Part 4 — My Mother Made My Pregnant Wife Kneel Under the Table, but When My One Question Was Heard, Her Smile Began to Disappear

I opened Caleb’s message again.

Emma gripped my wrist.

“Don’t go alone.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

Four hours remained until six. During that time my mother called seven times, and twice she left voice messages.

In the first one she was crying.

“Luka, no one is against you. Emma has divided the whole family.”

In the second, her voice was already cold.

“If you don’t come today, you will never again make decisions about the child.”

I saved both recordings.

Lawyer Zurab called me that same morning.

“I no longer represent your mother,” he told me.

“Why?”

“Because the signature indicated on the document is suspicious, and I am not going to file a false statement.”

“You knew about this matter?”

He was silent for a long time.

“I knew they were preparing a temporary guardianship request. I didn’t know they were forcing your wife.”

“Now you know.”

“Now I know that this is already a criminal matter. Go to the police before someone creates another version.”

For the first time his voice did not sound like that of a man standing on my mother’s side. It sounded like that of a person who was afraid of losing his own name.

We went to the notary anyway, but not alone.

With me were Lawyer Nino, Doctor Irakli, and two police officers, who had recorded Emma’s statement beforehand. Emma still could not leave the hospital, so she remained in the room and was connected to me by video call.

The old notary’s office was on the second floor. The stair railing was cold and dusty. Caleb was waiting for me in front of the door.

“You were supposed to come alone,” he told me.

“You aren’t alone either. Mother sent you.”

His jaw tightened.

“I’m simply telling you that you must not destroy this family.”

“You destroyed the family the night you made my pregnant wife kneel under the table.”

My mother was sitting in the notary’s room. In front of her lay the folder, and on it was the same red pen with which she had made me sign all my documents in childhood.

“All this can end peacefully,” she said.

“It ended peacefully on the day I took Emma by the hand and brought her out of the house.”

!!!  Weniger als einen Tag nach meiner Hochzeit sah ich meine vergessene Liebe mit einem Kind, und meine Frau wurde plötzlich kreidebleich

“You don’t understand what she is doing to you.”

“Now I know exactly what you were doing to me.”

Nino opened the folder.

“Here is a guardianship application, a demand for a share of the house, and consent as if Luka were ready to testify against his wife.”

“That is his signature,” Mother said.

“No,” I told her. “It is a copy taken from my old signature.”

The notary looked at the paper and lost the color in his face.

“Mrs. Marina, I did not certify this document in my office.”

“You forgot.”

“No, I did not forget.”

Nino turned on the recording.

My mother’s own voice sounded: “Luka will do all his life whatever the family tells him.”

Then Caleb’s voice: “If he doesn’t sign, we’ll say that Emma attacked everyone.”

My mother stood up from her chair.

“This was recorded illegally!”

“You installed the camera in your house,” I told her. “We only saved the recording.”

Caleb moved toward the door, but a police officer stepped in front of him.

“You are not going anywhere.”

For the first time my mother could say nothing.

Then I realized that her power lived not in her shouting, but in my silence. As long as I believed that fighting for the family meant enduring everything, she could cross any boundary.

When I returned to the hospital, Emma called me.

“A call came from Caleb’s number,” she told me.

“What did he say?”

“Only one sentence. He told me that if I didn’t help your mother, she would put everything on me.”

“And what did you answer?”

Emma smiled for the first time, although her eyes were full of tears.

“I told him that from now on, his fear was his burden.”

That same evening the police questioned my mother and Caleb. Denise gave a statement. At first she was trembling, but in the end she said that everyone at that table knew why the bones were lying in front of Emma.

A case was opened against them for violence, coercion, and forged documents. A court order was issued banning them from the house. And we had already changed the locks.

Several weeks later my mother heard her own words for the first time.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Vi a mi esposo tomado de la mano de otra mujer, pero cuando mi suegra se acercó, su sonrisa desapareció

It did not happen in a courtroom. It happened in the lawyer’s office, when his department was checking the recordings. Her voice played aloud:

“If you tell Luka that I pushed you, I will convince everyone that you are dangerous for the baby.”

My mother lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t mean it that way.”

Nino answered:

“That is exactly how it sounded.”

Mother looked toward me.

“You are my son.”

“And that is why I believed you longer than I should have.”

The words came out heavily, but I did not step back anymore.

That night I returned home alone to take things from the baby’s room. The room was almost empty. A small wooden crib stood by the wall, and beside it was a blanket sewn by Emma. On the windowsill I found her small clay star, which she had carried by hand since childhood and which had not fit into her bag that evening.

The old table was still standing in the dining room.

I found one small fish bone by the leg of the chair.

I wrapped it in a napkin and threw it away.

Then I ran my hand over the table.

For the first time the house no longer seemed like a family to me. It was only walls that had heard too much and stayed silent for too long.

Three months later our daughter, Ana, was born.

The first snow came that morning. I was standing by the maternity ward window when Emma placed the baby in my arms. Ana’s fingers were tiny, but she gripped my finger so firmly, as if she already knew that this time I would not let anyone go without protecting her.

“She has your eyes,” I told Emma.

“And your stubbornness.”

“I hope only the stubbornness that wakes at the right time.”

We moved into a new apartment on the other side of the river. We arranged our life bit by bit. I worked at an architectural studio in the mornings, and bathed Ana in the evenings. Emma opened a small pastry shop. There was always the smell of cinnamon in the kitchen.

Only after knocking did a guest enter the house.

It was a simple rule.

For us, it was a new life.

One morning Ana drew a house on a sheet of paper. It had four windows, a big sun, and three people by the door. In my hand she drew a small key.

!!!  I came home with news that could change our lives, but my husband handed me divorce papers and his mistress stopped smiling

“What is this?” I asked.

“Our door,” she answered.

Several days later I received a letter from my mother. Inside there was only one sentence: “Give me the chance to be a grandmother.”

Emma read the letter and looked at me.

“You decide.”

I looked at the sheet for a long time.

Then I replied:

“Being a grandmother begins with trust. And trust is what you yourself destroyed. At this stage I cannot allow you to return to our lives.”

I sent the letter and put down the phone.

I did not block her number out of hatred.

I blocked it for peace.

Months later I passed by the old house. Dust lay on the windows, and no one entered the yard anymore. I put my hand into my pocket and found Ana’s little drawn key, which I had cut out of the paper and she had given me as a toy.

When I returned home, I hung it beside our new door.

Emma asked me:

“Why did you keep it?”

“Because before, someone else had the key.”

Ana called from the room:

“Daddy, should you lock the door?”

I put my hand on the lock.

“Yes, my little one.”

The door locked quietly.

This time the key stayed with us.

Missed the beginning?
