Part 4 — When My Husband Threw Me onto the Ice and Ordered the Orchestra to Play, the Conductor Suddenly Lost Color

The ice cracked loudly.

Police officers rushed into the hall. Their heavy shoes struck the wooden floor, and they held flashlights in their hands. Ryan could no longer take even one step.

“Hands up!” Investigator Mari shouted.

Ryan immediately looked toward the phone.

“This is a misunderstanding. My wife is in shock. The conductor is frightened. The recording could have been edited.”

“Hands on the wall,” Mari told him.

“I need my lawyer.”

“He is already on his way,” Elias said. “But this time he will no longer answer your calls.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You would not dare.”

For the first time, Elias did not step back.

“I have been daring for years. I was simply lying to myself that silence would save someone.”

Mari put handcuffs on Ryan.

Ryan was still looking at me.

“Brooke, tell them that this is all our private matter.”

I could not say anything.

I had justified everything for him for so many years that I had forgotten my own voice.

Mari knelt beside the crack in the ice. The specialists carefully cut the surface. The hidden layer underneath slowly appeared.

There were not invitations there, but thin pockets made of hard plastic. Each contained bank statements, powers of attorney, copies of passports, and short letters written by the women.

One of the letters said: “If I disappear, look for the music.”

On another: “I do not trust Ryan. He said that my house already belonged to him.”

On the third there was only one sentence: “Elias knows everything, but he is afraid.”

Elias lowered his eyes.

“Where are these women?” I asked Mari.

“Some women were found in other cities. Some are still being searched for. But now we have their names, financial traces, and recordings.”

Ryan stood pale.

“This is fake.”

Mari raised the first letter.

“That is your signature on the power of attorney.”

!!!  She left me alone during childbirth and went to relax with her lover, but when she returned home, her mother-in-law’s face suddenly changed

“They made me sign it.”

“Who?”

Ryan fell silent.

Then Mari turned on the recorder.

His own voice sounded in the hall:

“Do not stop the music.”

Ryan seemed to be hearing these words for the first time. There was no color left in his face. He slowly sat on the wooden bench that he had previously been breaking with his foot.

The woman was crying in the recorder.

“Open the door for me, Ryan.”

Her voice struck the walls and returned.

Ryan hid his head in his hands.

“I did not want it to end this way.”

“But you chose it yourself,” I told him.

This was the first sentence I had said before him without fear.

That same night I did not return home.

The next morning, at seven o’clock in the morning, I went to my apartment only to take my things. His suits hung in the wardrobe in the bedroom. My books lay on the floor, as if he had not even left them a place.

There were two glasses on the kitchen table.

One was empty.

In the other, water from melted ice had remained.

The small study hit me the hardest. My photographs were no longer there. Ryan had taken them down from the wall, but he had left one picture on the windowsill: I was sixteen years old, standing beside my grandmother, and wearing a small silver bell on my right shoe.

The bell could be seen even in the picture.

I took the photograph and put it in my bag.

Then I realized that the house was no longer a place I was leaving.

It was a place from which I had survived.

Two weeks later, the court prohibited Ryan from disposing of property. The women’s lawyers froze his accounts. Elias testified and told the investigators about his fear to the very end.

I did not go to every hearing in the courtroom.

Sometimes victory also means no longer looking at the person who distorted your life.

A month later I began working at a small theater in the city. I checked tickets, wiped dust from the seats, and turned on the stage lights in the evenings.

In the first days, my hands froze when the music began.

Then I got used to it.

One evening Elias called me.

“One of the women has been found,” he told me. “Clara is alive. She said that after your recording, other women also decided to testify.”

I leaned against the wall.

“Thank you for opening the door that day.”

“Thank you for staying on the ice.”

In a few months I rented a new apartment near the sea. It was small, but every window let in light. In the morning I drank coffee by the window. In the evening my neighbor’s girl, Nina, came to me and drew.

One day she drew a large hall on a sheet of paper. And beneath the ice there were countless small doors.

“These women are coming out from here,” she told me.

“All of them?”

“Everyone who has found a door.”

I attached her drawing to the refrigerator.

The first snow came in December.

That same morning I received a message from Ryan.

“Come, talk to me at least once. Everything can be fixed.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote only one sentence:

“I am already fixed. I do not need to return to you.”

I blocked his number.

A few minutes later there was a knock at the door. Elias was standing there, holding a small box.

“The police found this,” he told me. “Under the ice, in the last layer.”

In the box was my left glove. Ryan had kept it that night, as if my fall belonged to his collection.

The glove was still slightly damp.

I opened the window and cold air entered the room. Then I removed the small silver bell from my shoe and placed it on the shelf together with the glove.

!!!  Part 4 — I Found a Letter on the Refrigerator After Leaving My Son Alone for Six Days, and My Husband’s Face Suddenly Changed

The bell moved lightly.

This time I stopped the music.

And the silence was mine.

Missed the beginning?
