My mother-in-law twisted my arm and handed me divorce papers, but when she heard my refusal, the color drained from her face

My mother-in-law pressed me against the marble kitchen counter and twisted my arm behind my back so hard that I could no longer feel blood moving in my fingers.

My shoulder was on fire. In front of me lay divorce papers, as if my marriage were an ordinary account that I would sign and be done with.

Eleanor stood behind me and breathed calmly. Her fingers smelled of lemon—she had made tea a few minutes earlier, and now she was hurting my bones.

“Sign,” she told me.

I could barely turn my head.

“Are you crazy?”

Her hand squeezed my wrist harder.

“I told you, sign.”

“Why should I sign a document that you prepared for my husband without him?”

Eleanor smiled at me. It was the smile she wore at family dinners when she convinced everyone that I was overly sensitive.

“Because when Nathan arrives, you will no longer have a marriage to save.”

My heart contracted.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing yet.”

She picked up one of the sheets and placed a photograph on it.

In the photograph I was standing in front of a hotel beside my financial adviser, David Harris. That day David was supposed to show me the strange transfers in the company accounts. In the photograph, however, it looked as if we were leaving a secret meeting.

“That is you,” Eleanor said.

“You know this means nothing.”

“I do not care what it means. I care what it will make Nathan believe.”

The small silver medallion hanging around my neck scratched my skin. My mother had given it to me on the morning of the wedding. Inside was a small, broken enamel bird—in her words, flight begins when the door closes.

“Someone was following me,” I whispered.

“Of course someone was following you.”

“Who?”

“You will explain that to Nathan.”

She extended the pen toward me.

“Your husband believes his mother. You are simply a woman he brought in.”

“I am his wife.”

“And I am his mother.”

The words hurt me more than her fingers.

I did not sign.

Eleanor’s face changed immediately. She grabbed my wrist again and twisted my arm so that my knees buckled.

“I will not do this,” I said through my teeth.

“Then you will regret being stubborn.”

My hip struck the edge of the marble. I screamed from the pain.

Something breaking sounded upstairs.

Eleanor released me.

We both looked up at the ceiling.

Then she smiled.

“Excellent.”

First she struck her own wrist against the counter. Once. Twice. Then she scratched her cheek with her fingernails and fell to the floor.

“Help me!” she shouted.

“What are you doing?”

She looked at me with tearful eyes.

“Now watch.”

The house security guards ran in. Behind them stopped Nathan’s younger brother, Michael. A heavy ring of keys swung in his hand.

“What happened?” he asked.

Eleanor pointed at me.

“She attacked me.”

“What?”

“She forced me to sign for her. She threatened me.”

Michael looked at my reddened wrist, then at his mother’s bloodied skin.

“You have to leave the house, Emma.”

“You believe her?”

He did not answer me.

Eleanor began crying louder.

“She said she would destroy this family.”

At that moment I understood: the papers were not the trap. I was the trap. She needed witnesses, injuries, and a prepared lie before Nathan’s plane landed.

I slipped my right hand into my pocket. I still had my phone there. The red recording sign was blinking on the screen.

I looked at Michael.

“Do you want to know what really happened?”

“Turn it on,” he told me.

I moved my finger toward the screen, but at that same moment the phone rang. Nathan’s name appeared on the screen. Eleanor’s tears froze on her face, and Michael held his breath. The ringing sounded once more in the kitchen, and I pressed the answer button…

“Emma, where are you?” Nathan’s voice was tense.

“At home.”

“Are you alone?”

Eleanor took a step forward. I pressed the phone to my chest.

“No.”

Silence fell on the other side.

“Is my mother there?”

“Yes.”

“Do not let her go.”

“Why?”

“I just received a file. From my father’s old lawyer.”

“Your father died seven years ago.”

“I know. The letter was not sent today. It was arranged seven years ago.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

“What does it contain?” I asked.

“The original of my father’s will. And something else that Mother has hidden all this time.”},{

“Nathan, tell me.”

His voice broke.

“Control of the family trust fund belongs to you, Emma.”

Eleanor grabbed the pen.

“Hang up the phone!”

“No!” I stepped back.

“That is why the divorce agreement had to be signed,” Nathan said. “If you are no longer my wife, you lose control too.”

Eleanor looked at Michael.

“This is a lie.”

“Then why are the papers already signed?” I asked.

I looked at the pages lying on the table. My signature stood on the last sheet. The date, however, was tomorrow’s.

Nathan said quietly:

“There is another recording there. Mother is talking to someone about your disappearance.”

David’s voice came from the phone:

“Emma, forgive me.”

I recognized that voice. That man was on Eleanor’s side.

“The divorce was only cover,” he continued. “First we needed her signature.”

Eleanor lunged toward me, but I closed the medallion in my hand and stepped back. Nathan shouted:

“Do not sign anything! Open the file and read it aloud…”

At Nathan’s words, everyone in the room stopped moving at the same time.

I went to the counter. I had the medallion clenched in my fist, and its broken enamel bird pierced my palm.

“Do not touch it,” Eleanor told me.

“That is exactly what I am going to do.”

Nathan’s voice could be heard from the phone.

“Emma, the screen is on. Press the file.”

The file opened. On the very first page stood my father’s signature, and below it were the notary’s seal and a date—from seven years ago.

“Read it,” Nathan told me.

My voice was trembling.

“The right to manage the family trust fund is transferred to my daughter-in-law, Emma, for as long as she is Nathan’s wife. Nathan and Eleanor have no right to change this decision or dispose of the fund’s property.”

Michael put a hand on the chair. Its wooden leg scraped across the floor.

“Mother… is that really Father’s signature?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“During his illness he no longer understood what he was signing.”

Nathan’s voice hardened.

“The notary confirmed in writing that Father was of sound mind.”

“That changes nothing!” Eleanor shouted. “We managed the fund!”

“No,” I said. “You were stealing the money.”

David’s recording started automatically. His voice was calm and cold.

“Transfers from the accounts took place for five years. If Emma signs the transfer document, everything will look legal.”

Then Eleanor’s voice was heard:

“If she does not sign, I will tell Nathan that she betrayed him. If necessary, she will even disappear. The important thing is to get the signature.”

Michael looked at his mother.

“You wanted to kill her?”

“Do not change the words!” Eleanor shouted.

“The recording does not change the words,” Nathan said from the phone.

Eleanor came toward me, but a security guard blocked her way.

“Ma’am, stay where you are.”

In David’s second recording, his voice was heard once again:

“Emma will sign. First we will separate her from Nathan, then we will transfer the fund.”

I picked up the last sheet. My signature stood there, but there was a small tremor in the pen lines—one my signature had never had.

“This is forged,” I said.

“The court will prove it,” Nathan replied. “The lawyer is already coming to the police.”

Eleanor suddenly gave a little laugh.

“You cannot prove anything.”

At that moment a new message arrived on the phone. It was not from Nathan. It was from an unknown number.

Only one sentence appeared on the screen: “If we do not give up the fund tonight, Nathan will go to prison tomorrow.”

Nathan fell silent.

“Emma,” he said at last, “I did not send this message.”

A second message arrived immediately. A photograph was attached to it: Nathan was standing in an airport waiting area, and two armed men could be seen behind him.

For the first time Eleanor stopped shouting.

“Who are they?” I asked.

Nathan barely exhaled.

“People who received money after my father’s death. And now, apparently, it is my turn…”
