Part 4 — My mother-in-law brought twenty-nine guests to my restaurant and ordered everyone to choose the most expensive dishes, but she turned pale when she saw the bill

For several seconds after Beatrice’s scream, nobody moved.

Elena slowly unfolded the sheet.

My signature was visible on the paper, and below it was written as if I had transferred half of “Lumina” to Lucas.

I looked at that signature and immediately understood — it was not my handwriting. The letters resembled mine, but in the final line there was an extra curve. Only someone who had looked at their own signature a thousand times over the years would notice that small difference.

“It is forged,” I said.

“She gave it to me herself,” Lucas shouted. “She told me she had signed!”

“I never gave you such a document.”

“You simply do not remember anymore.”

Elena put the sheet into the folder.

“That is exactly what the examination will check. And one more thing.”

She turned on an audio recording on her phone.

Lucas’s voice sounded, this time more clearly.

“If Camila resists us, we will say that she signed herself. Mother, you will be the witness.”

Then Beatrice’s whisper came:

“And if they do not believe us?”

“Then we will say that she is psychologically unwell.”

The recording ended.

Lucas collapsed into the chair.

For the first time I saw his face as it really was — not that of a confident husband, but of a frightened person.

“How did you do this?” he asked me.

“I worked in the kitchen, but I was never deaf.”

Beatrice clasped her hands.

“Camila, we only wanted to get the money back. Lucas had debts. That girl… everything is her fault.”

“No,” I told her. “You both chose.”

At that moment the restaurant’s entrance door opened. Two investigators came in. Behind them stood a representative of the bank’s security service.

Lucas stood up.

“I am not going anywhere.”

“Nobody is asking you to go on your own feet,” one of the investigators answered.

Beatrice moved toward me.

“Are you taking my son to prison?”

“I am not taking him. His decisions are taking him.”

Lucas extended his hand to me.

“Camila, give me one chance. I will return everything.”

I looked at his hand. It was the same hand that for years had lain on my kitchen counter and asked for money.

“You have already returned the most valuable thing to me.”

“What?”

“My peace.”

The investigators took him away. Beatrice remained in the hall, in front of thirty-eight friends to whom she had recently promised that I would pay for everything.

Gavin slowly took out the bill.

“Ladies, your total bill is twenty-one thousand four hundred ninety dollars.”

One woman opened her bag.

“Beatrice said that she was paying herself.”

“I thought the same,” Beatrice answered.

At the end of the evening every woman paid her own share. Beatrice did too. When the door closed behind her, the smell of her expensive perfume was still floating in the air.

I was left alone in the private hall.

There was one napkin on the table, with a trace of red lipstick on it. Next to it I found my copper key — I had been squeezing it throughout the whole evening so that deep impressions of my fingers remained on it.

When I arrived home that night, Lucas’s closet was empty. He had taken several things in advance. On the bedroom wall hung a photograph from our wedding.

I did not take the photograph down.

My daughter Sofia stood in front of it and looked at the frame.

“Mom, is Dad not coming home anymore?”

I knelt beside her.

“No, darling.”

“Where will he go?”

“Where he will receive the answers to his decisions.”

Sofia rested her head on my shoulder.

“Are you sad?”

“A little.”

“Will it pass later?”

“Little by little.”

She took my hand and looked at my fingers.

“Why do you always have this key?”

I looked at the small copper key.

“Because once I was very afraid that I would lose everything.”

“Now?”

“Now I know that no one can take away what is mine.”

Three weeks later “Lumina” opened again.

At six in the morning on the first day, I entered the kitchen. The ovens were warming, the knives were arranged in their places, and Gavin was struggling with the coffee machine.

“You still do not have sugar?” I asked.

“I have sugar. Your new menu is simply afraid of it.”

For the first time in a long while, I laughed.

We changed the accounting system, gave every employee their own access, and hung a small sign by the door: “Large groups without a reservation are accepted only with advance payment.”

Sofia came to the restaurant every evening. She sat by the window and drew with colored pencils. One day she brought me a drawing.

On it was a large golden building, and above it was written: “Mom’s place.”

“Is this the restaurant?” I asked.

“No,” she answered. “This is the place where no one will hurt you anymore.”

Five months later the first snow came. It was rare in San Diego, so Sofia stood by the window and counted each flake.

Just then the phone rang.

It was Lucas.

I did not answer.

He called a second time.

The third time he sent only a message: “I want to talk to you. I understand everything. Can we start over?”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote: “You want to start over. But I have already started.”

The answer came immediately.

“I love you.”

My finger stopped on the screen.

Once these words made my whole day lighter. Now they only made me feel tired.

I turned off the phone.

The next day the lawyer called me and said that Lucas was confessing to the crime. Beatrice also had to give testimony. I felt no desire for revenge against either of them.

!!!  Meine Schwester befahl mir, meine Nichte sofort zurückzubringen, doch als ich ihre Nachricht las, hörte sie plötzlich auf zu lächeln

I simply no longer wanted to save them.

I no longer wanted to carry their debts, lies, and shame.

That evening I had Sofia draw the new cover of the menu. She drew a small copper key on it.

“Why this?” I asked.

“Because now you open the door yourself.”

When I locked the restaurant, I turned the key in the lock. The first snow was falling slowly in the street, warm light was coming from the windows, while the smell of rosemary still remained in the kitchen.

I put the key into my pocket.

This time my hand was no longer trembling.

I locked the door and went home.

My life was mine again.

Missed the beginning?
