My mother was slapped at dinner and my house was declared their own, but my peace suddenly froze Fernanda’s smile

My mother still had her hands on her knees when I entered the house and saw how they were forcing her to work as a servant in my own home.

This was the house bought with six years of savings, in a quiet neighborhood of Querétaro. After my father’s death, my mother was left alone in a rented room in Puebla. And I worked night shifts in Canada, then in Spain, until the veins on my hands protruded from exhaustion. Every exhausted morning reminded me of one thing: my mother had to have her own, safe home.

That morning I returned unexpectedly. In my hands I held white flowers, sugar-free chocolates, and a warm wrap bought in Madrid. Around my neck I wore my mother’s old copper swallow pendant, which she had given me in childhood. Whenever I was nervous, I always touched it with my fingers.

I entered through the side door and immediately heard shouting.

“Faster, Rosario! The guests will arrive in an hour! Do you want them to think we live in a pigsty?”

My mother was scrubbing the floor in the yard with a stiff brush. Her hands were swollen, her knees wet and red. When she saw me, she stopped, but she did not run toward me. Only her eyes widened.

“Lucía… why didn’t you warn me?”

“I wanted it to be a surprise, Mom.”

She looked toward the kitchen.

“Please, child… don’t make a scene.”

Those words frightened me more than the shouting.

Fernanda appeared at the door, the wife of my brother, Alejandro. She held a wineglass in her hand and looked at me as if I were a guest.

“Oh, the traveler has returned. You arrived right on time. If you plan to stand there, at least help your mother.”

Behind her, everything in the living room had changed. My parents’ photographs were no longer visible. In their place were pictures of Fernanda and Alejandro, as if this house had belonged to them from the beginning.

I went up to the second floor. In the large bedroom prepared for my mother, Fernanda’s mother, Imelda, was lying.

“Where will my mother sleep?”

Alejandro appeared in the doorway, holding a half-empty glass.

“Lucía, don’t start. It’s temporary.”

“Where will she sleep?”

He pointed to the laundry room at the end of the hallway.

Behind a curtain stood a folding bed, a washing machine hummed beside it, and on top lay a thin blanket and an old pillow. My mother’s bag of blood-pressure medicines had been placed on the floor.

“Fernanda’s mother has back problems,” Alejandro said.

“My mother has arthritis.”

“But she doesn’t complain.”

The words caught in my throat. At that moment I understood for the first time that my mother was not continuing to live in this house; she was asking them for permission.

The sound of a plate breaking came from the kitchen. My mother’s hands were trembling and she dropped the tray. Fernanda went to her. I, Alejandro, Imelda, and two waiters were standing there.

“How many times do I have to tell you to be careful?”

“Forgive me, I’ll clean it…”

Fernanda raised her hand and slapped my mother in the face.

My mother clutched her cheek.

“You will not touch my mother a second time,” I said.

“Then teach her how to behave. We all help in this house.”

“This house is not yours.”

Fernanda snickered.

“You return after six years and give orders?”

My mother gripped my arm.

“Please, Lucía, stop.”

She pulled back her sleeve and I saw bruises on her wrist. Some were turning yellow, others were dark violet. They looked like fingerprints.

“I fell,” my mother told me immediately.

She did not look me in the eyes.

Then I found a sheet in a drawer: “Rosario’s duties.” Bathrooms, yard, ironing, kitchen, floors, windows, Fernanda’s clothes, Imelda’s clothes, and shopping. Only one name was written.

And money from my mother’s pension account had been transferred to Alejandro. The money was going to restaurants, expensive stores, and payments for things my mother needed nothing to do with.

What destroyed me most was the application hidden in the Bible. It was an application for admission to a nursing home. At the bottom, in my mother’s trembling handwriting, it said: “Maybe, if I leave, they will stop being angry.”

The guests arrived in the evening. Fernanda proudly showed them around the house, while my mother carried trays. When my mother’s hand trembled again, Fernanda snapped her fingers.

