Part 4 — They Brought Me to the ER Unnamed, but My Ex Saw Me in the Operating Room and His Hands Trembled for the First Time

Ethan ran into the corridor before the ink on the document had dried.

“Lock down the children’s department!” he shouted.

Security blocked his way, but he no longer tried to use the family name. Instead, he took his phone from his pocket and called the police.

“I am Doctor Ethan Caldwell. They are trying to remove two newborns from the hospital using a false guardianship document. Send a patrol immediately.”

Lucas was standing behind him.

“Think about what you are doing. Mother can erase all of this.”

“That is exactly why I am doing this now.”

“She will make us lose our family.”

Ethan turned toward him.

“No. Mother made us lose all of this. We simply watched for too long.”

Lucas called Victoria. The call was answered immediately. Ethan turned on the speaker.

“Do not touch the children,” Victoria said. “Hanna will not be able to raise them. She is poor, sick, and had a life hidden from you.”

“You knew they were my children?”

Silence fell on the other side of the line.

“Five years ago I knew she was pregnant. Then she disappeared. What difference does it make?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Now repeat your own words.”

“I said that I was cleaning your life. She was not good enough for you.”

Everyone in the corridor heard it.

Margaret saved the audio recording. The police took possession of the phone and the document.

Victoria’s voice suddenly changed.

“Ethan, this is a family matter.”

“No,” he answered. “This is a crime.”

In the morning, a temporary judge came to the hospital. The children were still in incubators, while I could not even get up from the bed. The lawyer who had served Victoria’s family for years reviewed the documents and shook his head.

“I can no longer represent you, Mrs. Caldwell.”

“You are losing my money.”

“No. I am saving my name.”

!!!  Volví antes de mi misión y encontré a mi hija enferma y sola, pero al mencionar las cámaras mi marido dejó de sonreír

Victoria fell silent for the first time then.

The judge left temporary custody of the children with me and gave Ethan only medical rights until they completed the full investigation. Victoria was forbidden to leave the hospital.

And I was still somewhere between sleeping and waking when Ethan sat beside my bed.

“Hanna, I know you may not want to see me.”

“Do you really know?”

“No. But I am ready to listen.”

His voice no longer sounded like the man who had turned his back on me in the rain five years ago.

“You believed me when it was already too late,” I told him.

“I know.”

“No, you do not know. I worked alone, went to doctors alone, bought baby clothes alone. And you thought that I had sold your family.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“You are right.”

Those two words turned out to be heavier than any explanation.

Several weeks later, I managed for the first time to take the children in my arms. I named the girl Lea, and the boy Noah. Their tiny fingers curled around my skin.

Ethan stood at the door of the room.

“May I come in?”

“If you are coming for the children, yes.”

“What if I want to come for you too?”

I looked at him for a long time. That old silver watch was still on his wrist.

“Then first you have to learn to knock on the door.”

He nodded.

“I will learn.”

The investigation confirmed that Victoria had covered up the sale of the research, threatened Margaret, and shown Ethan forged letters against me. Lucas gave testimony. Victoria lost the hospital board, part of her property, and finally her freedom as well.

I did not attend her punishment.

That day I moved with the children into a small rented house, from whose kitchen window the train line could be seen. I no longer needed to work at the warehouse. Margaret offered me an administrative position at the research center because she knew how well I noticed what others hid.

Three months later, Lea smiled for the first time. Noah, meanwhile, drew two circles on the wall with a pencil and drew a big red line between them.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Us,” he told me.

“Where am I?”

He added a third, larger circle for me.

Ethan came twice a week. He bathed the children, prepared their medicines, and no longer asked for my trust. He was simply there.

One evening he brought me a small box.

“Victoria sent it.”

Inside the box was her old letter. Only one sentence was written: “You can come back if we forget everything.”

I folded the paper and handed it back.

“Tell her that I no longer live in a house where the truth requires hiding.”

Ethan said nothing.

I went to the window. Outside, the first snow was falling. Lea was wearing my red knitted bracelet on her wrist, and the two knots had already loosened slightly. Noah was sitting at my feet and tying his little toy train with the same thread.

I carefully straightened the bracelet.

Two knots.

Two lives.

And for the first time in five years, the past did not open the door for me anymore.

Missed the beginning?
