Part 4 — I Came to My Ex-Husband’s Wedding with Our Children, but When His Mother Saw Them, the Glass Fell from Her Hand

The siren was coming closer.

Eleanor looked around the room, and for the first time I understood that this wedding had never been only a wedding for her. She needed witnesses. She needed to humiliate me so that everyone would believe I was the enemy.

Now all the witnesses stood against her.

Ethan took out his phone.

“Mother, call the lawyer.”

Eleanor was about to answer, but her lawyer, standing by the stairs, shook his head.

“Mrs. Montgomery, I no longer represent you in this matter.”

“You would not dare.”

“I already dared. I will not sign the use of a false document in your name.”

Eleanor opened her bag, as if she would take a way out from it. She found only a small shard of the broken champagne glass. She cut her finger, and a drop of blood fell onto the white napkin.

The police officers entered within several seconds.

“Mrs. Montgomery, we have several questions for you.”

“This is my house!”

“Today it is a crime scene.”

She pointed her hand toward me.

“She arranged everything! This woman buys everyone with money!”

I did not answer.

For five years I had waited for someone else to convince them what I was like. Now, for the first time, I no longer needed that.

Ana stood beside me.

“Miranda, we fully checked the recording. It contains your pregnancy story, the doctor’s name, and the payment amount. And in the second file Eleanor asks the lawyer to prepare the plan for taking the children for the day after the wedding.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“I trusted her.”

“So did I,” I told him. “Until I heard with my own ears what she was saying behind my back.”

The police officer turned on the recorder.

Eleanor’s own voice sounded through the room.

“Miranda is weak. If the children remain in her hands, they will never become Montgomerys.”

Eleanor froze.

It was the first moment when she heard her own words from someone else’s mouth. Her face changed. As if the woman from five years earlier, who had calmly destroyed me in the divorce room, suddenly stood before her.

“Turn it off,” she said.

Ethan shook his head.

“No. We will listen to the end.”

The recording continued.

“We will tell Ethan that Miranda invented the pregnancy. He will believe it. Men always believe what is more convenient for them.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Did I say that after you told me there was nothing?” he asked.

Eleanor could not make a sound.

“You convinced me that I had betrayed you,” Ethan said. “And I believed you.”

His voice was not angry. That was exactly why it was heavy.

The wedding did not take place that evening.

The guests left silently. The white roses remained on the tables. The cake stood untouched, while by the kitchen door, at table twenty-seven, no one sat.

The next day Eleanor was temporarily arrested for falsifying documents and attempting to take the children illegally. The investigation established that the money paid to the doctor came from her personal account. The doctor also admitted everything.

Ethan asked to meet with me.

“I am not asking you to take me back,” he told me two days later, in my office. “I only want to get to know the boys.”

“They are not an object that a lost father can take back.”

“I know.”

“Trust will not return through words.”

“Then how?”

“In small steps. And only when they feel safe.”

He nodded.

“I will start where you tell me.”

For the first time I saw in him not a Montgomery, but a man who had paid the price of his own weakness.

A week later I played his recording for the children. Liam asked:

!!!  PARTE 4 — Guardé mi vestido de graduación durante cincuenta y cinco años, hasta que Daniel volvió y una confesión hizo que mi hermana palideciera

“Is he really Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was he not with us?”

The answer to this question was painful for me too.

“Because adults sometimes make the wrong choices out of fear.”

Noah showed me a picture of our family drawn on the wall. There were four figures: me, Liam, Noah, and Caleb. A fifth figure stood in the corner, small and still uncolored with pencil.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Dad,” Caleb said. “We do not yet know what color he is.”

The meetings with Ethan began slowly. The first time he brought the boys books. The second time, an old wooden puzzle. The third time he sat on the floor with them and for a whole hour could not figure out which dinosaur was a predator.

The boys laughed.

And I stood on the threshold, learning how to protect my children without closing the door completely to their hearts.

In three months the court forbade Eleanor from approaching the children. The case involving the false documents was still continuing, but her power in the Montgomery family was over. Ethan rented an apartment separately from his mother and never again tried to pressure me against my will by using his surname.

I moved the agency from downtown Chicago to a bright building by the lake. In the mornings I took the boys to school, then went to the office. On my desk there were always three small pencils, one blue, one yellow, and one red. The children said that this was our team.

The first snow came at the end of November.

Liam pressed his nose against the window.

“Mother, can the road be seen now?”

I touched the pendant hanging around my neck. For the first time in five years I was no longer wearing the silver compass out of fear. It was simply with me.

“It can,” I told him. “We choose the direction ourselves.”

!!!  Part 4 — I Found My Silent Daughters Singing When I Came Home, but One Whisper Made My Protection Lose Its Color

That evening I received a message from Ethan.

“Could we start over at least once? Not as husband and wife. As people.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote to him:

“We have already started as people. I do not want to go back.”

He sent me only one word.

“I understand.”

And this time I really believed him.

In the evening the boys brought me a drawing. Four people stood in the snow. The fifth figure was no longer in the corner. It too stood with us, but they had left distance between everyone.

I stuck the drawing on the refrigerator. Then I stood by the window and watched the compass’s small needle.

It pointed north.

And for the first time I no longer needed a path.

I myself was the direction.

Missed the beginning?
