On the fifth day after the wedding, my sister-in-law injured my hand with a fork, but after my response one person at the table lost his composure

On the fifth day after the wedding, my husband’s sister struck my hand with a fork, while my mother-in-law calmly told me that in this family the daughter-in-law ate last.

“Here the daughter-in-law learns obedience,” Teresa said and transferred the largest shrimp onto her plate.

I was still looking at the red mark that was slowly appearing on the back of my hand. The smell of garlic, warm tortillas, and fried seafood stood in the dining room. The city’s midday noise came in through the window, but such silence settled at the table as if everyone already knew what was supposed to happen.

“You are new here,” Renata dropped her fork onto the plate. “The food belongs to the elders first.”

“Then why did you take the second-largest shrimp for yourself?” I asked.

Renata’s smile disappeared, but Teresa immediately laughed.

“Do not look for an argument where there are family rules.”

Alejandro was sitting beside me. He saw everything. Under the table he squeezed my arm.

“Mariana, please, do not make a scene.”

Those words turned out to be more painful than the fork.

As if nothing had happened, Teresa began listing the new rules. At Christmas and New Year, the women had to prepare everything. I would have to care for the elderly parents. Taking them to the doctor, shopping, cleaning the house—everything would be my duty. And Renata, whenever she wanted, would stay in our home, because “her brother’s house was also her house.”

“And Alejandro’s salary is managed by Mother,” Renata added. “Now you must hand over your money too. You are husband and wife.”

I laughed loudly.

I had worked as a financial adviser for eight years. I had my own fully paid apartment in Polanco. Alejandro had paid the last installment on his car only seven months earlier.

“Do you agree too?” I asked him.

He looked down at his glass.

“Mother simply thinks that way.”

“I asked for your opinion.”

Renata clicked her tongue.

“If you want to be part of this family, you must learn to give things up.”

I picked up the fork lying on the table, then stood up and slapped Renata.

Everyone in the room held their breath.

“Mariana!” Alejandro shouted and grabbed me by the shoulder. “You went too far!”

“She struck me with a fork. And I was supposed to smile?”

“She only touched you.”

“You saw everything.”

Alejandro lowered his eyes.

I took my bag and looked directly at Teresa.

“Marrying your son did not make me your family’s servant. My salary is not yours. My apartment is not yours. And if your daughter touches me one more time, I will call the police.”

Alejandro followed me into the courtyard. On the sun-heated pavement, the sound of car tires could be heard.

“Come back and apologize first,” he told me. “Then I will ask Renata to apologize too.”

“Why should I apologize first?”

“Because you are the wife. You should be wiser.”

For several seconds I looked at him silently.

“In your family, does ‘wife’ mean a person who must endure everything?”

He did not answer me. I called a taxi and returned home alone.

The next morning a voice message from Teresa arrived.

“Mariana, I do not want any more fighting. From this month, most of your and Alejandro’s salaries must be transferred to my account. I will take care of both your money. This will be better for everyone.”

I played the message in front of Alejandro.

He listened to it until the end and shrugged.

“It is a generational thing.”

“No, it is a matter of control.”

“Do not turn everything into a war.”

At that very moment the doorbell rang. I was standing in the hallway, and the same red mark was still visible on my hand. I looked at the camera screen and my blood froze.

Teresa and Renata stood at the door with two enormous suitcases. Renata was holding the spare key to my apartment, while Teresa was already opening a folder with some document…

I opened the door only with the chain on.

“Why are you here?” I asked.

“We have been waiting for you for almost two hours,” Teresa said angrily. “Renata will live with you temporarily.”

“No.”

Renata rolled her eyes.

“My lease is ending. I have a job on the reform. The guest room is empty.”

“My apartment is not a hotel.”

Teresa hugged the folder to her chest.

“Your apartment? Do you call this Alejandro’s house too?”

“Legally, yes. It is my apartment.”

