My husband gave my seat on the plane to his secretary, but when I calmly got off, his smile disappeared

I was standing in the airplane doorway when my husband told me in front of everyone that I no longer had a seat beside him. For four years I had sat in exactly that seat, but that morning Chloe, his new secretary, had settled there.

She was sitting so close to Carter, as if even the air separating their bodies were unnecessary. She was turning a peeled orange in her hand and bringing each segment to his lips.

Chloe saw me and deliberately let one segment fall from her hand. The orange fell onto Carter’s knees.

“Oh, Mr. Sterling, forgive me,” she whispered, and immediately began wiping the juice from his clothes.

Carter did not even look toward me.

“Why are you standing in the doorway? Chloe is afraid of flying. Tell her to sit in your seat and move to the fifth row now.”

The conversation in the cabin stopped. All the company executives were there. Their eyes converged on me, as if I were an awkward object someone had left in the way.

Then Carter’s mother, Vera, walked between the seats. A heavy gold bracelet jingled on her wrist.

“Samantha, do not make a scene,” she said. “The poor girl helped Carter until three in the morning. Show at least a little understanding.”

I felt cold in my chest, but kept a smile on my face.

No one knew that four years earlier Carter’s enterprise had been drowning in debt. It was then that I transferred one and a half billion dollars from my family trust fund. I had also obtained, financed, and temporarily transferred to him for use the thirteen foundational patents on which his entire technological empire stood.

Carter believed this was not love, but his own merit.

“Carter,” I said calmly, “do you really want me to leave?”

He sighed irritably.

“Do not force me to distinguish my wife from my employees. Know your place.”

My fingers found a small silver compass in my bag. Father had given it to me on my seventeenth birthday and told me: “If you lose your way, do not trust the noise. The needle always shows you the truth.”

That morning I understood for the first time that I had not lost my way—I had simply been following someone else’s direction for too long.

“I know exactly where my place is,” I answered and closed the compass in my palm. “And I am not going to argue over this seat.”

I took hold of my bag and walked toward the door.

“Are you really leaving?” Chloe asked mockingly.

I did not look back.

The chief of the crew, Dato, was already waiting for me at the airport’s private exit. As soon as he saw me, he immediately nodded.

“Madam, we are waiting for an order. Shall we cancel the flight?”

His voice made everything audible to those standing behind my back. Carter appeared at the door.

“What order?” he asked.

I looked at the silver compass. The needle was pointing north, and my finger stopped on the phone screen.

“Cancel the flight,” I said. “And inform all passengers that the company’s future meeting will be held at another address.”

Fear appeared on Carter’s face for the first time.

“Samantha, what are you doing?”

A notification arrived on the phone. A security code was requested. I knew the code. I moved my finger toward the screen, and at that exact moment Carter rushed toward me……

Carter’s hand closed around my wrist, but Dato immediately stepped between us.

“Let go of her, Mr. Sterling.”

“She is my wife!” Carter shouted.

“And the airplane belongs to her family,” Dato answered calmly.

An awkward silence descended in the cabin. The color disappeared from Chloe’s face.

I entered the code on the phone. A few seconds later, a message appeared on the screen: “Flight canceled. Extraordinary board meeting confirmed.”

“This is impossible,” Vera whispered.

“You always said that I did nothing,” I told her. “So today I will do only what you have never asked me about.”

Carter came closer to me.

“If you leave now, you will lose everything. I will freeze your accounts.”

I smiled bitterly.

“My accounts?”

At that moment, the lawyer Nino called me.

“Samantha, the document is ready,” she said. “But you should know that Carter used one more signature last night.”

My heart clenched.

“Whose?”

Nino was silent for several seconds.

“Yours. But you did not put this signature there……”

After Nino’s last words, such silence fell in the small airport waiting room that everyone could hear the ticking of the wall clock. Carter stood by the window, nervously intertwining his fingers. Chloe, meanwhile, was clinging to the edge of the seat.

“What do you mean, the signature is forged?” I asked.

Nino placed a dark green folder on the table. My family’s coat of arms was embossed on its surface.

“We have three documents,” she said. “The first confirms that the thirteen main patents were never Carter’s property. They remained in your fund and were transferred to the company only under a license.”

Carter laughed loudly.

“This is nonsense. Samantha transferred everything to me.”

“No,” I answered. “I gave you a chance. I never transferred ownership.”

Nino turned over the second sheet.

“The second document proves that the controlling stake in the company also belongs to you, Samantha. Carter was the executive director, but the right to make the final decision remained with you.”

Vera struck the table with her hand.

“He deceived us all these years?”

“I deceived no one!” Carter shouted. “Samantha knew that I was signing.”

“Some documents,” Nino said, “but not the power of attorney from yesterday with which Carter transferred part of the company’s shares to a foreign fund. Your name was used there.”

She took a small memory device from the folder and connected it to Dato’s laptop. Carter’s voice sounded in the room.

“If Samantha does not sign, we will do it in her name. She has been silent for four years; what will one more signature change?”

My stomach tightened. For the first time I heard my own husband’s voice as if it were coming from a strange man.

Chloe covered her lips with her hand.

“Where did you get this recording?” she asked.

“From the company’s security system,” Nino answered. “Carter could not delete it, because the server is in Samantha’s fund.”

Carter came toward me.

“Samantha, listen to me. This is only business. I am your husband.”

“That is exactly why it hurts,” I said. “If a stranger had done it, I would only be angry. But you—I called everything by the name of love when in reality it was called your fear.”

Nino took out the last sheet.

“And now the hardest part. The examination of this signature showed that it was made with the pen found in Carter’s personal safe.”

Carter stepped back. His face became gray.

The phone rang. It was an unknown number.

Nino answered, listened for several seconds, and then looked at me.

“Samantha, the police are already on their way. But this call was not from them. The bank informed us that Carter tried to empty another account this morning.”

Carter took the phone from his pocket. He looked at the screen and lost control for the first time.

“No,” he rasped. “He should not have found this account.”

“Which account are you talking about?” I asked.

He did not answer me. He only looked at the silver compass in my hand, as if the answer were hidden in that small object.

At that moment Nino’s phone rang again. She looked at the screen and caught her breath.

“Samantha, your daughter’s school is calling. They say Carter’s mother has arrived there and is trying to take Elena……”
