Part 4 — My Husband Forbade Me to Eat at the Wedding, but When a Strange Man Held Out His Hand to Me, My Mother-in-Law Turned Pale

At that very moment my phone lit up again.

It was a message from Mauricio.

“Come back home. Let us resolve everything.”

A second message followed immediately.

“If you do not come back, I will also produce evidence against you.”

Arturo looked at the screen and shook his head.

“Now he is trying to regain control.”

“And what if he really has something against me?”

“Then it is precisely now that you must stop being afraid.”

From the warehouse we went straight to my lawyer’s office. The room smelled of coffee, dust, and old wood. We laid the documents on the table. My lawyer, Elena, read each page carefully.

“There are fraudulent transfers here,” she said.

“All with my signatures?”

“Some are genuine. Some are altered copies.”

“What does that mean?”

Elena raised her head.

“It means that you are not only a victim. You are the main witness.”

Mauricio called immediately.

I did not answer the first time.

Nor the second.

On the third call Elena told me:

“Answer. Put it on speaker.”

“Lucia, where are you?” His voice was falsely calm.

“In a safe place.”

“You have no idea what you are doing. Come home and let us forget this evening.”

“I will never forget that evening.”

“I was doing everything because of you.”

Elena signaled with her eyes that I should continue answering.

“Then why did you write that you wanted to evict me from my house?”

The line fell silent for several seconds.

“Because I was angry.”

“And why did you say that I came only for free food?”

“You should not have acted in front of everyone as though you were part of the family.”

His own words echoed through the room.

Mauricio said exactly what he had said at the wedding. The phone’s microphone recorded everything. And for the first time I heard his voice from the outside—cold, cruel, and completely unfamiliar to me.

!!!  Bei der Beerdigung unserer Zwillinge stellte sich mein Mann mit seiner Geliebten gegen mich – dann erlosch sein Lächeln

My stomach clenched. For ten years I had convinced myself that he was simply tired, that his mother controlled him, that love sometimes hid behind harsh words.

But now his words were no longer my memory.

They had become evidence.

“Lucia, can you hear me?” he shouted.

“I can hear you.”

“Then come back.”

“No.”

I ended the call.

That same day the police sealed our house. Teresa was arrested at the scene for financial fraud and attempting to destroy documents. Mauricio tried to flee, but they stopped him at the airport. The payments for the hall rented for Camila’s wedding also became part of the investigation.

I was not happy about their arrest.

Strangely, but no.

I was simply tired.

Several weeks later I entered my own house. The living room was almost empty. The expensive furniture had been taken away, and on the walls there were only pale squares left by the sun.

In the bedroom the wardrobe was open.

On my shelf one thing had remained—the ivory leaf-shaped hair clasp. To Mauricio it had always been a “cheap little thing.” I took it in my hand and looked at it for a long time.

That night I slept for the first time without hearing his footsteps in the neighboring room.

Three months later I rented a small apartment in another district of the city. In the morning I began working at an accounting company. A green plant stood on my desk, and through the window I heard the noise of buses every day.

At first my heart raced at every unknown call.

Then that passed too.

Arturo called me once a week, only to find out how I was. He never asked whether I had forgiven Mauricio. He probably knew that forgiveness and returning were not the same thing.

One evening my nephew, little Nico, came to me. He sat at the table and drew with colored pencils.

!!!  Me humillaron por llevarle comida al anciano que todos ignoraban, pero al entrar aquel automóvil negro, la sonrisa de Beatriz desapareció

“Aunt, is this your new house?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Does your father no longer yell at you here?”

The pencil fell from my hand.

“No, Nico. No one yells here.”

He drew a small woman on the paper. The woman had a leaf-like clasp on her head, and beside her was a large window.

“This is you,” he told me. “Because now you have light.”

That night I looked at his drawing for a long time.

In May the court determined that the transfer of the property had been carried out by deceiving me. The house, company, and warehouses legally remained with me. Part of the stolen money from the frozen accounts was returned. Returning the rest would take years, but for the first time I was no longer in a hurry.

Mauricio was sentenced.

Teresa sent me a letter.

“You destroyed our family.”

I did not answer.

Later I received a message from Mauricio.

“Come, talk to me at least once. Everything could have been different.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. The old Lucia would probably have answered immediately. She would have explained, calmed him, and blamed herself.

But I was no longer that woman.

I wrote:

“It would only have been different if you had chosen the truth.”

Then I blocked the number.

On the morning of the first winter I stood by the window. Light snow covered the city. Nico’s drawing lay on the table, and beside it was my old ivory clasp.

I put it in my hair.

I looked at myself in the mirror and for the first time did not see an abandoned wife, a poor guest, or someone else’s family helper.

I saw a woman who had finally locked the door of her own house herself.

The leaf-shaped clasp shone calmly in my hair.

And this time I was waiting for no one.

Missed the beginning?
