After the operation, I saw my husband’s wedding, but when I returned home, the trucks standing in the yard brought a smile to my face

Before the operation, when the doctor was telling me that after the rupture of the heart artery I had less than an hour left, the nurse looked at the phone and lost color in her face.

“Genevieve,” she told me, “your husband has held a wedding at the Veranda Hotel.”

At first I thought I had not understood. The monitor was beeping continuously, while in my chest there was such pain as if an iron hand were squeezing me from inside.

“What did you say?”

The nurse turned the phone toward me. A live broadcast was running on the screen. Julian Vance stood before hundreds of guests, and beside him was Victoria Hayes, the designer whom I personally had hired into our company three years earlier. Victoria was wearing an ivory wedding dress.

My husband was smiling.

My husband, who at those same moments was sending all the hospital calls to voicemail, was marrying for the second time.

“We must take her into surgery immediately,” the surgeon said. “Genevieve, if you hear me and agree to the risks, blink your eyes twice.”

I blinked twice.

The pen trembled in my hand so much that I could barely recognize the signature. The doctor took the sheet from me, while the nurse turned off the screen. The last thing I saw was Julian’s hand wrapped around Victoria’s waist.

Then everything turned black.

I came to several hours later. Thick bandages were on my chest, a tube hurt in my throat, and machines were measuring my breathing. The first word I said was phone.

“Do not hurry yet,” the nurse told me.

“Give me the phone.”

I called Julian three times. Each time I heard the same voice: the subscriber is unavailable. Then I contacted my assistant, Eleanor.

“Is the wedding over?”

There was a long silence on the other side.

“Yes.”

“Send me the recording.”

The video arrived in a few seconds. I watched as a journalist asked Julian about his first marriage. Julian kissed Victoria in front of the camera and calmly said:

“Some relationships continue only because of habit and responsibility. But today I am standing beside the woman with whom I have always wanted to build a future.”

Eleanor’s voice trembled on the phone.

“Genevieve, do you want me to call the police?”

“No.”

“Should I at least contact a lawyer?”

“Call Raymond. Right now.”

The next morning Eleanor brought me a thick folder. The smell of paper and the hospital disinfectant mixed together. Still under painkillers, I turned over the first page.

!!!  Când părinții mi-au refuzat un colț de garaj, am acceptat cheia mătușii, iar zece ani mai târziu fratele meu a amuțit

Three months earlier Julian had mortgaged the lakeside house left by my father as security for a ten-million-dollar loan. The money had then been transferred to an overseas account—an account opened in Victoria’s name.

My inheritance was financing that woman’s wedding.

“That is not all,” Eleanor told me quietly.

Several more accounts, real estate properties, and transfers appeared in the folder. Julian thought I would never check what he had been doing in my name for years.

I slowly closed the folder.

“Let Raymond assemble the entire legal team.”

“Genevieve, you have just undergone heart surgery.”

“That is exactly why we have no time.”

Eleanor looked at me worriedly.

“What else do you need?”

“Personal protection.”

“And?”

I tried to raise myself on the pillow. Pain blurred my eyes, but I did not change my voice.

“Eight large trucks.”

The corner of the folder bent in Eleanor’s hand.

“What are you planning?”

On the small table for my things beside the bed lay my father’s old brass key. The number of the lakeside house was engraved on it. I wrapped my fingers around the key and felt the firmness that Julian had considered a habit for years return inside me.

“When Julian returns from his honeymoon,” I told her, “he will find nothing in the house that belongs to him.”

That same evening Raymond’s assistant knocked on the door, holding another folder. He locked the door, drew the curtains, and sat down in front of me.

“This document is only for you,” he said.

His hand moved toward the folder’s clasp…

His fingers touched the clasp, but he had not opened it yet.

“What is inside?” I asked.

“Evidence that Julian knew you might not survive.”

My blood froze.

Eleanor pushed her chair back.

“That is impossible.”

“His signature is on the document,” Raymond’s assistant said. “And another transfer, one day before the operation.”

We opened the folder. Inside were a bank statement, a loan agreement, and printed pages of correspondence between Julian and Victoria. I looked several times at one sentence: “If she does not wake up, everything will remain with us.”

Cold poured into my stomach.

“Did he know that I was in the hospital?” I asked.

“He knew,” Eleanor answered. “And still he held the wedding.”

Raymond’s assistant took out another sheet.

“The trucks will come at eight in the morning. But Julian’s security employee has already called. He said that your husband is suddenly returning home.”

I went to the window. My chest hurt, but I was standing.

“Then let us begin today.”

At two o’clock at night Raymond called me.

“Genevieve, we discovered another account in your name. If you want to open it, you must see a recording that Julian himself left…”

After Raymond’s last words, such silence fell in the room that I could clearly hear even the clicking of the machine standing beside the bed.

“What recording?” I asked.

“An audio file. It was not discovered by accident. Julian left it in your personal safe because he thought you had lost the safe’s key.”

Raymond came to the hospital’s small conference room at seven in the morning. My father’s brass key lay on the table. Eleanor stood by the window holding a paper cup of coffee, while I sat on a chair and felt a stitch in my chest with every breath.

Raymond turned on the computer.

“Is listening necessary?” he asked.

“Yes.”

First, the sound of a door was heard in the recording. Then I recognized Julian’s voice.

“The operation is today,” he was saying. “If everything goes as the doctor said, we will no longer need her signature.”

Victoria quietly chuckled.

“And if she survives?”

“Then I will tell her that we prepared the extra charges and documents during her illness. She always trusted me.”

“The house?”

“The money is already ours. The bank belongs to my company, and the account is in your name. Genevieve will not find out until it is too late.”

The cup fell from Eleanor’s hand. Coffee spilled onto the floor.

The recording continued.

“Do not worry about the wedding,” Julian said. “If she dies, everyone will think I am simply a grieving husband. If she survives, she still will have no house, money, or strength to resist.”

The recording stopped.

For a long time no one could speak.

“Is this enough?” Eleanor barely uttered.

Raymond did not take his eyes from the screen.

“This is enough to freeze the loan, block the accounts, and begin a fraud case. But there is one more problem.”

“What problem?” I asked.

Raymond put a new sheet on the table.

“Julian signed a power of attorney in your name. Tomorrow morning he plans to sell the lakeside house. He has already paid the buyer an advance.”

!!!  Ich gab dem gefürchtetsten Mafioso Brooklyns meine letzten fünf Dollar, damit er meine Mutter rettete – dann öffnete sich die Wagentür

“But the house is my inheritance.”

“That is exactly why he is trying to sell it before the court has time to stop it.”

At that moment the phone rang. The number was unknown.

I answered.

“Mrs. Vance,” a man said, “I am the buyer of the house. Your husband tells me that you are in serious condition and soon will no longer be able to challenge the documents.”

“And why are you calling me?”

The man on the other side sighed.

“Because yesterday evening Julian sent me a draft of your death certificate.”

Eleanor covered her face with her hand.

Raymond stood up.

“Genevieve, now you must decide. Do you want to meet him yourself before we act?”

I looked at the city through the window. The first truck stopped in the hospital yard.

“Yes,” I said. “But not in the way he thinks.”

At that same moment a message arrived on Eleanor’s phone. She read it, then slowly looked at me.

“Julian has already returned home. And he is not alone. He is bringing a police officer and a new lawyer with him…”
