My Husband Abandoned Me in the Hospital, and My Parents Threw Me Out of the House — But After My Calm Answer, Grant Lost His Smile

The ambulance doors had not yet fully closed when Grant said in a calm voice, as if he were reading the weather forecast: “She simply fell. That happens to her often at home.”

And at that time I was struggling with three broken ribs, a bruised eye, and air trapped in my lungs. The white ceiling flickered. The monitor beside me rang sharply every few seconds, as if someone invisible was reminding me that I was still alive.

For six years Grant Sullivan had been the perfect husband to everyone. He brought expensive roses when the mark of his fist remained on my face. He whispered apologies to me, and then said in my ear: “You make me do this yourself.”

That evening, on the third floor of the hospital, I called my mother. My fingers were trembling so much that I entered the number incorrectly twice.

“Mom, I’m in intensive care,” I barely said. “Grant hit me. This is not the first time it has happened.”

Silence fell on the other end of the line. I thought my mother would cry. I thought my father would get into the car and come pick me up.

But my mother only sighed.

“Elena, you chose this marriage yourself.”

“I know, but I need a safe place now.”

“Don’t bring your problems onto us,” she replied coldly. “Deal with your mess yourself.”

My father took the phone.

“On Friday we are closing on the purchase of the new house,” he told me irritably. “We don’t have time for your drama now. Go home and fix your marriage.”

I looked at the ceiling. The bracelet fastened to my wrist pinched my skin. It was a thin silver bracelet with a small glass moon hanging from it—my mother had given it to me in childhood and then told me that even on the darkest night I should remember where the sky was.

At that moment I understood for the first time that my mother no longer believed that the sky existed. Or, more precisely, she no longer believed in me.

“Okay,” I whispered. “I understand.”

I ended the call and for a long time heard only the sound of the monitor. A void heavier than the pain pressed on my chest.

Then I called Olivia Chen. She was my corporate lawyer and the only person who understood my real role in Grant’s company.

“Elena?” She immediately understood that something was happening. “Where are you?”

“In the hospital. And I’m ready.”

“For a restraining order?”

“For everything.”

Grant thought that his consulting company belonged entirely to him. In reality, six years earlier I had prepared the founding documents, financial models, and partners’ agreements. Grant had never read the last pages even once. My thirty-eight percent was written there.

Olivia exhaled quietly.

“Are you sure? There will be no turning back.”

“For six years I have been moving backward. Now for the first time I am moving forward.”

Within an hour the bank received notice about the cancellation of my guarantee. And by evening the purchase process for my mother’s and father’s house was suspended. Their forty-five-thousand-dollar down payment would not be returned.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Volví de una noche con mi amante y encontré la cuna vacía; cuando mi abogado leyó el mensaje, dejó de respirar

They called me. My mother—seventeen times. Grant—twenty-three times.

I answered none of the calls.

In the evening, when a wheeled cart rattled in the hospital corridor, I opened an encrypted folder on my phone. The folder was called: “Insurance, taxes, transfers.”

The first document was already open. Then the second. Then the third.

My finger was about to touch the screen when the room door opened heavily from outside and Olivia entered with a thick folder in her hands…

Olivia closed the door with her foot and put the thick folder beside the bed. Her heels struck sharply against the floor, though her face wore such calm that this was precisely what frightened me.

“Don’t try to sit up yet,” she told me.

“What did you find?”

“First tell me, what else had Grant been putting in your name lately?”

Suddenly the sharp smell of antiseptic swept over me in the room. The small glass moon on the silver bracelet touched my chest and grew cold with every touch.

“Everything he made me sign, the house renovation, insurance, taxes… I thought they were ordinary documents.”

Olivia opened the folder.

“These were not ordinary documents.”

My signature was visible on the first sheet. Below it was written that my share in Grant’s company had been temporarily transferred to a family trust.

“I did not sign this,” I said.

“I know. The signature was cut out of an old document and inserted into a digital file.”

Something caught in my throat.

“Then why didn’t you finish the sentence?”

“Because this is only the beginning.”

That same morning the bank placed a temporary restriction on two of Grant’s accounts. Within several hours his employees realized that Grant was no longer the company’s only signing partner. My thirty-eight percent remained valid and gave me the right to block important decisions.

Grant finally managed to call me. His voice was excessively calm.

“Elena, darling, you are angry. When you come home, I will explain everything.”

“For six years you have been trying to explain why your hand kept moving.”

“This is a family matter. Don’t involve lawyers.”

“You involved them yourself when you began signing in my name.”

Silence fell over the line for several seconds.

“If you continue this, you will lose everything.”

“I have already lost it. I’m just no longer losing myself now.”

I ended the call. My hands were trembling, but this time not from fear. The person who for years could silence me with a single look could not control me for the first time.

