When My Husband’s Mother Considered My Home Her Property, I Started Playing by Her Rules and Mauricio’s Face Suddenly Changed

That morning Mauricio’s mother opened the door of my bedroom as if not I, but her things, were kept there. I had just come out of the shower, water was dripping from my hair onto the floor, and I had only a thin robe wrapped around my body.

Graciela did not even apologize. She stopped at the threshold, looked me up and down, and dryly chuckled.

“How comfortably you live. My son works, while you bathe until midday.”

I clutched the robe tighter over my chest.

“I work from home, Mrs. Graciela. I have explained this to you more than once. And this is also my home.”

“It is my son’s home,” she corrected me. “If I have the door code, I can enter. There is no nonsense about asking permission in a family.”

We lived in Mexico City, in the Del Valle neighborhood, on the fifth floor. I created pages and advertising materials for small companies, so I spent most of the day in the room arranged beside the living room, at two monitors. We gave Graciela the door code when Mauricio’s father ended up in the hospital and we wanted her to leave food if we were not home.

But she turned that code into a key.

She came when Mauricio was in court, at a meeting, or supposedly traveling outside the city for work. As soon as she entered, she opened the refrigerator, checked the cupboards, and sometimes even pushed at the bedroom door, as if she had to make sure I was doing something there correctly.

One morning, when I had worked until three o’clock the previous night, she woke me at seven.

“Get up. A married woman should not be arranging herself in bed at this hour.”

“I worked all night,” I whispered.

“Sitting at a computer is not work.”

That same week she turned off my computer because, according to her, I had “typed enough,” and I had to learn to prepare Mauricio’s favorite sauce. In front of two neighbors she said:

“Poor Mauricio. He married a woman who thinks working means sitting on a chair.”

The neighbors smiled awkwardly. My face, meanwhile, burned as if a hot pan had touched it.

That evening I waited for Mauricio. When he returned home, he did not even lift his head from his phone.

“Your mother came in again without asking. Today she humiliated me in front of others.”

“You know what she is like. She has no bad intentions.”

“She opened the door of our bedroom.”

“She is my mother, not a thief.”

“Then we will have to change the code.”

Only after that did he look up.

“Don’t you dare. That will be disrespectful.”

I looked at him for a long time. Protecting my private space turned out to be disrespectful, while his mother’s intrusion was family love.

“Mauricio, you have to set a boundary.”

“You have to stop dramatizing. My mother leaves you food, she takes care of you. Many women would wish for such a mother-in-law.”

That night, his words finally broke something inside me.

Two days later, while Mauricio’s phone was charging beside the bed, a message appeared on the screen. I did not want to read someone else’s correspondence. I only needed the code to his parents’ house. In a few seconds I saw it and memorized it.

I waited for his next business trip.

At six ten in the morning I stood in front of their house. My palms were sweating, but I did not knock on the door. I entered the code.

The door opened.

Graciela came out of the bedroom with tousled hair.

“What are you doing here?”

“I decided to come visit you. Family is family, after all.”

Before she could say anything, I turned on the bedroom light. Don Roberto sat up frightened.

“Have you gone crazy?”

“Why? You can enter my bedroom, but I cannot enter yours?”

That morning I still did not know that my little revenge would soon reveal a much more terrible truth. When I opened my laptop in the kitchen, a new message lit up on Mauricio’s phone. I read only the first sentence and my breath caught. Then I slowly reached toward the phone…

I picked up the phone, but the message had already disappeared. For several seconds I stared at the screen, as if the words might rise back out of it.

Graciela was standing behind me.

“Leave my house immediately.”

“First answer me why you come into my house without knocking.”

“I will call Mauricio!”

“Call him. I will listen too.”

She dialed the number. I closed the laptop and placed the phone on the table. A few seconds later, a call came in.

“Mother, what is happening?” Mauricio’s irritated voice sounded.

Graciela told him everything as if I had burst into the house and smashed the furniture.

“Nino, get out of there right now!” he shouted.

“When your mother leaves my house, I will leave hers too.”

“It is not the same thing!”

“Then explain the difference to me.”

The line went dead.

Graciela dropped the phone onto the table.

“You are destroying our family.”

“No. I am only opening the door that you left open for me a long time ago.”

Then Mauricio’s phone lit up again. This time the message remained on the screen.

“Wednesday, as always. When your wife leaves, I will wait for you in your bed.”

Graciela saw it.

Her face went pale in one second.

“Who is this?” I asked.

She could not answer me. She lunged for the phone, but I was faster.

That day I understood for the first time that Mauricio’s mother’s intrusions might not have been only violations of boundaries. And Wednesday was tomorrow…

I left Graciela’s house and returned directly to our apartment. It was Wednesday. Five in the evening. I stood in front of the door, turning in my hand the small elephant-shaped keychain that Mauricio had given me after the wedding. Until then it had been a sign of love to me. At that moment it seemed like a heavy, cold object.

Mauricio returned home at seven. As soon as he opened the door, I saw his face and understood that Graciela had already called him.

“Why did you go to my parents’ house?”

“For the same reason your mother comes here.”

“You are behaving sickly.”

“Today I saw your phone.”

He stopped.

“Were you rummaging through my phone?”

“A message appeared on the screen. I only read it.”

“It means nothing.”

“Then tell me who the woman is who is waiting for you in my bed on Wednesday.”

His face changed. For the first time I saw his confidence collapse.

“Nino, calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down. Tell me the truth.”

He snatched the phone from me, but I had already saved the message on my computer. I opened the screen in front of him.

“It was only a joke,” he said.

“You joked every Wednesday for four months?”

Silence fell.

Then someone knocked at the door. Graciela and Don Roberto entered. Graciela held a small leather bag, and her fingers were trembling so much that she could not open the clasp several times.

“Tell her, Mauricio,” she said. “Tell her that I started everything.”

“Mother, be quiet.”

“No! It is enough already.”

From the bag she took several printed sheets and placed them on the table. They contained correspondence between Mauricio and his co-worker, Elena. The dates matched: my “business days,” his “business trips,” and those Wednesdays when he met someone else in my bed.

“Elena’s husband found out, and her lawyer obtained this correspondence,” Graciela said. “I knew, but I thought that if I stopped you from interfering in the family, everything would calm down.”

Mauricio looked at the papers.

“They were obtained illegally.”

“Maybe,” I answered. “But the messages saved on my computer and the bank transfers are not illegal.”

He raised his head.

“What transfers?”

“The money you sent to Elena from our joint account. I already have the bank statement too.”

Don Roberto lowered his eyes. Graciela sank into the armchair.

Mauricio took one step toward me.

“You cannot use this like that.”

“I am not using anything. I am simply no longer hiding what you were doing.”

That night he called not me for the first time, but his lawyer. After ending the conversation, he smiled strangely.

“You still do not understand whom you are fighting.”

But then a new call came to his phone. Elena’s name was flashing on the screen. Mauricio answered.

A few seconds later, his voice sounded in the room because the call had accidentally switched to speaker mode.

“If Nino publishes everything, I will also say why I was meeting you in your office. The police have already started talking about your clients’ money.”

Mauricio let the phone fall from his hand.

And I realized that the betrayal had not begun only in my bed. And the worst news for him was still ahead, because the next morning other people would already be knocking on his office door…
