Eight years later, my ex-husband planned to humiliate me at the Christmas table, but when I stepped out of the helicopter, his smile disappeared

At the moment when I was about to write back a refusal to my former husband’s Christmas invitation, his mother called me and said that the family wanted to see me “for the last time.” Outside, the December frost stood, while white lights flickered on Austin’s skyscrapers beyond the office window. I held the phone in my hand as if a wound from eight years ago still hurt there.

Marcus Reynolds. His name on the screen was enough to make my breath catch that night.

The eighth year was coming to an end since I told him I was pregnant and he first declared my words a lie, and then sent me divorce papers. He did not even listen to the baby’s heartbeat. Not once did he ask what the doctor had said. He simply left, changed his number, and disappeared from my life as if I had never existed.

And now he was writing to me: “Come to my mother’s house on December twenty-fifth. The family wants to see you for the last time.”

I laughed quietly.

My assistant, Dana, peered in at the door. In her hand she held a small wooden toy that one of the children had left at the office.

“Kesha, are you all right?” she asked me. “Don’t tell me you’re planning to go there.”

I looked at the city lights through the window and put the toy on the table.

“That is exactly where I’m going.”

“They are trying to humiliate you.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you allowing them to do it?”

I felt a familiar, calm warmth in my stomach. For the first time in eight years, I was no longer afraid of their opinion.

“Because this time I’m not going alone.”

On Christmas morning the sky was so blue, as if even winter had a secret. In the helicopter all four children sat next to one another. Noah had a small red scarf around his neck, Ethan held a plastic dinosaur in his hand, a golden star shone in Sophia’s hair, and Olivia had a blue bell-shaped talisman on her knees—the one that jingled at every step.

“Are we really going to see Grandpa?” Noah asked.

“And Grandma?” Sophia immediately added.

“Today we will learn many things,” I answered.

All four were eight years old. All four had Marcus’s eyes, smile, and stubborn chin. The man who had abandoned fatherhood even before birth did not even know that he was the father of four children.

When the snowy mountains of Boulder appeared, my heart quickened. It was no longer fear. It was more like the last moment remaining before opening that door, when the truth still belongs only to you.

The helicopter landed in front of the Reynolds house at 11:47. Snow swirled, and the wind from the rotors struck the children’s cheeks. I stepped out first, then Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and finally Olivia.

The door of the house opened. Patricia appeared. When she saw the children, the glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor.

Marcus stood behind her. Beside him stood a blonde woman in a red dress, and an engagement ring shone on her finger. Marcus first looked at Noah, then at the others. His smile slowly disappeared.

“Marcus… who are they?” the woman asked in a whisper.

I entered the house and put my hand on Olivia’s shoulder.

“Merry Christmas,” I said calmly. “I brought your grandchildren.”

The engagement-ring box fell from Marcus’s hand.

Olivia stopped in front of him, tilted her head slightly, and asked one question. Marcus opened his mouth to answer, but just then the man standing behind him raised a folder in his hand and said…

Marcus did not utter a sound. He looked into the children’s eyes and seemed to be trying to turn all four faces into one memory.

“I… this is impossible,” he said at last.

“The only impossible thing was for you to listen to me even once,” I answered.

Patricia leaned against the wall. Her fingers were still touching the red stains from the shattered glass.

“Kesha, were you pregnant?” she asked.

“I was pregnant with four children.”

The blonde woman removed the ring.

“You told me that she could never become a mother,” she said to Marcus.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

“Didn’t you know, or did you not want to find out?” I asked.

Cold entered the room, although the door was already closed. The children gathered around my lap. Noah searched for my hand, while Olivia’s little bell continued to jingle.

The man with the folder stepped forward.

“I am Daniel Hart, Mrs. Reynolds’s attorney. This conversation will be difficult for everyone, but we are not here today only because of the children.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Mother, what are you doing?”

For the first time Patricia looked away from her son.

Daniel put the folder on the table and opened the lock. Marcus raised a hand to stop him, but the attorney had already taken out the first sheet.

“Before you read this, you should know that your family hid one detail from eight years ago from everyone…”

Daniel spread the sheet on the table. Wood crackled in the fireplace, but no one in the room could hear its sound anymore.

“This is the clinic archive,” he said. “Kesha Reynolds underwent an examination in the twelfth week of pregnancy. The record says: four fetuses, all healthy.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Four…” he repeated.

“Yes,” I said. “Four children. And the very next day you told me that I had deceived you.”

Patricia grabbed the chair.

“Marcus, you told me that Kesha was pregnant by another man.”

“That is what I thought,” he defended himself.

“No,” Daniel said, raising a second sheet. “You did not think that. You planned it.”

He took a small memory card from the envelope and connected it to the television. The kitchen from eight years ago appeared on the screen. I saw the recording for the first time. Back then I did not have a camera in the house, but Patricia did—with her claim that it was for security.

Young Marcus stood on the screen, holding my medical report in his hand.

“If there are four, then I have even more reason to leave,” he was saying. “I cannot raise four children, and I do not want to remain in this woman’s life.”

Patricia’s voice was heard off camera.

“Tell people that she deceived you. That way no one will blame you.”

“I will file the divorce papers today.”

Such silence fell over the room, as if all the windows had been locked at the same time.

Marcus looked at the screen. He was listening to his own voice, and his face was slowly changing.

“This was recorded illegally,” he said.

“The recording has already been certified for court,” Daniel answered. “It is accompanied by your signed waiver of parental responsibility and the clinic documents.”

The blonde woman walked toward the door.

“I am canceling this wedding.”

“Laura, wait.”

“You lied to me for eight years. And today four children came so that your lie could be seen on your face.”

Laura put the ring on the table and left.

Marcus looked toward me.

“Kesha, please, let’s start everything over.”

“You do not want to start over. You want your present life not to fall apart.”

Daniel’s phone rang. He listened, lost color, and came to me.

“Kesha, the clinic just called me. They said that someone requested one embryo’s file this morning in your name. But the birth of these four does not end there. There is a fifth record that may be connected to these children’s lives…”