We tried to enter, but I stood in their way. Then Renata raised the key.

“I already have this.”

I immediately locked the door.

In the evening I asked Alejandro why his sister had a key.

“She took it herself. Nothing happened.”

“She took the key to enter my home without permission.”

“Do not exaggerate.”

That same night I canceled all the old codes and installed a biometric lock. When Alejandro returned, he could not open the door.

“I live here!” he shouted.

“That is why you have a new code. Your sister no longer has one.”

His silence was heavier than an answer.

Two days later I met my friend Fernanda, who worked in family law. She read my marriage contract, the apartment documents, and Teresa’s message. Then her expression changed.

“Mariana, something was registered in your name during the last week.”

“What?”

Fernanda turned the phone toward me.

“You are going to the notary’s office in the morning. And do not go there alone…”

For several seconds after Fernanda’s words I could not move. In the café, a coffee spoon touched a saucer, but to me the sound came from far away.

“What was registered?” I barely asked.

“An application for security over real estate. Your apartment is listed as collateral for a loan.”

“I did not sign anything.”

“That is exactly why we must go to the notary.”

The next morning, at ten past nine, we entered the notary’s office in Polanco. There were leather chairs, a heavy wooden desk, and a strong smell of ink in the room. The notary, Mr. Salgando, first looked at Alejandro, who was already waiting for us there, and then at Fernanda.

“This is a family matter,” Alejandro said. “Fernanda is not necessary.”

“On the contrary, now she is needed more than anyone,” I answered.

The notary opened the folder and placed one sheet of paper on the desk.

“It says here that Mrs. Mariana Moreno agreed to pledge the apartment for a loan in the amount of four hundred and fifty thousand pesos.”

My name was written on the paper. The signature also looked like mine.

But I had never written it.

“It is forged,” I said.

Alejandro immediately stood up.

“We were helping Mother. It is a temporary loan.”

“‘We’ were helping? I knew nothing.”

“You would have signed anyway; the family is in trouble.”

“What trouble?”

Fernanda examined the lower corner of the document.

“Who is the borrower?”

Salgando cleared his throat.

“A company registered to Mrs. Teresa Alvarez.”

The door to the room opened. Teresa and Renata entered, and Bruno followed behind them. Teresa no longer had that calm smile on her face.

“Mariana, do not cause a scandal,” she said. “Family members help one another this way.”

“With a forged signature?”

Renata chuckled.

“You yourself promised us that you would not create a problem.”

“When?”

Renata fell silent.

Fernanda took a small device out of her bag.

“Bruno called me yesterday. He told me that they had prepared the whole plan. I recorded the conversation because he was acting as an informant.”

Alejandro’s face went pale.

We played the recording.

Bruno’s voice sounded: “If we put Mariana’s apartment up as collateral, we would cover the debt. Alejandro said that after the wedding she would no longer resist us. If she suspected anything, we would manage everything before the divorce.”

Then Renata’s voice: “First we will have the money transferred. Then I will take the key. If she refuses, we will say that she is aggressive and is destroying the family.”

The recording stopped.

I looked at Alejandro.

“Did you know all this?”

He moved his lips, but could not say a word.

“Did you arrange the marriage with me so you could use my apartment?”

“It was not like that at first,” he whispered.

“But in the end it became like that.”

Salgando took the document back.

“I am suspending the application. I am also obliged to notify the relevant authorities about the possible forgery.”

Teresa struck the table with her hand.

“You have destroyed my family!”

“No,” I told her. “You built everything yourselves on lies.”

As we came outside, my phone rang. It was an employee of the bank.

“Mrs. Moreno, the loan amount has already been sent against your apartment. If you do not stop the transfer today, the money may no longer be recoverable.”

Fernanda immediately looked at me.

“Mariana, we have to go home. If the money is already moving, this matter no longer depends only on documents.”

At that moment I did not yet know that there was another file on Alejandro’s phone—a video that made everything more dangerous…
