Part 4 — When a Burned Veteran Entered the Neonatal Unit, One Detail Leaning Over the Baby Silenced the Entire Room

Sarah’s last words were still hanging in the air when all the doors of the unit locked at the same time.

The monitors were still beeping thinly.

The baby Mia was breathing peacefully in the incubator. The letter “M,” sewn with green thread above her head, was almost no longer visible.

Arthur took out his phone.

“I am calling my lawyer.”

“I already called him,” I said. “Before Sarah came in.”

I did not recognize my own voice. Despite the fear, for the first time I no longer felt that I was standing alone.

The administrator checked the door.

“No one has the right to lock the unit.”

“Did you have the right to create false documents about the baby?” Arthur asked.

The man fell silent.

The sound of fast steps was heard in the corridor.

Dana Whitmore picked up her bag.

“I am leaving here.”

Sarah stood in front of her.

“This time you are going nowhere.”

“You are drug-addicted. No one will believe your word.”

Sarah’s face changed, but she did not step back.

“They may believe me or not. But your own voice exists.”

She played the recording again.

Everyone in the corridor heard Dana Whitmore’s calm, cold voice:

“If you want money, sign. If not, the baby will not survive the night.”

Dana became pale.

The administrator stepped back.

“This was recorded illegally.”

“But those are your words,” I said.

At that moment three people entered. Among them was Arthur’s lawyer, attorney Elena Morgan, who carried a small black bag.

“Mr. Vance, do not touch anyone anymore,” she said. “I will take care of the rest.”

Arthur nodded.

“Will they take the baby?”

“No. The court’s temporary order has already been obtained. Mia will remain here until the matter of her family is clarified.”

Sarah placed her hand against the wall.

“Dad, I thought you would lose me too.”

Arthur stood in front of her.

“I lost you once. I will not lose you a second time.”

Then he touched the incubator with both hands.

!!!  Três caminhões afundaram no meu pasto durante a chuva, mas quando a presidente da associação chegou, sua expressão mudou

At that same moment a new message arrived on the phone. It was from the director’s number.

“You cannot win. We have enough evidence against Sarah. If you protect the baby, we will also expose her past.”

Arthur read the text and was not angry for the first time.

“They think I am afraid of shame,” he said.

“Are you afraid?” I asked.

“No. I am afraid that my daughter will think again that she was left alone.”

Two hours later the police arrived.

Dana Whitmore tried to escape, but at the end of the corridor she tripped over my uncle’s old wooden cart and fell to the floor. They put handcuffs on her while her voice was still being heard from the phone.

The administrator stood against the wall and desperately called a lawyer.

“Protect me,” he was telling him. “I pay you for this.”

The lawyer’s answer rang out loudly because the phone was on.

“I do not defend falsified medical records. From this moment I am no longer your representative.”

The man fell silent.

For the first time he heard himself in someone else’s ear.

In the video, his voice could be heard when he told Dana in the corridor: “The old veteran will not get the baby back. People like him only need to be told once that nothing belongs to them anymore.”

He looked at the screen.

“I did not say it like that.”

Elena answered calmly:

“You said it. And that is your voice.”

The man lowered his head.

That night, when the noise in the unit stopped, Arthur stood by the window. Beside him only an empty chair remained.

Sarah’s small bag, which the police had taken from the folder, lay there too. Inside were one broken photograph and a small spool of green thread.

Arthur touched the thread.

“Did you make this?” I asked Sarah.

“Before I began to run away. Mother told me the baby should have the first letter of her name.”

Arthur took the photograph. In it, young Sarah had one hand on her stomach and was still smiling.

!!!  4. RÉSZ — A férjem bejelentette, hogy anyjának adta a két év alatt gyűjtött pénzünket, én pedig csak annyit mondtam: „Értem” — majd elsápadt

“I never received this photograph,” he said.

“At least receive it now.”

He carefully put the photograph into his wallet.

That night Mia slept for the first time without the machine sounding an alarm.

Three weeks later the court recognized Sarah as the temporary caregiver and helped Arthur obtain legal guardianship of the child. The investigation established that Dana Whitmore and the director had forced vulnerable women to give up their children for three years. Mia’s case exposed everything.

Sarah began treatment.

Arthur went to therapy with her every morning.

One day little Mia was brought home for the first time.

The house stood in the outskirts of Omaha. Arthur arranged milk bottles on the windowsill, and pinned children’s drawings to the wall.

In the third month Mia was already laughing when Arthur’s fingers trembled. She placed her little hand on his wrist and seemed to tell him that now this trembling was no longer dangerous.

“Grandpa,” she said for the first time.

Arthur was standing in the kitchen and dropped the glass from his hand.

Sarah cried in the doorway.

Arthur wrapped his arms around the baby.

“I am here,” he told her.

Mia grew up.

And I went to their house twice a week. Sarah was already working part-time at a library. Arthur helped veterans who had lost sleep and peace.

Their house always had the same smell: warm milk, cinnamon, and Sarah’s freshly brewed coffee.

Six months later a letter came from the director.

He asked for help, forgiveness, and “starting everything over.” At the end he wrote that after getting out of prison he wanted to meet Arthur.

Arthur read the letter once.

Then he folded the envelope and put it in the trash.

“You will not answer?” I asked.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because his peace is no longer my duty.”

Sarah nodded.

Mia sat on the floor and drew with colored pencils. There were four figures on the sheet: a little girl, a young woman, a tall man, and a woman in a white coat.

!!!  Po otcově pohřbu mě nejbohatší muž z vesnice nutil prodat půdu, ale když jsem odmítl, jeho úsměv zmizel

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Our person,” Mia said.

I realized that she meant herself.

When winter came, the first snow arrived at night. In the morning Arthur opened the window and looked outside. The old military tag still hung from his neck.

Sarah’s name was written on it.

On the other side he had added a new small engraving: “Mia. Home.”

Sarah brought a small cap sewn with green thread from the room. The letter “M” was slightly crooked, but no one was trying to hide it anymore.

Arthur put the cap on Mia’s head.

His hands were still trembling slightly.

But this time the child was not frightened.

She grabbed Arthur’s fingers with both hands and told him:

“Grandpa, do not go away.”

Arthur took the metal tag lying on the window.

Outside, snow was quietly falling on the house where once no one was expected.

“Never again,” he answered.

And for the first time in a long while, the war could no longer find a place inside his body.

Missed the beginning?