That evening Olivia took a small memory card out of the folder.

“This is from the cameras in Grant’s office,” she said. “The file accidentally ended up on your phone when a backup was being made.”

“What can be seen?”

“Not yet. We are checking the sound of the video.”

“Olivia, just tell me.”

She leaned toward me.

“On the night when he said that you fell down the stairs, you were not alone in the house.”

The ringing of the monitor cut through the room. My heart seemed to understand in advance that this file concerned not only Grant’s punishment.

!!!  მან ორი თვით უქმებოდა ურთიერთობას და ბინაში ნივთებს ტოვებდა, მაგრამ ჩემი პასუხის წაკითხვისას სახეზე ფერი დაეკარგა

The next morning Investigator Sarah Hale came to the hospital. She was holding a small bag and put it on the table.

“Is this your bracelet?” she asked me.

“Yes. Why?”

“A small piece of the glass moon was found at the scene. Grant said that you fell down the stairs. But the fragment was not found by the stairs.”

“Where was it?”

Sarah looked at Olivia.

“In the trunk of his car.”

The air in the room grew heavy.

“Then why did he leave me there?”

Sarah opened the bag, but had not yet taken out the object.

“Because that night Grant was not acting alone. And before we say this aloud, we need to know who was standing beside him…”

Sarah’s words remained in the room, as if the cold air entering through the window had fastened them to the wall. Olivia put the memory card into the laptop and started the video.

Grant’s office appeared on the screen. The time stamp showed ten at night. I was sitting in an armchair, with his dark jacket wrapped around my shoulders. Grant was walking back and forth.

“Sign,” he was saying.

“I’ll read it first.”

“For six years you have had everything because of me. And now suddenly you have become a lawyer?”

My voice was trembling in the video.

“This is the transfer of my share. Why should I give you thirty-eight percent?”

Grant came close to the camera. His face was fully visible.

“Because if you don’t give it to me, I’ll tell your parents how much money you transferred from the company account.”

“I didn’t transfer it. You took it.”

The door opened in the frame.

My father entered.

My breath caught. Olivia stopped the video, but it was already too late. I recognized my father’s face—he was wearing the same gray coat that he had worn that morning at the house-purchase office.

“Continue,” I said quietly.

The video started again.

“Elena must sign,” my father said. “The bank is waiting for an answer tomorrow morning.”

“She ruins everything,” Grant replied.

“Then frighten her. Just don’t kill her. We need her guarantee.”

My body froze on the bed. White spots began flickering before my eyes.

In the video Grant grabbed my hand. Then the frame shook and my scream could be heard. A few seconds later my father passed beyond the camera.

“Use the stairs,” he said. “Tell everyone that she fell.”

Olivia turned off the video.

No one spoke.

Sarah slowly took the fragment of the glass moon from my bracelet out of the bag.

“This was found in the trunk of your car. The camera recording and the examination match each other.”

“My father knew?” I asked.

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“He did not only know. He sent three false applications to the bank in your name.”

Olivia handed me the second sheet.

“These are the transfers. Grant used the company’s money as the down payment for your parents’ new house. And he left the debt in your name.”

!!!  A húgom kitiltott az esküvői fotókról, majd amikor egy ezüstszínű luxusautó megállt a birtok előtt, elsápadt

I understood why they had begged me to become the guarantor. This house had not been their dream. It was their salvation, which they were supposed to pay for with my neck.

The phone rang. My mother’s name appeared on the screen.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I answered.

“Elena,” my mother sobbed. “Your father simply did something bad. Grant was angry. You don’t want the family to fall apart, do you?”

“Were you there that night?”

My mother fell silent.

“Mom, tell me.”

“I was waiting in the car,” she said with difficulty. “I didn’t know he would go so far.”

I closed my eyes.

“You knew they wanted to take my signature from me.”

“We needed money.”

“And I needed my life.”

I ended the call.

Sarah closed the bag.

“Now we have enough evidence for a restraining order and an arrest.”

Olivia nodded, but her phone immediately rang. She read the message and her expression changed.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Grant transferred all the company’s remaining assets to another firm.”

“To whose firm?”

Olivia turned the screen toward me. The owner of the new company was my brother, Lucas.

“He has left the country,” Sarah said. “And before the police find the address, Grant intends to erase everything.”

But at that very moment another message arrived on Olivia’s phone. The sender was Grant.

“Elena, if you want to know why your parents abandoned you, come to the old station tonight. Alone.”

I read his last words and a strange calm poured into my heart.

Grant still thought he had power over me through the secret. He did not know that Olivia had already forwarded the message to the investigator and police cars had started toward the old station.

But the heaviest truth I was to learn that night came not from Grant, but from my family…
