On my wedding day, they refused to let me marry my fiancé, mentioned an unknown contract, and when another man stood before me, my mother turned pale

On the day of my wedding, I went to the altar and found his older brother there instead of my fiancé, and then I realized that everyone in the hall knew everything except me.

I was looking for Nathan. I held the edge of the white veil between my fingers, while the small wedding bag given to me by my mother hung from my wrist. A swallow was engraved on its silver clasp — Mother said that it meant returning toward happiness.

But thirty-nine-year-old Adrian stood before me. He had a black cane leaning beside his right leg, and an old scar ran beneath his jaw.

“Where is Nathan?” I asked.

No one breathed.

My father looked at the floor. My mother covered her lips with her hand. The guests stood as though they were at a funeral and not at a wedding.

Adrian answered me calmly:

“Downstairs.”

“Then why are you standing before me?”

He did not answer me.

I removed my veil and ran toward the stairs. Nearly two hundred people stood in the Veil family’s enormous estate in the suburbs of Chicago — judges, politicians, businessmen, and people whose names were spoken only behind closed doors.

I found Nathan at the bar. I had loved him for eight months. He knew that I hated cilantro, and when my car broke down at night, he walked for an hour and a half to come to me. A week ago he whispered into my ear:

“After the wedding, we will start everything over.”

Now he held a glass in his hand and could not meet my eyes.

“Why did I discover that I am marrying your brother?” I asked.

“Claire…”

“Answer me.”

Nathan tightened his jaw.

“I thought they would explain it to you.”

I laughed, because if I did not laugh, I would scream in front of everyone.

“What were they supposed to explain?”

He said quietly:

“I met you because of Adrian.”

The floor disappeared beneath my feet.

“What does that mean?”

“He needed a wife.”

“And you found him a candidate?”

“It was not that simple.”

“Kiss me.”

Silence.

“You told me that you loved me. You talked to me about children. You drew me a house where we would live together.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

“Everything became complicated.”

Those words collided with me like a knife in my stomach.

“Was I the complication?”

At that moment Adrian appeared at the bottom of the stairs. The conversations immediately stopped. The men made way for him. He never needed to raise his voice.

Nathan whispered:

“Years ago he saved my life.”

I looked at Adrian.

“And this is how you repay him?”

Again, no one had an answer.

!!!  La optsprezece ani am fost lăsată pe un drum din Asturias, iar când mama a văzut cabana, a încetat să zâmbească

Then my mother admitted that my brother had needed two operations after the accident and that the Veil family had paid the bills.

“How much?” I asked.

My mother wiped away her tears.

“We had no other way.”

“How much did they pay you?”

When she told me the amount, I let go of her hand.

“Then you sold me.”

“No, child!”

“What else should I call this?”

In the evening, when I went upstairs to the room alone, Adrian entered with a tray full of food. When he opened his jacket, I flinched. He saw this and immediately fastened it again.

He placed a key on the table.

“What is this?”

“The room’s. It locks from the inside.”

“Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because today you should have a choice for the first time.”

He told me that if I wanted to leave in the morning, he himself would take me, while the family debt would still remain covered.

“And our marriage?”

“We will annul it.”

“Really?”

Adrian looked directly at me.

“You are not the price of a debt, Claire.”

That night he slept on the sofa. At two in the morning I found his cane fallen on the floor, picked it up, and straightened the blanket over his shoulders. It was the first time I thought that perhaps Nathan had not been the only one to use me.

In the morning Adrian was talking with men in the study. Nathan entered with a suitcase.

“Take care of her,” he told his brother.

Adrian slowly turned his head.

“Never again tell me how to treat a woman whom you betrayed.”

At that moment the lawyer rushed in. He held a red folder in his hand. He put it in front of Adrian and said quietly:

“We have a problem.”

Adrian opened the folder. His face changed. Then he looked at me, brought his hand to the first document, and whispered:

“Claire, behind your back Nathan arranged not only a marriage…”

Adrian’s fingers touched the edge of the folder, but stopped immediately.

“What did he do?” I asked.

