Part 4 — My Husband Forced Me to Pay for the Baptism Feast, but After One Sentence, His Mother Dropped the Glass from Her Hand

Chloe’s finger touched the screen, and a video started playing in the hall.

The hospital corridor was visible in the frame. It was two o’clock at night. Daniel was standing there, holding Lily’s birth documents.

An administrator was sitting in front of him.

“It is impossible to change this form without the wife’s consent,” the woman was saying.

“I am the father,” Daniel answered. “My surname must be written on the child’s birth certificate.”

“You do not have confirmation of the biological father.”

Daniel took an envelope out of his pocket.

“I have money. You understand too that this family does not need a scandal.”

The video stopped.

No one in the hall made a sound anymore.

Daniel stared at the phone as if he had seen his own face in it for the first time.

“This was obtained illegally,” he said.

“No,” Marina answered. “It is a recording from the hospital cameras. And the administration has already given it to the police.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“Jennifer, this is not my fault. Chloe deceived me. I was only trying to settle everything.”

“For everyone except me.”

His phone rang.

His lawyer’s name appeared on the screen. Daniel answered immediately.

“Help me. You need to come now.”

The answer was so loud that several people heard it.

“I no longer represent your case, Daniel. This morning I learned about the transfers and the recordings. The police are already on their way.”

“You take money from me!”

“I no longer want your money.”

The call ended.

Daniel fell silent again.

It was the first minute when he had no one left to hide behind.

His mother took a step toward me.

“Jennifer, please, do not destroy the family.”

I checked Lily’s hand. The little silver bracelet lightly glittered on her fingers.

“I did not destroy the family. You simply saw now that it no longer existed.”

The police arrived a few minutes later.

Daniel first tried to remain calm. Then he raised his voice. Finally he fell to his knees and assured me persuasively that he would return everything to me.

“I do not want my money,” I said.

“Then what do you want?”

“To live peacefully.”

They put handcuffs on him. I did not follow him when he left.

That same evening Marina drove me home. When I opened the door, the balloons Daniel had bought for the baptism were still standing in the living room. One had fallen to the floor and was silently bumping against the chandelier.

I entered Lily’s room.

A photograph of Daniel was lying beside the bed. He was holding the child in it and smiling for the camera. I picked up the photograph, looked at it for several seconds, and then put it in a drawer.

The room was not empty.

But for the first time his shadow was no longer visible.

In the following days the calls did not stop. Daniel’s mother cried, his father apologized, and the coworkers wrote one after another that they had always suspected “something strange.”

I said the same thing to everyone:

“Now you know. My lawyer will take care of the rest.”

Daniel tried to regain control even from prison. First he told me that the truth about Chloe’s child would be rejected in court. Then he sent me a letter in which he presented himself as the victim.

“If you had talked to me, everything would have been different.”

I read the letter to the end and did not answer.

One week later he listened to his own words himself.

His testimony was recorded in the courtroom. The lawyer played the audio recording: “She has nowhere to go. The child and the joint account are in my hands.”

Daniel was sitting on the chair, with his head lowered.

The judge asked him:

“Is this your voice?”

He was silent for a long time.

“Yes.”

“And did you say these words?”

“Yes.”

His voice lost its confidence for the first time.

The court held him responsible for financial fraud, illegal access to the account, and forgery of documents. A separate investigation was also begun into all matters connected with Lily. Daniel was forbidden to approach me, and part of the joint property was transferred into my name.

I did not welcome his punishment.

I simply no longer tried to save him from the consequences he himself had created.

Three months later I moved into a small apartment in a quiet part of the city. From the window I could see the tops of the trees in the morning. I returned to work part-time and spent the evenings with Lily.

She could already laugh.

One evening, while I was making porridge in the kitchen, Lily drew me a picture with her colored pencils. On the sheet there were two large circles—one hers, one mine—and a yellow sun above.

“Is this us?” I asked.

Lily could not say a word yet, but she wrapped her hand around my fingers.

I understood that a family is sometimes created not by blood, but by the hand that does not leave you.

I received the last message from Daniel on the first snow of winter.

“Give me one chance. At least for Lily. I have changed.”

I left his number on the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote him an answer:

“Lily needs a peaceful home, not promises. Please do not contact me again.”

And I blocked the number.

That night snow fell quietly. Lily slept beside me, while her silver bracelet lightly tinkled under the blanket with every breath.

I took off the bracelet, put it in a small box, and then fastened it around her wrist again.

This sound was no longer a reminder of the past.

It was proof that my child was breathing peacefully.

And I—for the first time in a long while—was breathing together with her.
