Part 4 — After the Divorce, I Started Caring for a Rich Man, and on the Very First Night His Order Shook the Whole House

After Richard pressed the button, the house woke up all at once.

Somewhere below, the alarm went off. Chloe screamed. Her mother stumbled on the stairs and clung to the railing.

Ethan looked toward the door.

“What did you do?” he asked Richard.

“What you never thought I could do.”

The headlights of cars lit up in the yard.

Ethan took out his phone and quickly dialed a number.

“Call the lawyer,” he told Chloe. “Right now. Tell him that Maya stole the documents and Richard is in danger.”

Chloe picked up the phone, but after several seconds her face changed.

“He is not answering.”

“Call again!”

“He already told me that he withdrew from the case.”

Ethan froze.

The door opened and two investigators entered the room. Behind them stood Nino, my former classmate, and a woman I had never seen before.

“I am Richard Vans’s new lawyer,” she said. “And this is the investigator who has worked on the case of this accident for the last eight months.”

Ethan tried to laugh.

“You entered here without permission.”

“No,” the investigator answered and showed a warrant. “We have the court’s permission.”

I looked at the recorder lying on the bed. It was still wrapped in the cloth. I remembered the blue pen mark hidden behind my father’s photograph. Then I understood how strange life is: my father left me only one sentence, but it was precisely those words that gave me the strength not to stop breathing in this house either.

“Maya,” the lawyer told me, “you can turn on the recording yourself.”

I took the recorder.

My fingers were trembling.

I pressed the button.

The rumble of an engine sounded in the room, then Ethan’s voice.

“The brakes are already disconnected. If he survives, he will not be able to sign at the hospital.”

Ethan’s face became gray.

“It is fabricated,” he whispered.

“The voice was examined by experts,” the lawyer said. “The recording was made on the same day the car was at the workshop.”

Chloe stepped back.

“I only called the doctor. I did not know they were planning to kill him.”

“You entered false information into Richard’s medical history,” the investigator replied. “That is enough to prove complicity.”

Richard slowly raised his right leg. This time in front of everyone’s eyes. The leg rose several centimeters, the toes curled, and it lowered again.

!!!  Volví de la misión y encontré a mi esposa irreconocible; cuando mencioné la firma, mi hermano dejó de sonreír

His mother covered her mouth with her hand.

“You… all this time…”

“Yes, Mother. All this time.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every week you sent the lawyer a report saying that I could not even think rationally.”

Her hands began to tremble.

Ethan looked toward me.

“Maya, you do not understand how much money is involved in this.”

“Now I understand everything,” I told him.

“I will connect you with Miguel. He will help you. It would be better for both of you.”

His words sounded as though I were still standing in that old house and Ophelia was telling me that I would not endure living alone.

“I have already saved my life,” I answered. “Away from you.”

The investigators put handcuffs on Ethan. Chloe began to cry. Richard’s mother knelt beside the wheelchair and for the first time no longer looked like the head of this family.

But another call came that night.

The lawyer turned on the speakerphone. On the other side of the line, the voice of my former husband, Miguel, sounded.

“Ethan promised us that Maya would stay here and, when necessary, would not testify against us. Now everything is falling apart.”

I closed my eyes.

Miguel still did not know that his voice had already been recorded.

And he did not know either that the heaviest blow for him was coming not from the Vans house, but from my new life.

The next morning the investigators questioned me for hours. Where I had stood, what I had heard, who had spoken to me, how many times Chloe had checked my bag. I answered every question.

Richard’s lawyer spread documents on the table.

“The signatures controlling the company are forged,” she told me. “Ethan also used the accounts and took several loans in Richard’s name.”

“Why did you not warn Richard from the beginning?”

“Because Chloe checked every person who came to him. You were the only one they had no idea was watching them carefully.”

I laughed, although there was nothing funny.

They thought that a divorced, penniless woman would be easy to control.

That same day Miguel contacted me.

“Maya, listen to me,” he told me. “Everything is not as it appears.”

“Your voice is not heard in the recording.”

Silence fell.

“I was only helping Ethan.”

“Did you know that he damaged the car?”

“I did not know that Richard would survive.”

These words stopped the room.

Miguel gave himself away.

Several hours later his lawyer also withdrew. He stated that Miguel was giving false testimony and was leaving the case. Miguel called several more times, but I no longer answered.

In the evening Richard asked me to go down to the library with him. For the first time he operated the wheelchair himself. At first slowly, following the wall. Then he stopped.

“Are you afraid?” he asked.

“Not more than you.”

“I was afraid all night that the door would open and I still would not be able to stop them.”

“But you stopped them.”

“I could not have done it alone.”

The golden box was still standing on the library shelf. Beside it I saw a small photograph—Richard and his father, years ago, on one boat. The corner of the photograph was broken.

“This house will also become empty,” he said.

“It may be empty and still peaceful.”

He looked at me.

“Will you stay here?”

“Not as a caregiver.”

“Then how?”

“I do not know yet.”

Three weeks later the court imposed pretrial detention on Ethan. Chloe confessed to the crime and began cooperating with the investigation. Richard’s mother publicly apologized, but I did not answer her letter.

I rented a small apartment on the other side of the city.

The tram lines could be seen from the window. In the morning the sound of the tracks woke me, and in the evening the smell of cinnamon from a nearby bakery came in.

Richard offered me administrative work at the company. I refused until he could stand on his feet independently.

“You do not want to work with me?” he asked.

“I do, but not because someone saves me.”

He nodded.

“Then let us begin equally.”

Several months later he took his first step in the rehabilitation hall. I stood at the door, but I did not offer him my hand. He needed that. So did I.

!!!  Mi esposo convirtió el nombre de nuestra hija en un espectáculo, pero al verme entrar, su amante dejó de sonreír

My father’s photograph always stood on my desk. The mark of his blue pen was still visible behind the frame.

One evening I received a letter from Miguel.

“I know that I hurt you greatly. Ophelia is ill. She wants to see you. Maybe you could speak with us at least once.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply:

“I will not return to the house where my pain was declared my guilt. I wish you peace. I choose mine.”

I sent the letter and put down the phone.

The first snow came the next day.

I was sitting in a café with Nino when Richard sent me a photograph. He was standing in the rehabilitation hall, leaning on the railing with one hand. Beside him stood a small board, and on it was written: “One step today.”

I saved the photograph.

After returning home in the evening, I carefully cleaned the frame of my father’s photograph. The blue pen mark was still there, small and clear, like that night when I first dared to defend myself in someone’s locked house.

Now I no longer waited for anyone to open the door for me.

The key was in my hand.

And for the first time I understood that the door I had closed behind me was not the door of a prison, but the first door of my freedom.

Missed the beginning?