I took the tray from her and placed it on the table.

“Mom, come with me.”

I took her hand and led her to the head of the table in front of all the guests. Just then Alejandro pulled out a chair, while Fernanda quickly knelt in front of the cabinet and reached her fingers toward a black folder…

I stood beside my mother and looked at the table.

“Before you begin dinner, there is one thing you need to understand,” I said.

Fernanda snickered.

“The guests are not interested in family drama.”

!!!  Meu padrasto interrompeu minha cerimônia com um disparo, mas quando tentei permanecer de pé, o rosto dele perdeu a cor

“This is not drama. This is my mother’s life.”

Alejandro stood up.

“Lucía, let’s go outside.”

“No. Tell me here why you were taking my mother’s pension.”

Silence fell over the room. A waiter set down a glass and wiped it with a trembling hand.

“That money was for shared expenses,” Alejandro said.

“Then why doesn’t my mother know?”

Fernanda pressed the folder to her chest.

“You do not live here at all. We take care of her.”

My mother lowered her head.

“Lucía, child, go. Please.”

“I am not going to let you leave.”

Fernanda’s smile disappeared.

“You will not take anyone out of this house.”

I put my hand into my pocket and closed my fingers around the little copper swallow pendant. For years I had promised my mother that this house would be a refuge for her. Now I had to prove that the promise was more than words.

“Fernanda, put that folder on the table.”

“Why?”

“Because the police are coming now.”

Alejandro began to turn pale.

“The police?”

At that moment the doorbell rang. Fernanda pointed toward the folder, but the door was already opening. A woman stood on the threshold, holding a small bag, and at the sight of her Alejandro covered his face with his hands…

Nadia stood in the doorway, an employee of the city’s social protection service. Behind her stood a police officer and a woman lawyer. Fernanda stepped back, but Nadia calmly showed a document.

“We received a report concerning Rosario Mendoza’s safety. Mrs. Lucía, may we speak?”

“Yes. Everything is here.”

I placed photographs of my mother’s bruises, the sheet of duties, and the account statements on the table. But Fernanda was already shouting.

“This woman forced her way into the house! She has not lived here for years!”

The lawyer opened the folder.

“That is exactly why you need to see this.”

Fernanda snatched the papers from her hand and ran her eyes over them. Then her expression changed.

“This is impossible.”

“What is it?” Alejandro asked.

The lawyer showed the first document to all of us.

“The deed to the house. The owner is Lucía Mendoza. Mrs. Rosario has the right to use it for the rest of her life. Neither you nor your wife have the right to live here, rent it out, or evict anyone.”

Imelda tried to get up from the bed.

“Fernanda, you told me the house belonged to Alejandro.”

“I… was simply managing everything.”

!!!  PARTE 4 — Meu filho me excluiu de um jantar de família, mas quando bloqueei o cartão usado por eles, o sorriso da minha nora desapareceu

“You kept my mother in the laundry room,” I said.

Nadia gently took my mother’s hand.

“Mrs. Rosario, do you want to stay here?”

For the first time my mother looked up at me.

“I want to be with my daughter.”

The officer picked up the account statements.

“Were these transfers made with your consent?”

My mother shook her head.

“They told me I had to sign. I could not read well… and I was afraid.”

Alejandro struck the chair.

“Mom, we were doing everything for you!”

“No,” she said. Her voice was weak, but it reached everyone in the room. “You were doing everything to me.”

Fernanda glared at me.

“You will regret this. You do not know whom you are opposing.”

The lawyer took out a second sheet.

“First you need to know this. Three months ago Lucía requested a financial audit and protective measures. There is also camera footage in which the blow can be clearly seen.”

Fernanda’s lips froze.

At that moment a call came to my phone from an unknown number. I answered.

“Mrs. Mendoza?” I heard a man’s voice. “Your brother is withdrawing a large amount of money from the bank this morning. But that is not the worst news. He has presented another document in your name…”
