On Christmas Eve, my husband embraced another woman, and in the morning an attorney was left speechless by my actions

On Christmas morning, when Roman Vaskari returned home, my wedding ring lay under the Christmas tree, the hospital bag had disappeared, and the door to the baby’s room was wide open.

Several hours earlier, his large house looked from outside like an ice fortress. Twelve hectares were sinking into snow, guards stood at the iron gate, and the small red lights of the cameras blinked in the darkness. Inside, the scents of cinnamon, orange peel, and fir filled the air.

I stood at the kitchen island and rolled out cookie dough, although my belly was so large that bending forward was difficult.

“Sit down before the baby is born holding a protest sign in its hand,” Sofia told me and took the rolling pin from me.

“I am pregnant, Sofia, not made of glass.”

“You are thirty-seven weeks pregnant and more stubborn than gravity.”

I laughed. The baby moved a foot against my ribs.

“You see? It agrees with me too.”

“This baby has your character,” Sofia chuckled.

“Roman says it will have his character.”

Sofia shrugged.

“Mr. Vaskari thinks everything belongs to him.”

At that moment, I thought it was a joke.

At fifteen minutes past five, Roman came in. Instead of the dark sweater prepared for dinner, he was wearing a charcoal-colored suit. His hair had just been combed, an expensive watch shone on his wrist, and he smelled of bergamot and costly perfume.

“Are you going somewhere?” I asked.

“I have business in the city.”

“Today?”

“It is important.”

“On Christmas Eve?”

“I know what day it is, Savannah.”

There was barely any irritation in his voice, but I had already been studying such small signs for months. The phone placed face down. Calls taken on the balcony. Missed doctors’ appointments. An empty chair beside me at the childbirth class.

I told myself that Roman had more responsibilities than others. Everyone repeated that.

The phone rang on the granite surface.

Roman reached toward it, but it was too late. I saw the name on the screen—Celeste Armani. And the first line of the message sounded louder than the ringing: “I’m already here. Don’t keep me waiting tonight.”

The baby moved inside my belly.

“Celeste?” I asked.

“Savannah…”

“Are you going to her?”

“The matter is complicated.”

I almost laughed.

“You are leaving your pregnant wife alone on Christmas Eve to meet her?”

“You are tired.”

“Answer me.”

“You are emotional.”

“I said, answer me!”

Roman came closer to me and lowered his voice. Earlier, this tone had always worked on me.

“It concerns business.”

“Then why does she write ‘tonight’?”

Something flashed in his eyes. Only once. But it was enough.

I had known Celeste for two years. She worked as a consultant at Roman’s investment company, although in recent months she appeared everywhere: at parties, charity dinners, and private meetings. Once I saw Roman’s hand resting on her waist. Exactly where he had once preferred my touch.

“Don’t go,” I told him.

Roman stopped. Probably because it was the first time I had asked him to stay.

“I can’t stay.”

At that moment, my marriage ended.

Not when suspicion took hold of me. When he looked at his watch.

He kissed me on the cheek and left.

“I’ll be back by midnight.”

The door closed. His perfume remained in the kitchen, while the table was set for two people.

People think betrayal causes shouting. Sometimes it leaves only silence.

Sofia stood by the pantry door.

“Mrs. Vaskari?”

“I am fine.”

She looked at my face.

“No, you aren’t.”

“No,” I said honestly for the first time.

I went upstairs. I took the hospital bag from the closet and packed clothes, documents, money, a charger, and the baby’s medical records. Then I took from Roman’s safe all the documents on which my name was written.

Entering the baby’s room almost destroyed me. Green walls, a walnut cradle, a blanket sewn by Brooke’s hand, and a photograph of my father in which I was holding him when I was six months old.

I approached the crib and then noticed that a wooden floorboard was slightly raised. Roman had never touched this place before.

I knelt, slid my fingers into the gap, and lifted the board. A small leather bag appeared underneath. When I touched the lock, the door handle in the hallway slowly went down…

I had the lock under my fingers when the baby’s-room door handle went all the way down.

My breath caught.

“Mrs. Vaskari?” Denis, the head of security, called.

I quickly took the leather bag and slid it under the bed. The door opened. Denis held a small flashlight, although every light in the house was on.

“What do you want?”

“The camera in the lower courtyard went out for several minutes.”

“And that’s why you came into the baby’s room?”

He looked away.

“Mr. Vaskari ordered us to check every room.”

Those words sent a chill through me. Roman should not yet have known that I intended to leave. Or he already knew.

“Get out, Denis.”

“Mrs…”

“Now.”

When the door closed, I took out the bag again. Inside were three small memory cards, an old phone, and a folded piece of paper. I recognized my father’s handwriting on the paper.

“If Roman is looking for this, it is already too late. Call Eli Mercer.”

My father had died two years earlier in a truck accident. Then Roman told me that the driver’s brakes had failed. He paid all the expenses at the funeral and stood beside me the whole night.

I thanked him.

Now I held his handwriting in my hands, and for the first time I wondered why my father would have hidden this bag in Roman’s house.

I turned on the old phone. There was only one audio recording on the screen.

Before I could listen to it, the sound of car tires came from below.

Roman had returned.

The clock still showed half past ten.

I slid the leather bag under the pillow and went down the stairs. Roman stood in the entrance. Snow was melting on his shoulders, and Celeste was beside him.

That woman was clinging to his arm.

Not simply clinging. Roman was embracing her with both arms, Celeste’s head rested on his chest, and her face was as frightened as if someone were chasing her.

Roman saw me.

“Savannah, it isn’t what it looks like.”

“That is exactly what people say when everything is exactly as it looks.”

Celeste looked toward me.

