My Date Humiliated Me in Eleven Minutes, but When the Waiter Left Me One Small Note, His Face Suddenly Turned Pale

That evening, everyone in the restaurant applauded the birthday cake, while I sat at my table and tried not to let my tears fall into my wine glass.

Eleven minutes had passed when Adrian Salas pushed his chair back.

“I don’t want this to sound rude,” he told me, closing the menu as if an unpleasant smell were coming from it.

I placed my hands on my knees. The fabric of the green dress folded beneath my fingers.

“But?”

Adrian first looked at the door, then at me.

“You looked different in your photos.”

“Different how?”

He sighed.

“I imagined you thinner.”

The noise of the restaurant suddenly receded into the distance. I could see only the small flame of the candle trembling on the surface of the mirror.

“You have been sitting with me for eleven minutes,” I said.

“I know.”

“You haven’t asked me anything.”

“I know that you are a kindergarten teacher. My sister told me.”

“What else did she tell you?”

“That you are a good woman. But attraction matters too.”

He said these words calmly. That was exactly why they hurt me even more.

Adrian took a bill from his wallet and placed it beside the bread basket. We had touched neither the bread nor the menu.

“You have quite a beautiful face,” he added, as if he were comforting me.

I smiled at him. It was such a calm smile that even he became confused.

“You could simply have left. I didn’t need a reward in the form of a compliment.”

Adrian’s lips froze.

“Good night, Clara.”

“The door is on the left.”

He left.

I looked at the candle and thought about how many things I had been able to endure. My father’s death. University debt. A broken engagement. A fire that started in the apartment. Seven years with children who used pencils as weapons and turned cardboard boxes into rescue operations.

I knew how to solve problems.

But that night I could not defend myself.

A waiter named Mateo came quietly and picked up the empty glass from the table.

“You didn’t order dessert,” he told me.

“Thank you, I don’t want any more.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

He put down a small plate. On it lay warm apple cake, and beside it a cinnamon stick that smelled like my childhood home.

“The restaurant is not giving it to you,” Mateo told me quietly. “I am giving it to you.”

“Why?”

He shrugged.

“Because your date has left, but you are still here.”

For the first time that evening, I laughed.

!!!  Mio marito mi colpì davanti alla sua amante e mi consegnò il divorzio, ma alla mia telefonata il suo sorriso scomparve

Mateo hid a small folded piece of paper beneath the plate.

“What is this?”

“It is my son’s drawing. He brought it from school today. He told me that someone who is sad should be drawn a sunny window.”

I opened the paper. A crooked yellow sun, four raindrops, and a small house had been drawn.

On the other side, in Mateo’s handwriting, it said: “Do not believe a person who saw only your body.”

I put the paper in my bag and left the restaurant.

On Monday, at seven forty in the morning, the kindergarten director, Livia Salas, summoned me to her office. She was Adrian’s sister.

My file lay on the desk.

“Clara, a parent has filed a complaint,” she told me.

“About what?”

“That you shout at the children and leave them alone.”

“That is a lie.”

Livia looked away.

“You have to leave today.”

“After seven years of work, in one morning?”

“Sometimes one complaint is enough.”

At the corner of the file I noticed a red mark. It was exactly like the one left by the stamp we used in our preschool room.

Then I understood that this was not accidental.

And when I reached toward the file, I heard Adrian’s voice from outside the door…

The door opened and Adrian entered. He was holding a black leather folder.

“You’re here?” he asked, as if my dismissal were news to him.

“You knew about this?”

“Livia is the director. I decide nothing here.”

“Then why did you come?”

Adrian shifted his gaze to the file.

“Sometimes a person has to know when to stop fighting.”

His calm voice said more than the words.

Livia took my locker key.

“Your things have already been packed.”

“No one has the right to enter my locker.”

“Now someone does,” Adrian said.

The children’s laughter could be heard in the corridor. Just then I remembered Mateo’s paper and grasped my bag.

Inside, together with the drawing, there was a small note. On the back I noticed a new sentence: “If you do not trust these people, come to the old cinema in the evening. I have the camera recording.”

Mateo’s number was written there.

At six in the evening I went to the back courtyard of the cinema. Mateo was standing by the wall, holding a memory card in his hand.

!!!  PARTE 4 — Meus pais apareceram depois de anos, exigiram dinheiro e, quando recusei, meu pai ficou imóvel diante da minha resposta

“Did Adrian give this to you?” I asked.

“No. He did not realize that the camera was working.”

“What did you record?”

Mateo placed the card in my palm.

“Livia was not acting alone. But at the end of the recording someone closed the door and said your name. I do not yet know who this man is…”

Then the telephone rang. Adrian’s number was glowing on the screen.

His first words turned out to be more frightening than the dismissal letter…

I did not answer Adrian’s call. Mateo took the phone from my hand and quietly turned on the recording.

A voice message arrived a few seconds later.

“Clara, if you show this card to anyone, you will lose everything. The apartment, the job, and even what you do not yet know about. Come to my office tomorrow morning.”

Mateo clenched his jaw.

“He is sure that he will frighten you.”

“Until now, he has succeeded.”

The next day, Tuesday, at nine in the morning, I went to the office of the Salas company. The sound of my shoes on the marble floor was excessively loud. Livia was there too. Beside her sat a lawyer, Raul Mendoza.

Adrian did not even look at me.

“Put the card on the table.”

“First tell me why you dismissed me.”

Livia clasped her hands together.

“A parent’s complaint existed.”

“Which parent’s?”

Raul opened a folder.

“This information is confidential.”

I inserted Mateo’s card into the computer. The kindergarten corridor from Sunday evening appeared on the video. The time could be seen in the corner of the screen: twenty-one hours and fourteen minutes. Livia was standing in front of the locker and replacing papers in my file.

Then Adrian entered.

“Blame Clara,” he said.

“What if she notices me?”

“The complaint has already been signed. Tomorrow her place will be empty.”

Livia asked:

“And what if she goes to the police?”

Adrian laughed.

“Who will believe a woman who has lost her job and lives alone?”

Silence fell in the room.

I could no longer recognize my own voice.

“You saw my report about the children’s safety,” I said.

For the first time Adrian looked up at me.

“No one will see that report.”

“They will. Because I have a copy somewhere else too.”

The color drained from Livia’s face.

In the second part of the video, one more thing appeared: Livia was hiding sedative medicine for several children in a small box. She did this when the group became too noisy. I had noticed it a month ago and written an official report.

!!!  Part 4 — The husband called our marriage only a deal, but during our honeymoon one question from me erased the smile from his face

Adrian struck the table with his hand.

“You do not know what you are doing!”

“I know exactly. You were putting the children to sleep so that you could save on employees.”

Raul pushed his chair back.

“I will no longer sign anything at this meeting. This is already a criminal case.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You are my lawyer.”

“As of today, I am not.”

At that moment Mateo knocked on the door and entered the room. Two police officers stood behind him.

I thought everything was over.

But the police officer handed me only one sheet of paper.

It said that one of the kindergarten children had disappeared the previous night, while his mother was waiting at the police station to testify against Adrian.

Adrian read the paper and suddenly smiled.

“You do not understand,” he said quietly, “who you are standing against.”

The telephone rang again. This time the call came to Livia.

She listened, and her face completely collapsed.

“What happened?” I asked.

Livia looked toward me.

“The child’s mother said that you took her son…”

And just then a familiar small voice sounded behind the office door…
