My Husband Left Me Alone During Childbirth Because He Was Hurrying to His Mother’s Birthday — But He Suddenly Went Pale When He Entered the Ward

“Go alone — you’re exaggerating too much!” my husband told me when I was clutching the bed from the pain of labor and asking him to stay with me.

I still hear these words to this day.

In the morning, at six forty, the kitchen clock in our apartment was ringing when my first strong contraction began. I was in my ninth month, expecting the baby to be born at any minute, but Brandon still looked angry. He looked at his phone, then put his mother’s birthday invitation into his pocket.

“We’re going to the hospital,” I told him breathlessly.

“Today?” he asked as though this were my poorly planned appointment. “My mother is turning sixty, Sarah.”

In the car, he checked his phone at every red light. He nervously tapped the leather steering wheel with his fingers, while I touched my stomach and tried not to bow my head because of his words.

“Maybe you could postpone it for a few hours?” he muttered.

“Brandon, the baby is coming.”

“Maybe it isn’t coming yet. The doctor said first labor lasts a long time, didn’t he?”

At the hospital reception, at seven in the morning, a nurse examined me and her face immediately changed.

“It’s active labor,” she said. “We need to move her quickly.”

Brandon sighed heavily.

“My mother has been planning this evening all week.”

Another pain struck me. I searched for his hand, but he pulled his fingers away from mine.

“Please, don’t leave,” I told him.

“Sarah, women give birth every day.”

The nurse looked at him sternly.

“This is your wife and your child. She needs your support now.”

“My mother turns sixty only once,” he replied.

I saw a small silver musical medallion on the floor beside my bed. My grandmother had given it to me and told me to turn on its melody when the baby was born. It had fallen out of my bag. I picked it up and clenched it in my palm, as if that little object could hold back my fear.

“This is your child too,” I told Brandon.

He picked up the car keys.

“I’ll come back in the evening.”

“No. Please, stay.”

He walked toward the door.

“Go and give birth. I’ll come later.”

The door closed.

Something inside me broke at that moment, but the pain did not even allow me that. The nurse put a hand on my shoulder and urgently called my father. Half an hour later, Robert and my sister Emma appeared in the hospital corridor. Small drops of snow lay on my father’s coat.

!!!  My servant made my disabled daughter stand, but one question of hers silenced every voice in the room

“I’m here, girl,” he told me and hugged me. “This time you’re not alone anymore.”

It lasted six hours. I held Emma’s hand so tightly that a red mark remained around her wrist. At seven forty-two in the evening, my son Noah was born.

When they placed him on my chest, his warm cheek touched my skin and all the pain went far away in one moment.

Brandon did not call.

He did not send a message either.

Two days later, before I was discharged from the hospital, the door opened slowly. Brandon entered with a small bouquet of flowers and smiled awkwardly.

“Congratulations,” he said.

But when he looked around the room, his smile disappeared. Beside Noah’s crib stood my father, and behind him stood two lawyers holding thick folders.

Robert looked directly into his eyes.

“We were waiting for you.”

Brandon stopped. One of the lawyers placed a dark green folder on the table and opened its clasp. I was looking at the medallion, which was quietly shining on the edge of Noah’s crib, when the lawyer reached toward the first page…

The lawyer’s fingers touched the first page of the folder. Brandon looked first at my father, then at me.

“What is happening?”

“Sit down,” Robert told him.

“This is a hospital, Robert.”

“That is exactly why we came here.”

The lawyer said calmly:

“Mrs. Mitchell already has legal representation. This is a divorce petition.”

The blood drained from Brandon’s face.

“Sarah, over one evening?”

“Not over one evening,” I answered. “That evening I realized that I had gone through the entire pregnancy alone.”

My father opened the second folder. Inside were records of missed doctor’s visits, unanswered messages, empty places in the parenting course, and a copy of the hospital entrance camera footage.

“This is all a mistake,” Brandon whispered.

“A mistake happens once,” I told him. “But you made a choice every time.”

At that moment his phone rang. He went into the corridor and returned several minutes later.

“They temporarily suspended me from work,” he said. “Someone spread this story.”

He looked toward Noah.

!!!  A szomszédsági egyesület elpusztította a mólómat és elsüllyesztette a hajómat, aztán a nyomozó feltette az első kérdést

“I want to hold my son.”

I covered the crib with my hand.

“You will have that right, but today only your wishes no longer decide everything.”

Brandon lowered his head. Then the lawyer extended a small sealed envelope toward me.

“Sarah, this document was intended only for you. Opening it is necessary now because Brandon is here…”

I touched the seal of the envelope with my finger…

I broke the seal of the envelope. Such silence fell over the room that I could even hear the small bell hanging above Noah’s crib swaying.

I took out the paper and read it. At the very first paragraph, my breath caught.

“What does it say?” Brandon asked.

I could not answer. The lawyer Levan carefully took the paper from me.

“Mrs. Mitchell, this is your father’s notarized statement. One week before your wedding day, Robert Hayes created an independent family trust in your name. It includes the apartment, your savings, and the company your grandfather left you.”

Brandon’s eyes widened.

“What company?”

For the first time, my father interrupted his look.

“The small medical-device enterprise that Sarah managed before the marriage.”

“You told me you were only a consultant,” Brandon leaned toward me.

“You never asked,” I answered.

Levan turned over the second page.

“According to the trust’s rule, the husband has no right to use either the property or the company accounts. But there is an additional note.”

Brandon’s voice broke.

“Which note?”

“During the last six months, money has been transferred from the company account to your personal account.”

Robert placed a statement on the table. The amounts appeared one after another: small transfers, on the same days, to the name of the same recipient.

Brandon stood up from the chair.

“That was my salary.”

“The company is not yours,” I told him.

“You yourself told me I should take care of the finances!”

“I told you to pay the bills. Not to secretly empty my account.”

His face became gray in one moment.

“Sarah, I’ll return the money.”

“The money is no longer the main thing.”

My father turned on the video recording. On the screen Brandon could be seen entering the company office late at night. He was telling my financial manager:

“Don’t tell Sarah anything. Everything must be under my control before the baby is born.”

!!!  The Husband Took His Secretary on the Honeymoon, but When the Plane Landed, the Smile Suddenly Disappeared from His Face

Those in the room looked at one another. Brandon turned his back to the screen.

“That was taken out of context.”

“That is your voice,” I told him.

For the first time he heard his own words the way others heard them. His hands began to tremble.

The lawyer took out the next document.

“It says here that from today Mr. Mitchell is prohibited from entering the company office, accessing the accounts, and contacting the employees.”

Brandon looked toward Noah.

“You are going to take everything away from me?”

“I am taking nothing away from you,” I told him. “I am simply stopping what you were secretly taking.”

Suddenly my father’s phone rang. He listened, his face changed color, and he ended the call.

“Who was it?” I asked.

Robert looked toward me.

“The company’s financial manager. She said Brandon was not acting alone. And now the person who approved all the transfers has requested a meeting with you.”

Brandon raised his head. Fear returned to his eyes.

“Sarah, don’t meet them.”

At that moment I realized that the heaviest truth was still ahead. Because the person asking to meet me was already waiting outside the hospital…
