I signed the divorce papers, but when he brought the babies home, his mother’s smile suddenly disappeared

The day after signing the divorce, my ex-husband sent me a photo of twins and wrote: “Here is the family you could never give me.”

That evening I was sitting in the study of my apartment. The last page of the divorce agreement lay on the table, and beside it was a small copper key that I had inherited from my father. The key was shaped like a lighthouse, and since childhood I had known that Father used it only when he opened the family safe.

The phone lit up again.

In the photo Christopher had sent, Michelle was smiling, holding a boy in one hand and a girl in the other. The children had different blankets from each other: the boy’s was white with thin golden stripes, and the girl’s was lilac.

“Healthy twins. Michelle and I are starting a new life. I hope you can move forward too,” his message said.

I stared at the words for a long time. Then I wrote only one thing in reply:

“Congratulations.”

It was not coldness. It was the last strength I had left for myself.

For three years Christopher told everyone that I could not have children. The doctors confirmed three times that neither of us had any obvious medical problem. I repeated this every time, but Christopher shook his head as if my body were guilty.

“Doctors cannot always find the reason,” he told me once in the clinic parking lot. “But I want a family, Victoria.”

“I do too. But a family cannot be built on a lie.”

He did not answer me then. He only shut the car door so hard that the windows rattled.

The next morning he came with his lawyer to the living room of my apartment. Cardboard boxes stood along the wall, and rain ran down the window in thin lines.

“We will divide everything calmly,” Christopher said. “You like numbers and tables, after all.”

His lawyer pointed toward the folder.

“Here are listed only the assets belonging to Mr. Lawson.”

I closed the copper lighthouse key in my hand and placed my folder on the table.

“Then you have not read this.”

Christopher picked up the first sheet. His smile disappeared. It said that the company’s most important shares had been bought with money left by my father. The second sheet showed bank transfers. The third showed the clause in our marriage contract according to which this property remained my own.

“This is a trap,” he whispered.

“No. These are receipts.”

His face reddened.

“What are you going to do with the money? I have a family! And you could not even get pregnant!”

Such silence fell over the room that I clearly heard the ticking of the wall clock.

I was waiting for only one question.

“Then explain to me, Christopher, how Michelle became pregnant almost immediately, and with twins at that?”

The lawyer lowered his head. And for the first time Christopher could not meet my eyes.

That same night I wrote to his mother, Evelyn, that the children would be brought to her house on Saturday. The answer came in one minute:

“Victoria, you have no idea what this visit confirmed.”

A week earlier Evelyn had questioned me for almost two hours about the fertility clinic, Michelle’s secret visits, and one of the members of the Lawson family.

On Saturday, exactly at noon, Evelyn’s house door opened. Christopher brought the children in. Evelyn looked at the boy, then at the girl, and the color drained from her face as if the oxygen had disappeared from the room.

“Christopher,” she whispered, “you never told her about this resemblance?”

Christopher turned toward her.

“Mother, be quiet.”

But Evelyn was already coming toward me. She was taking a small, leather-colored folder in her hand. Her fingers were trembling. She opened the clasp and reached toward the first page…

The air in Evelyn’s house was heavy. Wood crackled in the fireplace, while the children breathed quietly in the next room.

“When did you find out all this?” I asked.

“Three weeks ago,” Evelyn answered me. “Michelle was not going to the clinic alone. A member of the Lawson family accompanied her.”

Christopher looked toward the door.

“Mother, this conversation ends here.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “It begins now.”

She placed the folder on the table. The clinic stamp and my name could be seen on the outside. My heart clenched.

“Is my name there?” I asked.

Christopher quickly came toward me.

“Victoria, do not touch that.”

“Why?”

“Because it will be better for you if you know nothing.”

Those words frightened me more than all his insults.

Evelyn opened the folder. On the first page I saw my signature, but I knew I had never seen this document. The ink stain stood exactly where my pen had slipped since childhood.

“This signature is forged,” I said.

Michelle appeared at the door. The smile from the photo was no longer on her face.

“Christopher told me that you knew everything,” she said.

“What was I supposed to know?”

Christopher raised his hand.

“Be quiet, Michelle.”

But it was already too late. Evelyn placed her phone on the table and turned on a recording. Christopher’s voice sounded:

“As soon as Victoria signs, the children and the shares will remain with me.”

I gripped the chair.

“There is more,” Evelyn said, taking out a second sheet. “The biological mother and father of these twins are written here. Both names are familiar too.”

Christopher lunged to turn off the recording, but at that very moment the door opened and the clinic’s lawyer entered the room.

“Mr. Lawson,” he said, “you must return these children under the clinic’s guardianship today…”

And behind him stood a woman in a police uniform, holding yet another document…

The policewoman placed the document on Evelyn’s table. Outside, the wind struck the house windows, while inside only the monotonous breathing of the children could be heard.

“This is not an arrest warrant,” the woman said. “Yet. This is a temporary court protection order concerning the children.”

Christopher became furious.

“You have no right to break into my house!”

“This is my mother’s house,” Evelyn calmly replied. “And you are only a guest here.”

The clinic’s lawyer spread the folder open in front of me.

“Mrs. Victoria, please listen carefully. Five years ago, you and Mr. Lawson stored genetic material for in-vitro fertilization. Two embryos were created. Later you stopped the procedure because Christopher said that you were not ready yet.”

A ringing began in my ears.

“I thought they had been destroyed.”

“That is exactly what you were told,” the lawyer said. “But they were not destroyed. Mr. Lawson transferred the embryos into another woman’s body with forged consent in your name. That woman was Michelle Hart.”

Michelle covered her mouth with both hands.

“He told me the embryos were his and Christopher’s,” she said. “He told me that you were creating problems only for money.”

Christopher turned toward her.

“You knew everything!”

“I knew the children belonged to you,” Michelle sobbed. “I did not know that Victoria was their mother.”

Evelyn looked at the boy. The child had a small, crescent-shaped mark behind his left ear. I had the same mark since childhood. Father said it was a trait transmitted only through blood in our family.

“There is the resemblance,” Evelyn said. “I saw it in your childhood, Victoria. That is why I turned pale.”

I went to the boy. I touched his tiny fingers, and I felt as if the lost years had returned to me in one moment.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann erklärte vor seiner Familie, ich solle mein Essen selbst bezahlen – an seinem Geburtstag verstummte sein Lächeln

“Are they my children?” I barely asked.

The lawyer nodded at me.

“The genetic result confirms your motherhood by ninety-nine point nine percent. Mr. Lawson is also their biological father.”

Christopher leaned against the wall. For the first time I saw his victory collapse.

“Victoria, I can explain this.”

“No,” I told him. “You can only invent reasons.”

Evelyn placed one more sheet on the table.

“This is the worst part,” she said. “Christopher sent the clinic a request to declare both embryos destroyed. But a clinic employee recorded his voice.”

They turned on the recording.

“If Victoria ever finds out, she will never get the children. I will destroy her name and say that she gave me permission herself.”

Everyone in the room fell silent.

Then my phone rang. The number of the company’s financial director appeared on the screen.

“Mrs. Lawson,” the man said in a frightened voice, “all the employees are in a panic. Mr. Lawson ordered that the documents be deleted.”

Christopher looked at the phone and his face changed. He first looked at the children, then at the door.

“You have not understood whom you are fighting,” he said, and ran outside…
