Part 4 — They Charged Me for a Four-Hundred-Dollar Dinner, but in the Morning the Manager Handed Me a Leather Folder and His Face Changed

I read Chloe’s message, and a coldness froze inside my body.

“She must not be alone at home,” I said.

Maria was already speaking on the phone.

“A police unit is going to the address. You stay here.”

“No, I am going to my sister.”

“Anna, this could be a trap,” the man told me.

“I know. But she is still my sister.”

Julian jumped up.

“No one will take anything from you. Just go home and tell her that the message was a mistake.”

“You mentioned my sister.”

“I did not write that message.”

Maria stood in front of him.

“But you created the system that allowed someone to do this.”

Julian took out his phone and called someone.

“Cancel everything,” he said quietly. “Right now.”

We could not hear the answer on the other side, but Julian’s face gradually changed.

“No, I did not say that you should frighten Anna.”

Maria moved one step away from him.

“Turn on speakerphone.”

“It is not necessary.”

“Turn it on.”

Julian did not move his hand. Maria took the phone from him herself and switched it to speakerphone.

A woman’s voice came from the other side.

“It is too late. The girl is already on the stairs. If you do not pay the money, we will also say that we did everything on your orders.”

Silence fell over the room.

Julian leaned against the wall.

“You said that you would simply carry out the assignment.”

“You said that the employees would not dare anything.”

For the first time I heard his voice as others heard it: frightened, rough, and desperate. He could no longer hide from his own words.

The police arrived soon. Two officers stood on both sides of Julian. At first he tried anger.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Then he looked at me.

“Anna, tell them that I was only following the rules.”

I looked into his eyes.

“You were not following rules. You were using people’s fear.”

The sound of the handcuffs was not as loud as I had imagined. A small metallic click sounded, and his hands were behind his back.

Maria came over to me.

!!!  A mãe do meu melhor amigo pediu uma foto no jardim, mas depois do meu elogio seu sorriso desapareceu

“Chloe is safe. The police found her at the neighbor’s. The strange man ran away, but the cameras captured his face.”

My knees gave way. I sat down on a nearby chair.

“Did nothing happen to her?”

“No.”

For the first time that morning, I breathed out.

Three hours later, Robert, the owner of the restaurant, arrived. He wore a spectacular ring cracked on the opposite side, and his face was so extinguished that he looked as if he were standing in the ruins of his own house.

“I thought Julian was simply a strict manager,” he said.

“You were not checking the employees’ signatures,” I told him.

“That is my fault.”

“It was your negligence. But his choice was his.”

Robert lowered his head.

“I will return the money to you.”

“I did not lose only money.”

At these words he fell silent for the first time.

The police took the folder. However, before that Maria gave me a copy of every page. On the last sheet my name was written. Beside it was a small mark made in Julian’s handwriting: “Weak point—family.”

Those words hurt me more than four hundred dollars.

The next day Julian’s lawyer called me.

“My client wants you to change your statement,” he told me.

“Why?”

“He says that you too would have benefited if the forged accounts had remained hidden.”

“Tell him that I did not keep silent even when four hundred dollars was my last money.”

“That sounds like a threat.”

“No. It is a fact.”

The case reached court, but one important thing happened before that. Julian heard his own recorded voice in full.

Several days before the hearing, Maria called me.

“We found the video too,” she told me.

“Another recording?”

“The restaurant camera. It shows the couple leaving through the back door, but the main thing is something else. Julian meets them ten minutes earlier.”

In the small courtroom, the video was played on the screen. Julian stood in the corner and handed the couple money. Then he turned toward the camera and pointed to the empty booth.

His voice could be heard clearly.

!!!  Am semnat pentru incinerarea soției mele însărcinate, dar când am cerut să-i văd chipul, fratele ei a încremenit

“Tomorrow you will charge Anna. If she pays the money, the problem will be solved.”

Julian raised his head.

“That is not my voice.”

The lawyer looked at him.

“Julian, that is your voice.”

“You are responsible for defending me!”

“I cannot deny the facts.”

The lawyer closed the folder and stood up from the table.

“I am no longer going to remain in this case.”

Julian was left alone.

After that day, the employees filed a complaint together. The money was returned to us gradually. It took some people several months, and others longer. As for me, I could no longer return to the restaurant.

Not because I was afraid.

Because every table there had Julian’s voice.

In one week I left my old job and began working in a small café at the other end of the city. The tables there were wooden, and celery-colored curtains hung on the windows. The coffee machine made the same sound every morning.

On the first day the owner asked me:

“Our rule is that if a guest cannot pay, we do not charge the bill to the employee. Is that acceptable?”

I smiled.

“For me, this is already a luxury.”

When I started working, Chloe drew me a small picture. In the picture, two people stood under a yellow umbrella. One had a very large head, and the other held a coffee cup in her hand.

“This is us,” she told me.

“Why do I have such a big head?”

“Because you think about everything.”

“And why do you have an umbrella in sunny weather?”

“Because you have to be ready.”

Her words stayed in my heart for a long time.

Three months later, the court sentenced Julian for extorting money from the employees, using forged documents, and financial fraud. The other two people made a deal and testified against us.

I did not wait for their punishment.

My victory was that the sound of the alarm clock no longer frightened me in the morning.

Four months later, the first snow came. I was looking at the street from the café window when I received a message from an unknown number on my phone.

!!!  PARTEA 4 — Cumnata mea și-a lovit fiica în fața tuturor, dar când am scos telefonul, zâmbetul ei a dispărut

“Anna, everything has gone too far. We can start over. I still helped you find a job.”

It was Julian.

Then a second message came.

“Come, talk to me at least once.”

I looked at the screen for a long time. Before, at such times, I would write a reply. I would explain. I would calm them. I would try to lead everyone out of the chaos created by others.

This time I wrote only one word.

“No.”

Then I blocked the number.

When I returned home in the evening, Chloe was sitting on the floor and cleaning her yellow umbrella. The purple star on the handle had almost faded away.

“Shall we buy a new umbrella?” I asked.

She shook her head.

“No. This one saved us.”

“The umbrella?”

“No. The fact that you did not keep silent.”

I sat beside her. Small snowflakes fell against the window. On the table lay my old pocket notebook. On the last page it said four hundred eleven dollars and twenty cents, but below it I had already made a new entry: “I lost nothing of my own.”

Chloe leaned the umbrella against the door.

This time the sky was clear.

I was no longer afraid of the rain anyway.

Missed the beginning?