The lawyer locked the doors.

“No one can leave here yet,” he said.

Nathan gave a small laugh, although his voice was trembling.

“This is nonsense. Claire has nothing to do with it.”

“That is exactly the problem,” Adrian answered.

Inside the folder was a copy of my identity document, with a signature that was mine and, at the same time, was not. I squeezed the silver swallow clasp in my hand so hard that it cut my skin.

“I did not sign this.”

“I know,” Adrian said.

“Then why did you put me at the altar?”

!!!  Mio fratello mi lasciò con un debito impossibile, ma quando crollai davanti al suo creditore, lui smise di sorridere

For the first time, calm disappeared from his eyes.

“Because before stopping the wedding I had to make sure that you would not end up in prison.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“No one is going to the police.”

“You do not decide that,” Adrian told him.

At that moment my phone rang sharply. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

“Answer it,” the lawyer told me.

“Claire Veil?” a woman’s voice said. “If you want to find out in whose name the account was opened, come to the old station this evening. Alone.”

The call ended.

Adrian grabbed me by the arm.

“You are not going anywhere.”

But I already knew that this story was much bigger than the folder. Someone was waiting for me at the station, and that person had something about me that even Adrian did not know…

In the evening we arrived at the old station, where the wall clock showed fifteen minutes past seven and the rain beat fiercely against the iron roof. Adrian stood beside me, while the lawyer followed us several steps behind.

At the end of the platform a woman met us. She was over fifty, held a brown umbrella in her hand, and her fingers trembled as though she were waiting not for us, but for her own memories.

“I am Marina,” she said. “The Veil family’s former accountant.”

Adrian’s gaze hardened.

“You disappeared ten years ago.”

“I did not disappear. I ran away.”

Marina opened her bag and took out a small memory device.

“Nathan made me sign false accounts. When I refused, he told me that my children would end up on the street.”

The lawyer connected the device to a laptop. At first only static could be heard, then Nathan’s voice sounded.

“Claire must have everything ready on the day of the wedding. I already have her signature.”

My mother’s voice answered with a tremble:

“This is illegal. The girl knows nothing.”

“Whether she knows or not does not matter. The transfer of the debt will be completed after the wedding. If something happens, she will be responsible, not me.”

My breath caught.

Nathan’s voice sounded again:

“Vanessa’s family will give us political protection. Claire, in everyone’s eyes, will be an abandoned woman. People will pity her, but the documents will work against her.”

My mother began to cry.

“You are destroying her.”

“I am saving our family.”

The recording stopped.

For a long time no one spoke. The sound of the rain now seemed to come from somewhere very far away.

“Is this my signature?” I asked.

The lawyer handed me the document.

!!!  Estaba embarazada cuando encontraron a mi esposo con otra mujer, pero al verla en el hospital su voz hizo que yo me desplomara

“The forensic expert checked it. The signature is forged. In addition, a seal was used that could only have been taken from the family’s main office.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“I protected Nathan for years,” he said. “I thought he was trying to save the debt and the family name.”

“You call using me saving?”

“No. I call my own silence a crime.”

Nathan suddenly fell forward toward me.

“Claire, this recording is edited. It was not all like that.”

“It is your voice.”

“You do not know whom you trust.”

His face no longer resembled the man I had loved for eight months. Only fear remained there.

Adrian took out his phone.

“Law enforcement officers are on the way.”

Nathan stepped back.

“You cannot do this.”

“I already did.”

But before the sound of sirens reached us outside, Marina handed me one more sheet.

“I received this this morning. Not from Nathan. Vanessa’s lawyer sent it.”

At the bottom of the sheet it said that if I testified against Nathan, funding for my brother’s treatment would immediately stop. Below, one new address and a deadline were indicated — twenty-four hours.

Adrian read it and his face turned pale.

“This is not a threat, Claire.”

“Then what is it?”

He looked outside, where a black car slowly stopped.

“It means that Nathan was not acting alone. And the people who are now visiting your brother in the hospital may be dependent on Vanessa’s family…”
