My wife was attacked by nine members of her family, and in the hospital corridor her father smiled while my security guard froze on the spot

I was standing at the door of the hospital intensive care unit when Clara’s father looked at his bloodied hands and began to laugh.

It was twelve sixteen at night when they called me. I got into the car, but before starting the engine I listened to the doctor’s voice once more.

“Your wife survived.”

That was all he told me. As if the word “survived” was enough for everything to be all right.

When I arrived at the hospital, I could no longer recognize Clara. Her right eye was bruised, her lip was split, and her shoulder was in a cast in such a way that it seemed no longer to belong to her body. Beside her bed, the monitor drew a green line and beeped thinly with every breath.

Her hand lay on her stomach.

Where our child should have been.

The surgeon led me into the corridor. I noticed a small dark stain on his white coat. I could not ask what it was.

“She has three broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a fractured collarbone,” he said.

“The baby?”

The doctor lowered his eyes.

At that moment, the floor tiles of the hospital seemed to shift beneath my feet.

“I’m sorry. We could not save the baby.”

I placed my hand against the wall. It was cold. So cold that my fingers froze.

“How many people attacked her?”

“At least nine.”

I already knew the names.

Clara’s father, Zurab, and his eight sons had been placing obedience above love for their daughter for years. Our marriage was betrayal to them. Clara had refused to return to their house, obey their rules, and leave me. So they beat her.

But they did not think they would have to be held accountable.

All nine were standing at the end of the corridor. Some had their hands in their pockets, some were looking at their phones. The marks of their heavy boots, stuck to the wall, were still wet.

One of the brothers chuckled.

“You should have treated your wife better, Adrian. Maybe we would not have needed to discipline her.”

“You beat Clara,” I said.

“It was a family matter,” another replied. “You do not count as family.”

Zurab slowly came toward me. A blood-colored trace from Clara was visible on his shirt sleeve.

“You have a lot of money, son-in-law. Do not confuse that with power.”

For six years, that was exactly what I wanted to make them believe. To Clara, I was simply a businessman husband. She knew I had several companies, but she did not know why influential people answered me on the first call. She did not know that the heads of banks, ports, and private security networks were waiting for my decisions.

I hid this world from her to protect her.

That night I understood that silence had not protected Clara.

I took out my phone. For the first time, my hands were not trembling. I typed six words and sent the message.

“Black Protocol. Execute all orders.”

Within seconds, the first phone rang. One brother’s accounts were frozen. Another learned that investigators were entering his office. The third’s largest financier terminated his contract.

Zurab’s phone rang too.

He did not answer. He stared at the screen, and his color slowly changed.

Black cars stopped at the hospital entrance. People dressed in dark suits entered through the doors. The laughter disappeared from the corridor.

“Who are you?” Zurab whispered.

I came one step closer to him.

“The man because of whom no one touched your family for six years.”

At that moment my phone became active again. I was expecting a security report, but a recording from a hospital camera appeared on the screen. Two hours earlier, one of Clara’s brothers had been standing with the traumatologist and handing him a small brown folder.

I paused the video.

The doctor’s name was written on the folder.

I looked toward the intensive care door. The surgeon had told me that Clara was stable.

But now, for the first time, I suspected that the attack had not ended in the yard where Clara was beaten. I reached toward the folder, and just then the corridor door opened…

The door opened and the hospital security chief rushed in. He was holding a small voice recorder.

“Mr. Adrian, we just found this in the doctor’s office.”

“Where is the doctor?”

“He is no longer in the operating room. He left through the back exit.”

Zurab took a step back.

“This is all a conspiracy,” he roared.

I pressed the recorder. At first there was noise, then the doctor’s frightened voice.

“I do not want money. I cannot touch your daughter.”

The second voice was difficult to forget. Zurab’s.

“You will lose your life, not money.”

The recording cut off.

I opened the intensive care door. The monitor on Clara’s wrist showed that her pulse was accelerating. I noticed a hidden needle beside her pillow.

“Nobody come near her!” I shouted.

The security employee opened the folder brought from the doctor’s office. Inside was one sheet of paper, bearing Clara’s hospital stamp.

That paper said that Clara’s condition was hopeless and that her husband had agreed to stop treatment.

My signature was at the bottom.

I had never signed this document.

For the first time, Zurab lost his patience.

“If you publish this, you still will not save Clara.”

The phone rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen.

I answered.

“If you want the truth, look under Clara’s bed for what the doctor could not take…”

The unknown voice on the phone fell silent for several seconds, then told me very quietly:

“On the left side of the bed, under the mattress. Quickly.”

The call ended.

It was one in the morning. Only the beeping of the machines could be heard in Clara’s room. Her face was pale, but her fingers moved slightly when I touched her hand.

“Clara, I am here.”

She did not open her eyes.

The security chief carefully moved the bed. We put our fingers under the mattress and found something hard. It was a thin plastic bag, and inside it were a small memory card and Clara’s phone.

“This was not here before,” he said.

The phone’s screen was cracked, though I found the last recording open. Clara’s face was visible in the video. She was standing at home, in the kitchen. A small copper bell hanging on the wall was visible in the frame—the one that rang every time the entrance door opened.

Clara’s voice was trembling.

“If you have seen this recording, they have probably already come. Father says I must leave Adrian. And my brothers threaten that they will take the child away from me.”

The door opened in the video. The bell rang once.

Clara looked at the camera.

“Adrian knows nothing. I did not allow him to sacrifice himself fighting them. But today Father told me that he also has someone in the hospital.”

Zurab’s voice sounded in the frame.

“Sign that the husband stopped the treatment. If not, you will lose this child too.”

Clara hid the camera, but the recording continued. Nine men entered the room. Their faces were visible. The sounds of blows, threats, and Zurab’s order that no one call anyone could be heard.

At the end of the video, Clara covered the camera with her hand.

“Adrian, if this reached you, remember that I have never regretted being with you.”

The screen went dark.

For several seconds I could not breathe. Then I turned toward Zurab.

“You told her that you would take the child away.”

!!!  Part 4 — My family asked me not to wear the uniform, but when I entered the hall, my father’s face suddenly went pale

“She is my daughter and she lives by my rules,” he said.

“You made her sign a false document.”

“Do you think your money will make everyone forget you?”

“No. Your words will make everyone forget you.”

At that very moment, two investigators entered the room. They had a search warrant agreed with a judge in their hands. But no one had been arrested yet. All the participants were alive, and all were still trying to escape responsibility.

One of the investigators asked me for my phone.

“We must register this recording as official evidence.”

I gave him the phone. Zurab did not yet have handcuffs on, but for the first time I realized that his power was over.

Then a call came through my hidden line. On the other end was my lawyer, Mariam.

“Adrian, the video is enough for the attack, but we found a second matter. Six years ago, Clara’s father investigated all your assets. He did not want only money.”

“Then what did he want?”

Mariam exhaled.

“He knew about your true identity. And now someone has given this information to the press. An investigation against you will begin in the morning…”

Zurab heard this and suddenly smiled.

“In the end they will still find out who you are, Adrian…”
