Part 4 — I found an empty cradle and a wedding ring in my house, but it was the lawyer’s call that made my hand tremble for the first time

I could not listen to the voice message to the end.

Robert took the phone from my hand and turned off the sound.

“First we have to protect ourselves until the meeting,” he said.

“From whom?”

“From the people to whom you transferred the money.”

It was eleven at night. In the office, only the sound of rain and the heavy ticking of the wall clock could be heard. Claire stood by the window. She held Noah’s little bear in her hand, and its drooping paw was wrapped around her finger.

My phone rang again.

It was Vanessa.

“Daniel, where are you?” Her voice was trembling. “The bank called me. They sent a claim against my apartment.”

“I did not touch your apartment.”

“You told me that everything was under control!”

Robert raised his hand.

“Tell her not to call again.”

“Vanessa, I cannot talk to you now.”

“No, now you will listen to me! You transferred money deposited into your company to my account too. If I sink, I will drag you down with me!”

The connection was cut off.

Claire slowly looked at me.

“I did not know this either.”

“I can explain this.”

“You have been repeating that for six months.”

Robert opened the computer and played the audit recording. My own voice sounded in the room.

“You will not tell Claire anything. The money will be returned in two months. If anyone asks, Vanessa’s company is paying a service fee.”

My voice.

My words.

My lie.

I sat down on the chair. I no longer had strength in my knees.

“Where did you record this conversation?” I asked.

“In your company,” Claire answered. “You installed the new recording system yourself because you did not trust the employees.”

For the first time I heard my own voice from the outside. It was calm, confident, and almost cheerful. As if I were destroying someone else’s family.

Robert opened a second file.

“This concerns not only that company, Daniel. The transfers were going to an account nominally belonging to a supplier, but its real owner is your cousin Mark.”

“Mark was bankrupt.”

“He is not anymore. He has a warehouse built on your money.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I did not want you to be arrested,” she said. “I wanted Noah to have a home left.”

“And now?”

“Now I can no longer save you from your decisions.”

At eight in the morning, twelve people were waiting for me in the company’s meeting room. Glasses of water stood on the glass table, but no one had drunk. My father’s portrait hung on the wall. His eyes seemed to be looking directly at me.

Mark came in last.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said. “Daniel gave me the money temporarily.”

Claire opened the folder.

“Temporarily? Four years?”

Mark opened his mouth, but could not make a sound.

Robert distributed documents to the board members. The audit report, bank statements, hotel records, voice recording, and my father’s letter appeared on one table.

“I was saving the company,” I said.

Claire answered me calmly:

“You were not managing your own life, Daniel. You were forcing everyone to live inside your lies.”

The chairman of the meeting announced the vote. My authority was suspended. The bank froze the loan. Mark’s accounts were sent for inspection. And a separate investigation began against Vanessa into the amounts she had received from me.

Claire did not smile at any moment.

Neither was I happy.

When I left the office, the security employee handed me my pass.

“You will no longer need this, Mr. Carter.”

When I returned home, the nursery was empty.

Only one small scratch remained in the cradle, where Noah’s bear touched the wooden edge every night. One white shawl of Claire’s hung in the closet. In its pocket I found a plastic hospital bracelet on which Noah’s date of birth was written.

I sat down on the chair and understood for the first time what an empty house meant.

Not silence.

Absence.

That same evening the lawyer called me.

“Claire is asking to live separately for the time being. You will be able to see the child only according to an agreed schedule.”

“I know.”

“You can fight in court.”

I went to the window. Even Noah’s little bicycle was no longer in the yard, because we had not yet managed to buy it.

“I will not fight for what I lost through my actions,” I said.

Robert was silent for a long time.

“Are you sure?”

“For the first time, I am.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — En la fiesta de compromiso de mi hijo me bañaron con una manguera, pero cuando él salió al jardín su prometida dejó de sonreír

Three weeks later I met Claire and Noah at Linda’s house. Noah held a small wooden spoon and tapped it on the floor. When he saw me, he looked at me for several seconds, and then stretched his arms toward me.

It was the hardest moment of my life.

His trust still existed.

But my right no longer did.

“Daddy has come,” I said quietly.

Claire handed the child to me.

“You can stay until six in the evening.”

“Thank you.”

“Do not thank me. Just do not be late this time.”

I kissed Noah on the head. I smelled milk and baby shampoo. This smell had been in the house every day before, but then I had not noticed it.

In the following months I moved into a small apartment near the river. In the mornings I worked in a neighborhood café, and in the evenings, together with a financial consultant, I learned how to cover the company’s debts. I sold several cars. And my watch too.

Vanessa wrote to me twice.

The first time she wrote that everything was my fault.

The second time—that she could return if I went back to my old life.

I deleted both messages.

Mark sent me a letter not from prison, but through an investigator: he had not yet had his trial, but his accounts were frozen and the warehouse had passed into the bank’s ownership. I did not answer.

I was not happy about his fall.

I simply was no longer going to save him.

Four months later Noah drew a picture for the first time. Claire sent me a photo. There were three figures in the drawing: a small child, a woman with long hair, and a man holding the sun in his hands. The man had enormous ears.

“Why do I have such ears?” I asked Noah.

He looked at me with laughter.

“So that you will listen to me.”

Those words struck me more strongly than any sentence.

That evening I told Claire:

“I will try to always listen to you. Even if you never trust me again.”

“Trust is not requested, Daniel. Trust is made every day.”

“I know.”

The first snow came at the beginning of December. Noah stood by the window and drew a circle on the glass surface with his little finger. I sat beside him and sewed the wooden bear. Its paw had come off the previous week.

!!!  Part 4 — My Abandoned Ex-Boyfriend Burst into the Emergency Room with a Child, but When He Saw My Belly, the Color Drained from His Face

Claire told me that the child still needed it before sleep.

I held the needle awkwardly, but in the end the stitch came out. Small, crooked, and noticeable.

In the evening Claire called me.

“He wants to stay with you today,” she told me.

“I am ready.”

“One more thing. The bank has completed the sale of your old house.”

My heart contracted, but this time it was not fear.

“Good,” I answered.

“A lot of things were left there.”

“What is necessary is already with me.”

The line remained silent for several seconds.

“Daniel, do you really not want to return anymore?”

I went to the window. Noah held that little bear in his hands, its newly sewn paw pressed against his chest.

“I want to return home, Claire. But not to the house I built with lies.”

She said nothing.

It was not a refusal.

Nor a promise.

It was simply the truth.

The next morning I put Noah’s shoes on him. He hugged the bear to his chest and stopped at the door.

“Shall we go?”

“Let’s go.”

Snow was falling outside. The street looked like a white sheet on which I had not yet written anything.

I took the child’s hand.

This time I did not let go.

Missed the beginning?
