My mother-in-law brought twenty-nine guests to my restaurant and ordered everyone to choose the most expensive dishes, but she turned pale when she saw the bill

The very moment Beatrice opened the restaurant door for thirty-eight friends, I realized that this time her humiliation was no longer accidental — she was finally destroying my life.

It was Friday, one thirty in the afternoon. The hall of “Lumina,” located in downtown San Diego, was full, the smell of butter and rosemary was coming from the ovens, when Beatrice loudly announced:

“Come in, ladies! Do not be shy! This is my daughter-in-law’s restaurant. Today we eat like queens. I am paying for everything!”

Thirty-eight women came in behind her — with expensive bags, strong perfumes, and the confidence of people who know in advance that the bill will be left to someone else.

My manager, Gavin, quickly approached me. He was holding a crumpled reservation sheet.

“Camila, they do not have a reservation. All the tables are occupied. Shall I tell them that we cannot accept them?”

Beatrice was already going toward the private hall and trying to remove the sign hanging on the reserved table.

“No,” I told him. “Accept them all.”

Gavin widened his eyes.

“All thirty-nine?”

“Everyone. And serve them exactly what they ask for.”

There was calmness in my voice, but I was squeezing the small copper key in my apron pocket so hard that its edges were digging into my skin.

This key belonged to the restaurant’s first cash register. Six years earlier, when “Lumina” was only an empty space, I kept my first earnings in that very register. I saved every dollar. I chose the ovens, I created the menu, I spent nights in the kitchen.

Lucas did not put in a single dollar.

But Beatrice told everyone:

“My son gave Camila this business. She only cooks.”

For years she would arrive unexpectedly, demand the best meats, seafood, and expensive wine, and leave as if paying was her birthright.

When I protested, Lucas shrugged.

“She is my mother. Do not destroy the family over a few thousand dollars.”

That day Beatrice looked directly toward the kitchen.

“The most expensive tasting menu for everyone! Open the bottles kept in the cellar. I want nothing cheap!”

The women applauded.

“How generous you are, Beatrice!”

“When you have your own restaurant in the family, you must be able to afford this,” she said and looked at me.

The first dishes went out soon: oysters, tuna tartare, handmade bread, meat fillets, and sauces placed on white porcelain. When I brought the bottle of the most expensive wine, Beatrice chuckled.

“Look, the great chef is serving the table too.”

The women laughed.

“She cooks well,” one said. “She just looks very ordinary.”

Beatrice raised her glass.

“Camila is excellent for work. Exactly this is what you need such a wife for.”

Then one woman asked:

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Am fost adusă la fermă ca să îngrijesc găinile, dar când am deschis registrul, zâmbetul celui mai bogat om a dispărut

“Where is Lucas? We have not seen him for a long time.”

Beatrice lowered her voice, as if revealing a great secret to us.

“My son is living wonderfully. He has a young and beautiful girl who is crazy about him.”

Something broke inside my heart, but I left only a smile on my face.

“Do not look at me like that,” she burst out laughing. “Camila is never at home. She has spent her whole life in this kitchen. Lucas should have fun too.”

“And who is paying for this?” another woman asked.

Beatrice raised her glass again.

“Who else but this restaurant. In the end, everything remains in the family.”

For three months I had been investigating Lucas’s strange expenses: hotels, gifts, transfers, and debts that he could not explain to me. Now everything fell into place in one sentence.

Beatrice knew about his betrayal. More than that — she knew that the money spent on that woman was coming from my restaurant.

I found Gavin by the kitchen door.

“Are we still continuing?”

“Serve everything,” I told him. “To the end.”

At six in the evening Beatrice dropped the napkin on the table and wiped her fingers.

“Camila, bring the bill. I want to show the girls what a generous family we have.”

Gavin picked up the folder. I took the copper key out of my apron and went toward the back door, where I kept the documents hidden for six months.

Beatrice was laughing.

I already knew that her smile would not last long.

I reached toward the folder’s lock, and at that very moment the back-door handle went down…

The handle went down and Lucas entered the room. He held a phone in his hand, and his face had such confidence, as if every table here belonged to him.

“Mother, is everything ready?” he asked.

“We are waiting for the bill,” Beatrice answered. “Your wife is being extraordinarily hospitable toward us today.”

