.”

Then my own voice sounded, quiet and confused, with words I did not remember ever saying:

“Dad, don’t do this.”

Lauren covered her mouth with her hand.

“You were there?” I asked.

“In the next room. I heard everything.”

Suddenly heavy footsteps sounded from the corridor. My father’s voice came from behind the door:

“Ethan, we need to talk. Now…”

Claire handed me the recorder and told me:

“Don’t open the door until you find out what else he hid…”

My father kept knocking outside the door, but only Claire’s heavy breathing could be heard in the room.

“Ethan, open up,” he repeated. “This is all a misunderstanding.”

Lauren pressed the recorder more firmly into my hand.

“Listen to the end,” she told me.

I pressed the button.

My father’s voice sounded again, this time more clearly.

“You think my son loves you? He is only frightened by the baby. If I pressure him correctly, he will leave you himself.”

Then Claire’s voice sounded.

“I’ll tell Ethan the truth.”

My father laughed.

“You can’t. I have already had a message loaded onto his phone as if you no longer wanted to return to him. Tomorrow morning he will be sure that he made the choice himself.”

The strength left my knees.

That night I really saw a message from Claire. I thought she had left me. I thought I no longer wanted a place in my child’s life. That was why I left.

“I didn’t write that,” Claire said. “That night I asked only one thing: that you stay.”

“Why didn’t you tell me afterward?”

“Because the next day your father sent two men to my apartment. They told me that if I said anything against you, he would reach my family through your company. My sister worked at his foundation. He paid for my mother’s medical treatment.”

A tear ran from her eyes.

“I was afraid. But I still decided to have the baby.”

The door opened. My father entered the room despite the security guard’s resistance. Small drops of snow melted on his dark coat. His face was calm, but his eyes were not.

“Claire, this recorder means nothing,” he said.

“It will be enough for court,” Lauren replied.

“You can’t take a family conversation to court.”

“A threat is not a family conversation,” I said.

My father looked at me.

“Son, you are in an emotional state now. This woman is trying to drive a wedge between us.”

“You separated us yourself.”

For the first time I saw his face change. It was as if the air in the room suddenly became cold.

“I protected you.”

“No. You controlled my life.”

“You were grateful to me for that.”

“I lived to earn your approval.”

Claire screamed from a contraction. The doctors rushed into the room and made all of us step back. The baby’s heartbeat sped up again. My father stood at the door, but this time nobody could pay attention to him.

Twenty-five minutes later my child’s first cry sounded.

I cried.

Claire opened her eyes and asked me with a tired smile:

“Is it a boy or a girl?”

“A girl.”

The doctor placed the little girl on Claire’s chest. She wore a thin white cap with a yellow star embroidered on it.

“Name?” the nurse asked.

Claire looked at me.

“Mia,” I said.

“Mia Elena,” Claire added.

I was kissing her hand when my phone rang. The call was from Lauren’s lawyer.

“Ethan,” the woman said, “the police have issued a search warrant for your father’s office. But that isn’t the main thing.”

“What else happened?”

“We found transfers in that backup. Your father was not paying only Claire’s sister. He was also taking money from the hospital’s maternity fund.”

“What does that mean?”

For the first time fear sounded in the woman’s voice.

“It means that threatening Claire was not his only crime. Several families may lose life-saving assistance. And in one of the files there is your signature, as if you approved all of this…”

I looked at the screen. My father had already left the room.

At that moment I realized that fighting for Claire was no longer only about correcting the past. Now my father was using a lie built in my name against the whole city…
