Part 4 — I was saying goodbye to my husband at the airport when I read one message on his phone and the bank employee’s face changed

Lucia called the police at that very moment, but Sergio acted faster.

At ten at night my phone was growing hot from calls. The bank, the company’s managers, two journalists, and three unknown numbers took turns calling.

Sergio sent me twenty-one messages.

“Everything can still be fixed.”

“Do not force me to act against you.”

“The estate belongs to both of us.”

I stared at the last sentence for a long time.

The estate had never been his.

At eleven at night Lucia called me.

“Sergio’s lawyer refused to defend him.”

“Why?”

“He received a copy of the recording from the auditor. He said that he could not risk his own license in this matter.”

For the first time that night I sat down. My mother’s copper key lay on the kitchen table. The blue enamel tip glimmered in the light of the rain.

At six in the morning the police began searching Sergio’s apartment.

I did not go there.

Lucia told me that copies of my identity documents, old extracts of my mother’s estate, and correspondence with Claudia had been found in his phone. And Claudia had not gone directly to London from the airport. She was hiding in Valencia, in one of the small hotels.

Sergio tried to regain control.

He told the employees that I had had a nervous breakdown and could no longer manage the company.

One of the managers believed him.

But another forwarded the letter I had sent to my auditor to the prosecutor’s office.

It was there that I realized that the truth works only when you no longer hide it.

At noon Sergio was brought to the preliminary hearing room of the court. I stood by the wall. He stood several meters away from me, his face had gone white, but he was still trying to maintain his old expression.

“Elena, don’t do this here,” he said to me quietly.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Meine Schwester verlangte vor meiner Tür das Haus am See, doch als ihr Mann mich verspottete, verschwand sein Lächeln

“I did nothing.”

“You can stop everything.”

“No, Sergio. You can tell the truth.”

The judge listened to the audio recording.

When he heard his own voice, Sergio raised his head. For the first time he saw how his words sounded in someone else’s ear.

“Elena knows nothing. Her signature resembles the real one enough.”

Silence fell in the courtroom.

Sergio moved his lips, but no voice came out anymore.

The judge ordered the freezing of his bank accounts, the confiscation of his passport, and his detention until the investigation was completed. Claudia was also arrested in a hotel in Valencia. The four million had not yet been transferred: the bank stopped the money in time.

Eight million four hundred thirty thousand euros were saved.

But that same day I realized that saving only the money was not enough for me.

That same evening I packed Sergio’s things at home. The wardrobe remained almost empty. Above the bed hung a photograph of our wedding, but that photograph could no longer show us what we had once believed.

The only thing I did not throw away was the small wheel from his red suitcase. At the airport it had belonged to Claudia’s suitcase, but later I learned that Sergio had torn his own address from the luggage tag bought for me and attached it to Claudia’s bag. This small black wheel remained with me by accident, when the bag was opened at the office.

That night I entered the empty room and placed the wheel on the windowsill.

It was quiet.

Very quiet.

Three weeks later I reopened the company. I gave the employees new powers, introduced double confirmation for the accounts, and a young financier, Mara, took Claudia’s place.

And I visited the estate for the first time in a long while.

On the coast of Javea the wind shook the windows. My mother’s house was empty, but it did not frighten me. The old clock in the living room was working and every hour reminded me with one clear strike that time was still moving.

!!!  Mein Bruder sperrte mich nach dem Tod unseres Vaters aus dem Familienhotel, doch als ich eine verbotene Seite öffnete, wurde er kreidebleich

Five months later my nephew, Niko, was waiting for me there. He was ten years old and was drawing at the wooden table.

“Whose house is this?” he asked me.

“Our family’s.”

“Now no one will take it away from you anymore?”

I could not answer his question immediately. Then I sat down beside him.

“If we take care of the truth, no one can take away from us what was ours.”

Niko drew the house, added the sea in front of it, and drew a small key on the door.

“This protects you,” he told me.

I smiled.

“No. It reminds me that I must lock my own door myself.”

The new life did not begin with noise.

In the mornings I walked to the office. Twice a week I walked along the coast. I hung my mother’s photograph on the wall and made a small shelf beneath it.

I put the copper key there.

Six months later I received a letter from Sergio. It had been sent from prison. I recognized the handwriting, but I did not open the envelope.

Lucia told me that in the letter he asked for forgiveness and said that Claudia had forced him.

“Do you want me to read it?” she asked me.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

I tore the letter and put it in the trash bin.

That same evening Sergio’s mother called me.

“He was still your husband,” she told me. “A person has the right to make a mistake.”

I was watching the sunset from the window.

“Whether it was a mistake or not, that is no longer for me to decide,” I answered. “I can no longer protect him from its consequences.”

In the first week of autumn thin snow came to Javea. Niko made a small snowman in the yard. He could not find a carrot for a nose and instead stuck in a small piece of wood.

!!!  Am ajuns la recitalul fiicei mele și am găsit numele ei șters de pe afiș, iar directoarea a început să tremure

I came out of the house, wrapped a warm shawl around my shoulders, and stood beside him.

The small black wheel was no longer on the windowsill. I had stored it in the basement because I no longer wanted to see the remnant of the old path every morning.

But the copper key was still in its place.

The blue enamel tip shone in the weak ray of the sun.

I took it in my hand, locked the door of the house, and for the first time did not wait for anyone.

My life remained behind that door.

And I moved forward.

Missed the beginning?
