I was saying goodbye to my husband at the airport when I read one message on his phone and the bank employee’s face changed

At the fourth terminal of Madrid Barajas, my husband was hugging me, while I already knew that his lover was also flying on his plane. Sergio Llorente thought that I was crying. In reality, my eyes were lowered only so that he would not see how dry my face was.

“I did everything for us,” he whispered to me and moved a curl away from my hair. “Eighteen months will pass quickly.”

An expensive watch coldly gleamed on his fingers. For three months he had been repeating the same thing: a German consulting company needed a head of European expansion in Hamburg, and the contract would change our lives. I listened, nodded, and pretended as though I believed him. A week ago I had even bought a new leather cover for his passport.

I discovered the truth four nights ago, when Sergio left a tablet switched on the kitchen counter. The first message was from Claudia Mena, our company’s external financial director.

“We will be apart before boarding. We will no longer need to hide in London.”

The next message was shorter.

“Let her cry. When she comes to her senses, it will already be too late.”

Sergio was sleeping peacefully in the bedroom. And I was reading all his lies in the yellow light of the kitchen. I found tickets booked for two people, transfers divided among unknown companies, and letters in which Claudia mentioned “closing the loophole before leaving Spain.”

I did not understand everything, but I clearly saw one number: eight million four hundred thirty thousand euros. It was the company’s free funds, deposits, and one large deal whose disruption Sergio’s powers could make possible.

That night I did not wake him. In the morning I called Lucia Ferran, my father’s old lawyer, and then a financial investigator. Within seventy-two hours I collected powers of attorney, access credentials, bank movements, and copies of correspondence. In my bag I had one thing that I had kept since childhood: my mother’s small copper key, with a tip of blue enamel. It belonged to the Cape Djave estate, and before her death my mother told me never to hand it over to anyone.

At the airport Sergio was again playing the role of a concerned husband.

“You will call me as soon as you arrive?”

“As soon as I land,” he answered me.

!!!  El millonario me retó a bailar para humillarme, pero cuando di el primer paso su sonrisa desapareció

His phone flashed. He immediately turned the screen away, but it was too late. Claudia was standing a hundred meters away, wearing dark glasses, with a red suitcase, and looking at the shop window as if she were seeing it for the first time.

Sergio kissed me on the forehead and went toward security. I waited until he disappeared into the crowd. Then I straightened my shoulders.

At ten twenty I got into a taxi. At eleven I entered the bank on Castellana Avenue. At eleven seven I canceled all of Sergio’s powers, requested an examination of the suspicious transfers, and stopped the credit withdrawal scheduled for that same day.

At twelve forty-one I received the first message.

“What did you do to the company card?”

I did not answer.

The second message was followed by a call. Sergio did not even ask about the card.

“Elena, the signing concerning your mother’s estate must be completed today,” he told me. “You prepared the documents already, didn’t you?”

I closed my fingers around the copper key in my frozen hands.

“Which documents are you talking about?”

Silence fell. And at that moment I realized that Claudia might be my smallest problem. Lucia raised her hand behind the bank’s glass door and showed me a heavy folder. Then she pulled the lock and reached out to take out the first sheet…

She opened the folder in a small room of the bank. The air conditioner hummed as if someone were breathing inside the walls.

“These documents bear your signature,” Lucia told me. “But you did not certify them.”

The address of my mother’s estate was written on the sheet. Below it was my surname, and beside it was a notary’s seal.

“This is forged,” I said.

“Then we must find who used a copy of your identity document.”

At that very moment Sergio called again.

“If you do not mortgage the estate today, everything will collapse,” he shouted. “You will lose the company too!”

“Who told you there was something to mortgage?”

“Don’t play games with me, Elena. Claudia has already signed.”

Lucia looked into my eyes. Claudia’s name in this matter was no longer only part of the betrayal.

The auditor Tomas opened the computer and showed the chain of transfers. The money went from the company’s accounts to three small companies, and then gathered in one account. The owner of the account seemed to be a foreign man, but the address matched Sergio’s old apartment.

!!!  Mi esposo quemó mi título frente a toda su familia, pero cuando levanté el teléfono su sonrisa desapareció

“This is not yet the complete picture,” Tomas said. “The main evidence is with the person who recorded Sergio’s last meeting.”

Lucia picked up the phone.

“I will call him.”

“Who is it?”

She paused and answered me:

“Your husband’s notary. And he wants to meet you tonight…”

The notary Alvaro Navarro met us at eight in the evening in an old hotel. Rain was beating against the windows, while his hands on the table were trembling so much that the coffee spoon was hitting the cup.

“I thought this was an ordinary transaction,” he said. “Sergio told me that you agreed to everything.”

“My signature is forged,” I said. “And now tell me what you saw.”

Alvaro opened a leather bag and placed a small recorder on the table.

“I made this recording yesterday, when he made me sign the documents. I became suspicious when I saw the ownership extract of your mother’s estate. It says there that the land has already been transferred as security for a loan.”

“By whom?”

Alvaro switched on the recorder.

Sergio’s voice sounded in the room, exactly as calm as it was at home.

“Elena knows nothing. Her signature resembles the real one enough. First we will transfer the estate, and then the company’s shares. When she realizes it, the eight million will already be in London.”

Claudia chuckled in the recording.

“And if she resists us?”

“She is afraid of losing her mother’s estate. We will pressure her in the right place.”

The words fell on the table like blows. I could not breathe. Four years ago, after my mother’s funeral, it was Sergio who held my hand and promised me that no one would touch this land.

Lucia stopped the recorder.

“This is a complete confession. Forged documents, a plan to transfer the money, and intent.”

!!!  No one could withstand the wounded Dominik Rossi, but when he heard my refusal, his face suddenly turned pale

Alvaro lowered his head.

“I will go to the police. But you must know one thing: Sergio already tried to register the estate this morning.”

“And what happened?”

“The registration was stopped. However, he left another route as well.”

He took out a second sheet. It said that if the transaction failed, all responsibility would pass to me as the company’s sole manager.

At that very moment my phone rang. The number was unknown.

“Mrs. Sanci,” said a man’s cold voice, “if you do not pay four million by nine o’clock tomorrow morning, all the documents concerning your estate will be published in the press.”

“Who are you?”

“The person to whom your husband gave the key to your house.”

The call ended. I looked at the copper key lying on the table and for the first time felt that the danger was already standing at our door.

Lucia closed the folder.

“Elena, by tomorrow morning we must find out to whom Sergio gave this key. Otherwise this will no longer be only about stealing money…”
