Hot water was still running down from my shoulders when I heard the sound of glass breaking from my bedroom and heard my mother-in-law’s voice:
“A married woman does not need to paint herself like that, unless she wants to attract men’s attention in the street.”
It was approaching nine o’clock in the morning in São Paulo. Andre had gone to inspect a construction site, while I was getting ready for an evening work party. I was supposed to be alone in the apartment.
But the door had not turned out to be locked.
I wrapped a towel around myself and came out of the room. Celina was standing by my dressing table. In her hand she held a black bag, in which smashed lipsticks, broken powder cases, and spilled creams lay. The bitter, alcoholic smell of my expensive perfume stood in the room.
“What are you doing?”
Celina did not even look at me. She opened a small glass bottle and poured the remaining perfume into the bag.
“I am cleaning my son’s house.”
“These are my things. Put them down.”
“Yours? Andre works all day, while you throw money into powders and perfumes.”
I was a financial control manager and every month I paid half of the mortgage from my own salary. Celina knew this. She simply never believed that my money was truly mine.
“Leave my house immediately.”
“You are throwing the mother out of my son’s house?”
She opened a drawer. Inside were the receipts for my expenses. When I closed it, Celina seized me by the wrist. Her nails dug into my skin.
“I gave you the key for emergencies, not so that you could enter without asking.”
“I am your mother-in-law. I do not need permission.”
“I will call the police.”
“Call them. I will show everyone how you waste thousands while my son is killing himself at work.”
She took three new lipsticks and smashed them in front of my eyes. The golden caps rolled across the carpet. One small cap stopped by my foot; the first letter of my name was engraved on it.
“A decent woman does not need this much,” she said.
“Enough!”
I grabbed the bag. We both pulled at it at the same time. The plastic tore, and powder, cream, and perfume spilled onto the floor. Celina looked at the mess and smiled, as if she had expected all of this from the beginning.
Then I understood that the goal was not only to destroy my things. She wanted me to look small, guilty, and helpless in my own house.
The lock of the entrance door turned.
“Livia? Mother? What is happening here?” Andre’s voice sounded.
Andre entered the room. First he looked at my towel, then at the things scattered across the floor, and finally at his mother. Celina took several receipts out of the bag.
“You arrived in time, son. More than seven thousand reais, did you find? This woman destroyed your money.”
Andre picked up the first receipt and read it for a long time.
“The cardholder’s name is written here.”
“What difference does it make?” Celina muttered.
Andre slowly looked at me. At that moment something changed on his face. He looked at his mother, then at my bruised wrist, and said quietly:
“Mother, do you even know whose money paid for all this?”
Instead of answering, Celina pressed the bag more tightly against her chest. Andre reached his hand toward her…
Andre said sternly:
“Give me the bag.”
“Are you taking a stand against your own mother?”
“There is no opposition here. You entered without asking, destroyed my wife’s things, and left a mark on her hand.”
“I was doing this for you.”
“No. You did it because you could not accept that Livia and I chose to live independently of you.”
Celina’s face changed.
Andre asked her for the key. She refused.
“This is my son’s house!”
“It is our house. I will change the lock today.”
Celina left and swore at the door that Livia would take everything away from her. Andre did not run after her for the first time.
Soon the phone began to ring. In the family group Celina wrote that her son had beaten her and thrown her out of the house. Camila, Andre’s sister, called angrily. When she heard everything, her voice fell silent.
“She did the same to me,” she said. “Dresses, letters, medicines… she threw everything away.”
Andre asked carefully:
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought she was like that only with me. But three weeks ago Mother asked me when you were leaving the house and whether you were still using the emergency key.”
Silence fell in the room.
“Camila, what are you hiding from me?”
“She did not enter today by accident. She planned everything beforehand. And I have evidence with me that I have not yet shown…”
At Camila’s last words, Andre put the phone on the table. It was five in the evening. We had already changed the lock, but I still did not feel safe in the house. A dark mark was visible on my wrist, while the spilled stain of my perfume by the bed would not disappear.
“What evidence are you talking about?” Andre asked.
“Mother left a folder of documents with me,” Camila answered. “She told me to give it to you if something happened.”
Half an hour later she came to our apartment. In her hand she held a thin cardboard folder. Its edge was folded and dirty.
“I found this in her wardrobe,” Camila said. “I saw it by accident when I was looking for things. Mother knew that you would be here that day.”
There were printed messages and photographs taken in front of my office building in the folder. In one photograph I was talking with a male colleague. Beside it, in Celina’s handwriting, was written: “She will accuse her husband of cheating if he resists.”
Andre’s hands tensed.
“Why did she photograph all this?”
Camila handed me a second sheet. On it, in Celina’s handwriting, were the last digits of my card number, the amount of my salary, and the address of the work party.
“She wanted to prove to Andre that you were spending his money,” Camila said. “But this is still not the main thing.”
At the bottom of the folder lay a small memory card. Camila put it into her phone. The recording began.
Celina’s voice sounded:
“First I will break the things. Then I will show the receipts. When she gets angry, she will say that Livia attacked me. Andre will eventually think that the family is against him.”
In the recording another woman’s voice asked:
“What if he does not believe it?”
“Then he will force her to sell the apartment. She will not be able to pay the loan taken in my name and will return to me again.”
Andre stood up from the chair.
“Who is she talking to?”
The recording continued. Celina said that half of the apartment’s down payment had been paid with my savings, but she had not told Andre this in the contract. She wanted her son to believe that all the property had been created with the help of his family.
I could not utter a sound. The lie was so enormous that I could no longer breathe in the room.
Andre lowered his eyes.
“Livia, I knew this… but only because Mother told me the money was hers.”
“Did you believe me, or was it simply easier to believe her?”
He could not find an answer.
At that moment a new message arrived on Camila’s phone. The lawyer was writing that Celina had filed a statement in court that same morning: that we had attacked her and stolen her property.
Andre looked at the message. Then another one arrived.
Celina was already requesting that the apartment be seized…