Lucas looked toward me.

“Camila, just pay and do not complicate things.”

Gavin quietly asked me:

“Should I stop the service now?”

“No,” I told him. “Not yet.”

Lucas became irritated.

“What does ‘not yet’ mean?”

“It means that this time we will bring the bill according to the rules.”

Beatrice laughed.

“Do not play boss, girl. This business belongs to my son.”

I did not answer. I turned the copper key in my hand and opened the folder. On it lay three months of statements, copies of audio recordings, and one signed document.

Lucas did not have time to see them. An unfamiliar woman appeared at the door — in a black coat and with a small leather bag.

“Mrs. Camila, are you ready?” she asked me.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Als mein Mann mich für abhängig hielt, legte ich den Ehering auf sein Kissen – und sein Gesicht verlor jede Farbe

Lucas’s face changed.

“Who are you?”

The woman took a white folder from her bag.

“A lawyer. And this is only the first copy…”

At that moment Beatrice’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and suddenly lost her color…

Beatrice’s phone fell from her hand and hit the wooden floor noisily. Only one word was visible on the screen: “Bank.”

The woman in the black coat turned toward me.

“Mrs. Camila, I am Elena Moreno. Your lawyer. And now, if you allow me, we will finally call all this by its name.”

Lucas raised his voice.

“Nobody gave permission here to interfere in my family matter.”

“This is no longer a family matter,” Elena answered calmly. “This is appropriation of company property, concealment of false expenses, and illegal access to bank accounts.”

Beatrice collapsed into the chair. Her fingers were gripping the pearl necklace so tightly that several pearls were knocking against one another.

“What are you talking about?” she muttered.

I put the folder on the table.

“During the last three months Lucas transferred more than one hundred thousand from my account. To hotels, gifts, car rental, and one woman whose name is repeated on every payment.”

Lucas shook his head.

“This is a lie. I have the right to manage the business.”

“No,” I told him. “You are only my husband. And I am the owner of the company.”

Elena took out the document.

“‘Lumina’ has been entirely owned by Camila Alvarez since the day it was founded. Its capital was created by her personal savings. Lucas has neither a share, nor director’s authority, nor the right to sign on the accounts.”

Noise came from the hall. Beatrice’s friends had gathered at the door and everyone could hear.

“But his signature is at the bank!” Beatrice shouted.

“That is exactly the problem,” Elena answered. “The signature is forged.”

Lucas took a step toward me.

“Camila, please do not sacrifice the family over this.”

“I am not sacrificing the family,” I told him. “You were sacrificing money.”

Gavin quietly turned on a small voice recorder that had been lying by the kitchen door all evening. Beatrice’s own voice sounded in the room:

“Buy that bracelet with Camila’s money. If she asks anything, tell her it was advertising for the restaurant.”

Then Lucas’s voice came:

“Do not worry, Mom. As long as she is in the kitchen, she will not find out anything.”

Silence fell over the room.

!!!  Mi suegro se acostó entre nosotros durante la noche de bodas y, cuando encendí la luz, mi esposo dejó de sonreír

Lucas was staring at the recording, as if he were hearing these words for the first time.

“This… this is taken out of context.”

“It is your voice,” I told him. “Your words.”

Beatrice covered her face with both hands.

“Camila, we were only joking.”

“Humiliating me in front of thirty-nine people is not a joke.”

Elena opened the second folder.

“Here is the complete bank audit, camera recordings, and comparison of deposits. Tomorrow morning the materials will be handed over to the police and the tax service.”

Lucas suddenly took a phone from his pocket.

“Then I also have something to say. Do you not know that this restaurant building is rented? If I leave, the owner will close everything.”

For the first time I became afraid. This was the only thing that could possibly remain in his hands.

But Elena smiled calmly.

“You still did not understand. You have already left this building. Camila renewed the contract three days ago in her own name.”

The phone fell from Lucas’s hand.

At that moment Elena’s phone rang. She listened, her eyes changed, and she looked toward me.

“Camila, that call was from the prosecutor’s office. They said the case is not only about stealing money. Lucas submitted one more document — one whose existence we did not know about…”

Elena reached for the lower pocket of the folder. Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

When she saw the seal, Beatrice let out such a scream that the entire hall fell silent…
