Part 4 — At night I fell in the mansion, and in the morning I was clutching the boss’s hand in his bed — but his gaze suddenly turned to ice

Before Leo finished speaking, Declan’s phone rang again.

This time the number was hidden.

“Don’t answer,” I told him.

Declan picked it up anyway.

“Who are you?”

A calm man’s voice sounded on the other side.

“If you want the girl alive, leave her bed within five minutes.”

Declan looked toward me.

“You are already late, Richard.”

“You have always been too self-confident.”

“All the hospital doors are locked.”

“Doors stop only those who do not have a key.”

The call ended.

Leo immediately ran into the corridor. Beyond the door, he loudly ordered the security guards to check every elevator.

I sat on the bed with my hand pressed to my chest. I still could not accept the fact that the woman I had called my sister all my life was from another family. But what hurt more was that Elena’s death might not have been an accident at all.

Declan knelt in front of me.

“Now you must believe everything I tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because it was my family that hid the truth from your sister.”

“You too?”

“I didn’t know.”

“But I was cleaning blood in your house.”

Something collapsed in his eyes.

“I know.”

“Could Elena have learned something about your family before her death?”

“Possibly.”

“And now you are afraid they will kill me too.”

“No,” he said. “I am afraid I will not reach you in time.”

That was the first honest thing I had heard from him.

In five minutes there was no gunfire in the hospital corridor, only the sharp alarm and the hurried footsteps of people. Leo returned with two guards.

“Richard could not get in,” he said. “But he called the police outside the hospital and told them that Declan had kidnapped a member of his own family.”

Declan smiled bitterly.

“He is trying to make it seem that he was attacked first.”

The door opened again.

The man who entered placed a black folder and a small voice recorder on the table.

“They found this in the warehouse wall,” he said. “It was hidden among Elena’s things.”

Declan pressed the recorder.

At first only static could be heard.

Then Elena’s voice.

“If someone is listening to this, it means I can no longer speak. Richard knows that Sophia is the true heir. He told me that if I made the recording public, he would kill Sophia too. Declan knows nothing. Do not trust those who say they protect the family. Sometimes family is exactly the place you need to escape from.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo exigió saber por qué faltaba el dinero, pero al ver lo que yo había preparado dejó de sonreír

The recording stopped.

I gripped the chair.

Declan hid his face in his hands.

For the first time I saw the strength he had carried for years fall onto his shoulders.

The police came that same day.

Richard came too, with lawyers. He struck the door hard with his hand.

“Declan, bring out the girl and we will settle the matter peacefully.”

Declan went into the corridor.

“You already settled it, Richard. Did you settle Elena’s brakes that way too?”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Be careful.”

“No. Now you be careful.”

Leo handed the recorder to the police. Then he opened the folder, which contained copies of transfers, clinic records, and the car repair bill.

Richard looked through everything.

“This is forged.”

“Then explain why the money transferred from your account matches the mechanic’s account,” Leo said.

Richard looked toward me.

“Girl, you know nothing about these people. Declan will not be able to protect you.”

“Did you know Elena?”

His face tightened for a moment.

“I knew everyone.”

“Then why did you kill her?”

Silence fell over the room.

Richard stepped back.

The policeman pulled his hands behind his back.

“Richard Walsh, you are under arrest on charges of organizing a murder, making threats, and financial fraud.”

Declan did not follow them. He stood at the end of the corridor and watched himself in the recording Leo had transferred to the phone.

Elena’s voice could still be heard.

“Sometimes family is exactly the place you need to escape from.”

Declan lowered his head.

“I did not understand this,” he said.

“You did not want to understand,” I answered. “Power sometimes takes away hearing too.”

Three days later, the Walsh house was emptied.

The security cars left. No shouting could be heard anymore in the meeting room. There were no bloodstains on the marble floor anymore, nor whiskey glasses waiting for anyone.

My small room on the lower floor was almost empty.

!!!  Part 4 — They were taking Grandma to a restaurant, but three hours later they left her at a nursing home — when I asked about it, my father stopped smiling for the first time.

Only one thing remained — a small copper bell hanging from the handle of the plastic basket, which Mrs. Gable had given me when I first came to work.

“If you need help, ring it,” she had told me then.

For two years I had never rung it.

Now I ran my finger over the bell and realized how many times I had learned to endure silently when I needed help.

Declan waited for me at the room’s door.

“I found you an apartment in the city.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“This money comes from your family.”

“Then transfer it into my own name.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“And one more thing.”

“Tell me.”

“I need all of Elena’s records and documents.”

“You will get them.”

“I don’t need you to protect me like a child.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you come?”

Declan took a small object from his pocket. It was Elena’s old keychain, with a half-faded silver letter hanging from it.

“They found this in her car.”

At the sight of it, such coldness poured into my heart as if I were standing in the hospital corridor again.

“Why are you giving it to me now?”

“Because before, I did not know who it belonged to.”

“Now you know?”

“Now I know that the truth belongs to you.”

It took months for Richard to reach trial. His lawyers tried to declare the recording suspicious, but the transfers, clinic records, and the mechanic’s confession fit together exactly.

I did not rejoice at a single hearing.

When Richard received his sentence, I simply lowered my eyes. No one could bring Elena back anyway.

Declan sold part of the Walsh business. With the remaining money he created a fund for the clinic, which helped people drowning in someone else’s medical debts.

One day I asked:

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because I owed your sister a debt.”

“You are not paying your sister, but your own conscience.”

He smiled quietly.

“Maybe both.”

Four months later I moved to another city.

I had a small apartment, a desk beneath the window, and two cups in the kitchen, although guests rarely came. In the mornings I worked as an administrator at a nursing home. In the evenings I attended nursing courses.

With my first salary I paid the last part of Elena’s debts.

!!!  Part 4 — My husband did not let me bathe our child for three weeks, but after one question from me, his face turned pale

I attached the receipt to the refrigerator.

That night I stood in front of it for a long time and, for the first time, I was not afraid of the next month.

When winter came, a little girl whom I helped at the home gave me a drawing. In the drawing, two women stood in the snow, and between them was a small house.

“This is you and your sister,” she told me.

“I am shorter.”

“Not anymore.”

I smiled at her words.

In January I received a letter from Declan.

“Sophia, I know I have no right to ask anything of you. But if you ever want to talk, I will be here.”

I looked at the letter for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“Talking is possible. Returning — no. I am already home.”

No reply came.

Only once, several weeks later, I found a small parcel at the door. Inside was a copper bell.

The one that had hung from the handle of my basket in the Walsh house.

I hung the bell beside the window. Every morning, when the wind moved it, a small, clear sound rang through the room.

I no longer waited for anyone.

I no longer hid from anyone.

And for the first time in my life, the bell was not asking for help — it was announcing freedom.

Silence protected me.
