My Brother Humiliated Me in Front of the Entire Unit, but After Saying Two Words, His Sergeant’s Smile Disappeared

My brother threw my pass into the gravel and demanded in front of the entire unit that I prove I had ever done anything important in my life.

At Camp Pendleton, the midday sun heated the asphalt so intensely that the air shimmered above it. The smells of diesel, sea salt, and freshly mowed grass mixed together. American flags waved noisily in the wind, children climbed onto armored vehicles, and families took photographs.

It was Family Day.

My mother practically dragged me out of the house.

“Please, Eleanor,” she told me in the morning as I got into the car. “Tyler wants us to be there.”

Tyler had never needed family. He needed an audience.

My brother always acted as if he were the main character in every room. Father was supposed to be proud of his uniform, Mother was supposed to take photographs of him, and the relatives were supposed to post a caption on the internet: Our hero.

I was wearing jeans, a white shirt, sunglasses, and a dark blue jacket. I had neither a medal nor a uniform on. That day I specifically wanted to look ordinary.

Tyler saw me immediately.

“Look who has come,” he called. “The Hayes family ghost.”

Mother sighed.

“Tyler, enough.”

“Walk carefully, Ellie,” he continued. “Don’t accidentally enter a restricted area. They don’t just let office workers in here like that.”

Several young Marines snickered. Father lowered his gaze to the ground. I stood silently and touched with my right hand the small brass whistle in my jacket pocket. I had found it years earlier in a survival bag and had carried it with me ever since.

Tyler was irritated by my silence.

“Tell everyone what you do,” he stepped in front of me. “Mother thinks you work in the government.”

The gunner standing nearby laughed.

“She probably organizes documents,” Tyler said.

“Eleanor, don’t answer,” Mother quietly begged me.

That was when I saw Chief Sergeant Marcus Reed standing beside him. He was not laughing like the others. His gaze had stopped on me, as if he were looking not at my face, but at the past.

Tyler did not notice it.

“Come on, Ellie,” he said loudly. “There are real soldiers here. Real missions, real dangers, and real code names.”

!!!  Mi esposo abandonó a nuestros trillizos por unas vacaciones, pero al abrir su maleta en el hotel dejó de sonreír

The last word hung heavily in the air.

I knew how many nights I had spent listening to the quiet crackle of a radio. I knew how many coordinates I remembered by heart and how many names no one mentioned anymore. I knew why I no longer spoke about those years.

Tyler reached out and flicked my visitor pass with his finger. The clasp broke. The pass fell onto the gravel.

Everyone saw it.

I slowly bent down, picked it up, and brushed off the dust. My fingers obeyed me calmly, but an old siren went off inside my heart.

“What was your code name?” Tyler asked mockingly.

A circle formed around them. Reed raised his head slightly.

I looked first at him, then at my brother.

“Fury Ten.”

The laughter stopped at that very moment.

The color drained from Reed’s face. Several older infantrymen straightened their backs. One man almost dropped his cup from his hand.

Tyler furrowed his brows.

“What is funny?” he asked and gave a nervous laugh.

No one answered.

The wind made the flags flap more loudly. And for the first time I saw fear in my brother’s eyes.

Marcus Reed took one step toward me.

“Ma’am…” he said.

Something in his voice made Mother cover her mouth with her hand.

Tyler looked toward him.

“Sergeant, do you know her?”

Reed did not answer. His gaze was fixed only on me.

Then he looked at the radio attached to his belt, as if he were struggling with a decision, and finally bent down close to me.

“Did you bring that recording?” he asked in a whisper.

I did not have time to answer, because Reed suddenly signaled to the security officer to open the door. The officer took a dark-colored folder in his hands and came directly toward us. Tyler moved toward it, while my hand slowly moved toward the folder…

I snatched the folder from his hand before Tyler could touch it.

“You can’t open this,” he whispered.

“That is exactly why I have to open it,” I answered.

The security officer locked the door. Only we, Reed, and my mother entered inside. The air conditioner hummed in the room, and the smell of burnt coffee stood on the table.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Mi esposo me dejó en el suelo frente a su familia, pero el golpe en la puerta hizo que todos dejaran de reír

Reed looked at Tyler.

“Have they never mentioned this name to you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” my brother said.

My old signature was visible on the folder. Below it was a date that I had told my family I had spent abroad studying.

Tyler turned pale.

“Ellie, this is no longer a joke.”

“It was never a joke for me.”

Reed pulled out the first sheet, but immediately the telephone rang. He looked at the screen and his face changed.

“Don’t answer,” I said.

“If I don’t answer, it may be too late.”

“It’s already too late.”

He disconnected the call.

Mother looked at me.

“What have you been hiding all these years?”

A small memory device fell out of the folder. The moment Tyler saw it, he reached out his hand.

Reed grabbed him by the wrist.

“Touch it one more time and you’ll lose your uniform too.”

A heavy silence descended in the room. I picked up the device and connected it to Reed’s computer.

Only one audio recording appeared on the screen.

The date was six years earlier.

And the author of the recording turned out to be Tyler’s voice…

Tyler’s voice sounded through the room. At first it was hoarse, then it became clearly audible to everyone.

“Leave this place. Fury Ten is not coming back.”

Mother grabbed the chair.

A second voice answered in the recording:

“Are you sure she is dead?”

“If she isn’t, the entire operation will collapse,” Tyler said. “I changed the coordinates. They are waiting at the old location.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the room.

Reed slowly turned toward my brother.

“Is that your voice?”

Tyler moved his lips, but could not answer.

And I saw again the night from six years earlier: a dusty valley, a darkened radio, wounded people, and a blinking point on the map that was in the wrong place. Then I realized that someone had deliberately changed the coordinates. I realized that help was heading into a trap.

“I am speaking to you in that recording,” I told Tyler. “You asked me to go back. Then everyone thought I had died in the operation.”

!!!  Returning to my parents’ house, I found a strange girl with my own face waiting for me, and one word from her froze my mother on the spot

“I saved you,” he said with difficulty.

“No. You saved your own career.”

Reed put a second sheet of paper on the table.

“This is the official report. It says here that Eleanor changed the coordinates.”

Mother looked at my brother.

“You wrote this about her?”

Tyler lowered his eyes.

“I had no other way.”

“You always have a way,” I said. “You simply chose the cheapest one.”

Reed turned off the recording. His face resembled stone.

“Tomorrow morning this case will be handed over to military investigators.”

Tyler jumped up from the chair.

“You can’t sacrifice me!”

“Not me,” Reed answered. “Your own voice will sacrifice you.”

At that moment, the phone placed inside the folder lit up. A message was coming from the same number that had called Reed.

I looked at the screen and my blood froze.

The message said: “If Fury Ten is alive, then the second recording must also be erased. Do you know who has the child?”…