“You must leave this house.”

“Who are you to tell me that?”

Roman moved in front of her.

“Go back to the room.”

“I am speaking to your wife.”

“In this house, my rules apply.”

His voice was still calm. That was more frightening than shouting.

“Then today you broke your rule for the first time,” I told him. “I will no longer obey you.”

Roman grabbed my wrist. Not hard, but enough to leave the marks of his fingers.

My body tensed from fear, although my belly hurt even more.

Celeste stretched out a hand toward Roman.

“Let her go.”

He stopped.

“Don’t interfere.”

“If you touch her one more time, I will call the police.”

!!!  A férjem kétszázezer dollárért akarta elvenni az újszülött ikreimet, majd amikor aláírtam, az anyja hirtelen elsápadt

For the first time, Roman looked at her as if she were a stranger.

I gripped the stair railing. I felt the warm, polished surface of the wood under my fingers and understood that I had to act before fear won over my body again.

“I am going to my room,” I said.

“No,” Roman said. “You are not going anywhere today.”

“I was not planning to go anywhere. You showed me that I can no longer stay here.”

Celeste lowered her eyes. Guilt was visible on her face, but I still did not understand why.

I went upstairs, took the hospital bag, and found Eli’s number on my phone. He answered on the third ring.

“Savannah?”

“My father told me to call you.”

Silence fell.

“Where are you?”

“At Roman’s house.”

“Then lock the door and trust no one.”

“What did my father know?”

Eli’s breathing grew heavy.

“Did you find the bag yourself?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen to the recording. But not in the house.”

The sound of heavy footsteps came from below.

Roman was coming up the stairs.

I had the phone at my ear and the bag in my hand, while the baby moved inside me as if it too felt the approaching danger.

“Eli, I can’t lock the door anymore.”

“Savannah, wherever you go, go with Celeste. She is not your enemy.”

The door handle moved.

“Then who is?” I asked quietly.

Eli was about to answer, but I could still hear his breathing on the line. Then he told me four words that pulled the floor out from under my feet…

“Roman will take your baby away.”

“Roman will take your baby away.”

I could not yet comprehend Eli’s words. I only saw Roman’s shadow stop outside the door.

“Savannah, go out through the window,” Eli said.

“I am on the third floor.”

“Get to the balcony. Celeste will be there.”

Roman knocked on the door.

“Open up.”

There was no longer calm in his voice.

I opened the window. Cold air struck my face. Celeste stood on the balcony, a dark coat wrapped around her white dress.

“Bring the bag!” she shouted to me.

“Why are you helping me?”

“Because he did all this to me too.”

The door shook.

I stepped onto the balcony. Celeste held out her hand and led me to the metal stairs descending toward the garden. Snow waited below. The pain in my belly intensified, but I did not stop.

A black car was waiting in the yard. Sofia was behind the wheel.

“Get in!” she shouted.

Roman’s guards appeared at the back, but Celeste raised her phone toward them.

“I have already sent the address and the recordings to the police.”

The guards stopped.

The car broke through the gate and drove onto the snowy road.

No one spoke until we entered the underground parking lot of a small hotel on the outskirts of the city. Eli was waiting there too. He held a wood-colored folder in his hand.

“Now tell me everything,” I said.

Celeste took off her coat. A purple scratch was visible on her wrist.

“Roman hired me three months ago to check your financial accounts,” she said. “But I soon realized that he was actually building a case against you.”

“Why?”

Eli was placing the folder on the table.

“Because after the baby was born, he intended to declare you an unstable spouse. Roman wanted full custody, while under the marriage contract you would receive almost nothing.”

“But why this?”

Celeste lowered her head.

“Because money disappeared from the charitable foundation registered in your name. Its accounting trail led to you.”

!!!  Tizenkét napig mozdulatlanul feküdtem a kórházi ágyon, miközben a férjem és a nővérem a halálomra vártak, hogy elrabolják a fiamat és megszerezzék mindenemet

I could not breathe.

“I never signed such transfers.”

“I know,” Eli said. “Because the signatures are forged.”

He took the old phone and played the only recording.

For the first time, I heard my father’s voice after his death.

“Savannah, if you are hearing this, Roman took everything he could. He used your signature on the foundation accounts. I found the documents. I knew him before you knew him. One day before the accident, he told me that if I went to the police, he would hurt you first, and then take the baby away from you.”

The sound of a chair was heard in the recording.

“I gave the recordings to Eli, but I did not manage to keep all the copies. The remaining evidence is in Roman’s house, under the floor of the baby’s room. Do not trust his fear. Fear is his strongest weapon.”

The phone stopped.

My hands were wrapped around my belly. I thought that if I hugged the baby tightly enough, I would protect it from the world.

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was working as an investigator against Roman,” she said. “The city prosecutor’s office needed to prove his financial scheme. Getting close to you was my assignment. But then I realized that you were his prisoner too.”

Eli opened the folder. Inside were contracts, bank statements, and notes written in my father’s hand.

“This is enough to freeze all of Roman’s accounts,” he said. “But we need those three memory cards.”

“They are in the bag.”

“No,” Celeste suddenly said. “You left the bag in the car, didn’t you?”

My blood froze.

My hospital bag was no longer at my feet.

Sofia had left it in the car.

Eli reached for the phone, but at that exact moment his device rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

He answered.

“Mercer speaking.”

For several seconds, there was only the sound of wind on the other side of the line. Then a man’s voice sounded.

“Your client is alive, but the bag is already with us.”

Eli went pale.

I looked at Celeste. On her face I saw the same fear she had had when she first met Roman.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The man chuckled.

“The person who knows where your daughter is hiding before she is born…”

And then the line went dead.
