Flynn left my bloodied body on the carpet and put a coat over the woman who said that I had hit her. At that moment I realized that my husband was no longer merely angry — he had already decided on my death.
For three years I abandoned my own career and devoted myself to his company, home, and life. Flynn was the chief executive officer of Vance Global, and I was his wife — the woman he smiled at in front of everyone and turned his back on at night. Our marriage had one name stuck into it like a thorn: Selina Cole, his first love.
That day, at four in the afternoon, I was alone at home. I was wearing a silk pajama, the windows were closed, and the kettle was letting off steam in the kitchen. I had not gone outside. No one had come either.
Then the door opened as if someone was afraid that I would not have time to stop him.
Selina rushed in. She had a thin scratch on her left forearm, so insignificant that not even a drop of blood could be seen. Her face was wet with tears.
“Mabel, I did not want to come here,” she sobbed. “You cornered me in the street, pushed me against a wall, and threatened me.”
“That is a lie! I was at home all day!”
Flynn stood behind her. He was cutting an apple in his hand, and the silver blade of the knife was still shining. He slowly placed the fruit on the marble table.
“Did you touch her?” he asked me.
“No. Selina, tell him that you are lying to me.”
Selina lowered her eyes.
“Please, Flynn, do not fight because of me. Let us just leave.”
That one sentence ended everything.
Flynn picked up the knife. Nothing remained in his eyes — neither doubt, nor love, nor the man with whom I had lived for three years.
“If you touch Selina one more time, I swear to God, I will kill you.”
I received the first blow in the stomach. The second when I could no longer breathe. My knees gave way and I fell onto the Persian carpet. In my ear I heard only the kettle’s whistling.
Flynn stepped over me and knelt beside Selina.
“Everything will be all right now,” he whispered.
Selina looked at me from over his shoulder.
And smiled.
I closed my eyes, relaxed my body, and hid my left hand under the carpet. I was wearing my favorite watch on my wrist, with a pink metal band. The previous week its screen had cracked and it reacted to touch only when pressed hard.
Blood was flowing warmly between my fingers. Flynn was telling Selina that soon we would be free. And I pressed the watch screen twice.
The recording started.
Three days passed. I opened my eyes in the intensive care unit. Every exhalation burned like fire in my stomach, but my first thought was not my own life.
Flynn entered the room with an enormous bouquet of white roses.
“Mabel…”
Doctor Marcus Reed immediately stepped between us.
“Mr. Vance, before you come close to her, there is one thing you must know.”
“I am her husband. Get out of my way.”
Marcus took an ultrasound image from the folder and placed it on the table. Two small shadows could be seen there.
Flynn looked at the image, then looked at me.
“This is impossible,” he murmured.
The doctor answered calmly:
“It is not impossible. Your wife is pregnant. With twins.”
For the first time I saw fear on Flynn’s face. But at that same moment someone knocked on the room door. Marcus opened it, and a dark-haired woman entered, holding a brown folder.
“I am not your lawyer,” she told me and stopped beside the bed. “I am the person who knows why your husband tried to kill you.”
Flynn took a step forward.
The woman touched the clasp of the folder and said:
“Before I open this, Mrs. Mabel, are you ready to hear what the man standing near your blood was saying?…”
The woman introduced herself to me as Nora Hales and locked the door. Flynn immediately shouted:
“Who let you in here?”
“I did,” Marcus answered. “And if you take one more step, I will call security.”
Nora placed the folder on the bed. Its corner was worn, as if someone had not let go of it the entire way.
“The watch saved the recording,” she told me. “But we have not opened the file yet.”
Flynn turned pale.
“What recording are you talking about?”
I barely managed to make my voice come out:
“The one of what you said when you thought I was dead.”
Selina appeared at the room door. She had probably followed Flynn. Her scratch was already covered with a small bandage.
“This is madness,” she said. “Mabel is in shock.”
Nora looked at her for the first time.
“Then the truth will not frighten you.”
Flynn tried to bend over my bed, but Marcus blocked his way.
“If that recording exists, I will take it to the media,” Flynn said.
“No,” I answered. “First we must all listen to it together.”
Nora took the watch out of a small protective bag. The screen was broken, while the pink band had darkened with blood.
She pressed the power button.
My weak breathing sounded in the room. Then Flynn’s voice.
“She is gone. Exactly as you told me.”
Selina placed her hand against the wall.
Nora scrolled to the final part of the file and placed her finger on the frozen screen…

Nora pressed her finger against the screen. For several seconds only the monotonous beeping of the machine could be heard. Then Flynn’s voice sounded in the room as if we were standing in our living room again.
“She is gone,” he was saying in a hoarse voice. “I did it, Selina. Now we are free.”
The color disappeared from Selina’s lips.
Her whisper could also be heard in the recording:
“Are you sure she is dead?”
“I struck her twice. The doctor will consider it an accident. You will say that you were protecting yourself. And I will say that my wife attacked you.”
Silence fell in the room.
Flynn shook his head.
“It is edited.”
“That is your voice,” I said.
“I was not going to kill you!”
“But you said that you did it.”
Nora played the recording again. This time Selina’s laughter sounded — quiet, satisfied, cold.
“When she dies, the company will be yours. The insurance money too. And her father’s trust will finally be opened to you.”
Flynn was silent for a long time.
Then he said:
“There should not have been twins.”
My chest tightened. Doctor Marcus immediately gripped my wrist.
“These children are heirs to your father’s trust,” Selina continued. “If Mabel does not live to give birth, custody will remain with you. Then we will control everything.”
Flynn lowered his voice.
“And if the children are born?”
“Then your wife must not be alive.”
Selina leaned her back against the wall. Tears came from her eyes, but this time no one believed her.
Marcus called a security guard. Flynn stood motionless, as if he were hearing his own words for the first time.
“I was confused,” he said. “Selina forced me.”
“You were holding the knife,” I answered.
“Mabel, please, this is a family.”
“Family is the person who stays beside you when you are bleeding.”
Nora placed another sheet of paper on the table.
“The recording is only the beginning. Bank transfers and medical certificates from the last two months show that your poisoning had already slowly begun.”
Flynn looked at the sheet.
“This is impossible.”
“No,” Nora said. “The only impossible thing was that you would ever remain unpunished.”
At that same moment a call came in on her phone. Nora listened, her expression changed, and she turned toward me.
“The police are not coming here yet. They found another address where someone was renting a room under Selina’s name.”
“Who?” I asked.
Nora looked at the phone screen.
“A person whom Flynn declared dead three years ago. And that person is waiting for you now in the parking lot beneath the hospital…”
