Part 4 — My husband secretly moved his mother into my home, but after one question from me, his face suddenly turned pale

Artyom was standing at the door and could no longer breathe.

Valentina sank into a chair. Her fingers clutched the blue bowl lying on the table, as if this small thing were still on her side.

“This is impossible,” she whispered.

The policeman took out a document.

“Your partner states that you devised the plan to obtain the money. According to him, the apartment was to be sold, and the debt was to be used to save your son’s business.”

Artyom slowly raised his head.

“Mother… you told me that everything was legal.”

Valentina looked at him.

“You asked me for help yourself.”

“I asked for help, not for my wife to be robbed!”

That word fell heavily into the room.

For the first time I saw how the invisible connection between them, which I had thought was stronger than me for years, collapsed.

The phone rang.

Artyom answered.

“Yes?”

He listened to his lawyer. His face slowly changed.

“But you told me you would come today… no, I will not sign… I cannot stay alone…”

He held the phone to his ear and left the room.

A few seconds later his voice was heard from the corridor.

“You are abandoning me too?”

The answer was so clear that we heard it as well.

“I cannot protect you. The video recording, bank documents, and signature examination are enough. I am withdrawing from the case.”

Artyom lowered the phone.

For him, this was the first real abandonment.

All his life he had convinced others that only circumstances forced him to lie. Now even the person who defended him for money had backed away.

The policeman put the recorder on the table.

“There is one more procedure. You must listen to the recording in full.”

Artyom sat down.

The recorder was turned on.

At first Valentina’s voice was heard.

“Larisa will sign. If not, we will tell the police that she attacked Artyom. No one believes women like that.”

Then Artyom’s voice sounded.

“I just don’t want her to go to prison.”

“Then act together with me.”

“And what if she finds out?”

“She won’t find out. She will be with us for two months, I will sleep in her room, and I will show everyone that everything is in order at home.”

The recording ended.

Artyom sat for a long time.

His own words now sounded in the room like the voice of a stranger.

“Did I say this?” he asked.

“Yes,” the policeman answered.

Valentina lowered her head.

I said nothing.

Silence answered in my place.

That same day Artyom and Valentina were taken to the station for questioning. They were still trying to blame each other, but their versions fell apart with every new question.

Accompanied by a lawyer, I went to the bank. The examination confirmed that the signature was forged. The loan application was canceled, the account was frozen, and the restriction placed on my apartment was removed.

But the hardest thing happened that evening.

I entered the bedroom and opened the door.

My bed was disheveled. The wardrobe door had been left open. In front of the mirror lay the key holder in the shape of a small wooden house.

The one Valentina had found in the wardrobe.

She no longer had the keys.

Only this small house had remained on the floor, with a black scratch on its back.

I picked it up and closed it in my palm.

That night I slept for the first time without hearing the breathing of a stranger beyond the door.

Three weeks later the court granted Artyom release on bail. The investigation into Valentina continued separately, because it turned out that she had tried a similar scheme twice before with relatives.

Artyom called me every day.

In the first days he was angry.

“You could have simply signed.”

Then he cried.

!!!  Mi revocarono l’accesso davanti a tutti, ma quando il nuovo responsabile premette un solo tasto, il direttore smise di sorridere

“Mother drove me crazy. I was not going to lose you.”

In the end he repeated only the same thing.

“Larisa, bring me home.”

I did not shout at him even once.

Nor did I insult him.

I simply told him:

“Go back to the home you chose yourself.”

Two months later I completely renovated the apartment. A dark stain had remained on the wall where the suitcases had stood. The repairman told me he would repaint it, but I did not touch it for a week.

This stain reminded me how easily you can become a guest in your own home if you do not defend your own voice in time.

In autumn I moved to a new job. I began working at an accounting company where people’s signatures and accounts were checked. On the very first day my boss told me:

“You are very observant.”

I smiled.

“I was forced to become this way.”

The first snow came in December.

I placed a small table by the window. In the mornings I drank coffee and watched people walking in the street. I still had my grandmother’s blue bowl at home, but now it held only lemon slices.

One evening I received a letter from Artyom.

“I am not asking you to forget me. Just meet me once. Mother is ill and asks about you.”

I held the letter in my hand for a long time.

Then I wrote a reply.

“She has doctors. And you have the opportunity to take responsibility for your own decisions. I will no longer help you feel innocent.”

I sent the letter and turned off the phone.

That night I began tidying the pantry. In an old box I found the small wooden house that I had picked up from the floor that morning.

The black scratch was still visible on its back.

I put the key into it and hung it on the wall.

Now it was no longer a sign of someone else’s entry.

!!!  Part 4 — When I was leaving the airport with my children, a gray jeep followed us, and when my ex-husband saw it, the color drained from his face

It was the key to my home.

And for the first time it truly belonged to me.

Missed the beginning?
