As soon as my father was brought out of the operating room, my stepmother threw me to the floor and ordered the nurses not to help me.
My shoulder scraped against the cold tile and the pain caught my breath. The white walls floated before my eyes, while the intermittent beeping of the monitors sounded as if the whole hospital were counting down seconds against me.
“No one interfere,” Victoria’s voice rang out.
I looked at the nearest nurse.
“Please… my father has just come out of surgery.”
The woman pressed her lips together and lowered her eyes to the floor. A plastic bracelet was biting into the skin of her wrist. She was frightened too.
Victoria seized me by the arm and dragged me down the corridor.
“Let go!” I shouted. “What have I done to you?”
“You ask too many questions, Emma.”
“I was asking about my father. About his treatment.”
“No. You were asking about the hospital.”
She glanced toward my father’s room, as if the sleeping man beyond the door belonged to her.
“You don’t know how quickly everything can change.”
“What do you mean?”
Victoria bent down. Her strong perfume covered the smell of blood and disinfectant.
“Your father owns the controlling stake in the hospital. For two years he has been quietly buying shares. Tomorrow morning this institution will finally belong to our family.”
“And why should that matter to me?”
Her smile slowly disappeared.
“Because yesterday he changed his will.”
My heart clenched.
“What did he change?”
“He left control to you.”
For several seconds I heard only the machine’s beeping. I could not believe it. My father had always told me that property meant nothing if you lost your family because of it. Now I understood that Victoria did not want to get rid of me out of hatred.
She was afraid of my inheritance.
“You’re lying.”
Victoria took a document from her handbag and dropped it in front of me. The corner of the paper was slightly wet, as if someone had held it in their hand for a long time from nervousness.
“Temporary power of attorney. With your father’s signature.”
His name was written on the document. Beside it was Victoria’s.
“This signature is forged.”
“Be careful.”
She seized me by the chin.
“Father will wake tomorrow. And when he wakes, he will think you abandoned him.”
“You can’t do this.”
“I already did. This morning I fired two nurses because they tried to resist me. Everyone here understood who holds the power.”
Then she pushed me toward the door.
My father lay motionless behind the glass. His face was pale, and on his right hand was a small metal bracelet—the one he had made for me in childhood from the mechanism of an old watch.
“Dad…” I pressed my hand to the glass.
Victoria entered the room. My father opened his eyes and looked directly at me. Without words I told him: I love you.
Victoria stepped between us.
My father’s lips moved.
“Emma… why are you here?”
“I never left, Dad!”
“She was asked to leave,” Victoria immediately intervened.
The monitor’s sound accelerated. Doctors rushed into the room and brought both of us outside.
I collapsed against the wall. Just then that frightened nurse approached me and took a tiny brass key from her pocket.
“Your father gave me this yesterday,” she said quietly. “He executed the new will before my eyes.”
“Where is it?”
“I don’t know. But he told me not to give it to Victoria.”
I clenched the key in my hand. It was cold.
“What else did he tell you?”
The nurse looked toward the end of the corridor.
“That if someone changed his records, I should have you look for room seven hundred fourteen.”
At that moment my phone vibrated. Only one message came from an unknown number: “Your father’s records are not the only thing they changed.”
A second message followed immediately: “Room 714. Now.”
Victoria looked toward the end of the corridor. Then she ran. I seized the nurse’s hand and ran toward the locked archive. I slid the key into the lock, the door opened, and the smell of paper, dust, and old medicines came from the darkness. I saw my father’s file on a shelf. I reached toward it, but at that same moment Victoria’s footsteps sounded beyond the door and the nurse grabbed my arm…
I pressed the file to my chest. The door handle slowly went down.
“Turn off the light,” I whispered.
The nurse covered the switch with her hand. Darkness covered the room; only the faint corridor light reached the floor.
Victoria entered.
“Emma, I know you’re here.”
There was no longer calm in her voice.
I slipped between the shelves. Dust choked my throat, while my hand held the hard edge of the file.
“Lock the door and I’ll call security,” the nurse told her.
“You already called them?” Victoria asked coldly. “Then you will lose your job first.”
The nurse did not answer.
Victoria turned on her phone. The light passed over our heads, but she did not see us. When she reached the second shelf, an alarm sounded in the distance. Victoria turned and ran outside.
The nurse and I came out immediately.
I opened the file. Inside were surgery records, property lists, and the names of patients who had died under suspicious circumstances. They all had one thing in common—significant property.
On the last page was Victoria’s name, and beside it two words: “Acquisition completed.”
The nurse opened another file and went pale.
“Emma… this is your name.”
The record had been prepared six months before I first entered this hospital. The treatment plan said: “Surveillance. Isolation. Removal.”
We heard footsteps from behind.
Victoria stood in the doorway. She held a syringe.
“You came too far in my hospital,” she said.
And she slowly raised the syringe…
White liquid glimmered on the syringe’s tip. My knees gave way, but this time I could no longer retreat.
“What is that?” I asked.
“A sedative. You are very agitated.”
“Or poison,” the nurse said.
Victoria’s face changed.
At that moment heavy footsteps and the voices of security officers sounded outside the archive. Victoria stepped back, but the door was already locked. The nurse had slid the bolt across beforehand.
“Give me the records,” Victoria said. “All of this is forged.”
“Then why was my file created six months before the operation?” I asked.
She answered only when my father’s chief doctor, Levan, appeared in the doorway. Beside him stood the hospital lawyer and two police officers.
“Because you were part of his plan too,” Victoria told me.
“Whose?”
“Your father’s.”
Silence fell.
Levan placed a small recorder on the table and pressed the button. My father’s hoarse but clear voice sounded in the room.
“If you are hearing this, I may not have come out of the operation. Victoria has been changing my medical records for two years. She convinced me that my memory was deteriorating so that I would transfer the power of attorney to her. But I recorded everything.”
Victoria shook her head.
“That is not his voice.”
Levan took out a second sheet.
“This is the new will executed yesterday. The nurse and I are witnesses. Your father left you the controlling stake, Emma. Victoria receives only the house and personal savings.”
The syringe fell from Victoria’s hand and broke on the floor.
“No… he couldn’t have done this.”
“He did,” I said. “And he knew you were planning to get rid of me.”
The nurse raised my file.
“It says here that the patients died after their property was transferred. This is no longer only a family dispute.”
The policeman put handcuffs on Victoria. She first tried to resist, then suddenly lunged toward me.
“If I go down, you won’t survive either!” she shouted.
“Why?”
Victoria smiled, but fear stood in her eyes.
“Because your father was not the only one involved in all this.”
Her phone lit up on the floor. A new message from an unknown number appeared on the screen: “The surgeon already knows who sent the records. If Emma takes over the hospital, her life will also be in danger.”
Levan read the message and his face changed.
“You have to see this,” he said.
“What?”
He held the phone out to me. The last line said: “The second person is inside the hospital. And he is heading toward your father’s room right now…”
