They Charged Me for a Four-Hundred-Dollar Dinner, but in the Morning the Manager Handed Me a Leather Folder and His Face Changed

When that couple quietly slipped out of the restaurant after a four-hundred-dollar dinner, Julian charged the bill to me and told me that it was my responsibility.

Those four hundred dollars did not have the same value for me as they did for them. For them, it was wine, steak, and dessert for one evening. For me, it was part of the rent, my younger sister Chloe’s medicine, and the electricity bill, which was already two days overdue.

It was six o’clock in the evening, and the golden lighting fell in long strips across the floor of the restaurant. I was standing in a black apron and arranging glasses on the tables when Julian gestured with his head toward the corner.

“This table is yours, Anna. They are special guests.”

In the corner sat a dark-haired woman and a tall man. The woman wore pearl-colored earrings, and the man had an expensive watch whose dial reflected the flame of the restaurant candle. They had not even looked at the menu.

“Bring us the best thing,” the man told me. “Do not worry about the prices.”

“I will choose the wine by the same principle,” I replied.

The woman smiled, but her eyes were cold.

They ordered oysters, two large steaks, veal, three cocktails, and a bottle of wine whose price exceeded my one week’s salary. Almost the entire evening they barely spoke to me. They moved their fingers only when they needed something.

At nine forty in the evening, the man raised his hand.

“The bill.”

I placed the receipt on a wooden tray. The amount came to four hundred eleven dollars and twenty cents.

“You will come back very quickly, won’t you?” the woman asked me.

“Of course.”

I spilled wine at another table. A few minutes later I returned.

The booth was empty.

Only the woman’s napkin remained on the chair, folded as if someone had deliberately left it. The tray had disappeared. The entrance door was already closing.

I ran to Julian. I knocked on the door of his office so hard that my palms began to hurt.

“They left,” I said. “They did not pay the bill.”

Julian did not even take his eyes off the monitor.

“Was it your table?”

“Yes, but we have cameras. You just need to check them.”

“Checking the cameras will not bring the money back.”

“I cannot cover this amount.”

This time he looked at me.

“Then you should have worked more carefully.”

A small copper bell stood on the edge of his desk. He struck it slowly, as if our conversation were over.

!!!  When my mother-in-law invited twelve guests to my house, after my calm answer my husband stopped smiling for the first time

I took the small pocket notebook of the day’s navigation from my pocket. Inside, I had written down all the expenses for that month. On the last page was the amount of the rent, and below it the price of Chloe’s medicine. Four hundred eleven dollars and twenty cents would erase all of it.

“It is not my fault,” I said.

“The rules are the same for everyone.”

At ten o’clock at night I emptied all my receipts. I arranged hundred-dollar bills on the table, and one slipped from my hand and rolled across the floor. Julian bent down, picked it up, and returned it to me as if he were giving me charity.

That night Chloe was waiting for me at the kitchen table at home. In front of her lay a mathematics notebook, and beside it a half-empty bottle of medicine.

“Was it another bad day?” she asked.

“Just an expensive day.”

She asked me nothing. She only leaned her small yellow umbrella against the door. A purple star was drawn on its handle, and it was still wet from the evening rain. She had had that umbrella since childhood and always carried it with her, even when the sky was completely clear.

The next morning, at nine twenty, Julian called me.

“Come to the restaurant right now,” he told me.

“Is it about the bill again?”

Silence fell on the other side for several seconds.

“Just come, Anna.”

When I entered through the heavy glass door, Julian came straight toward me. His face was pale. In his hand he held a thick, dark-brown leather folder. Its clasp was shaped like a small copper fish and was trembling slightly.

“We were cleaning the booth at night,” he said. “This was found there.”

“Whom does it belong to?”

Julian handed me the folder, but his fingers did not let go completely.

“I think you need to see this.”

Behind him, in the empty dining room, that folded napkin still lay on the table.

I reached toward the clasp…

When I lifted the folder’s clasp, Julian locked the door.

“Do not open it here,” he told me.

“Why? Yesterday you said that everything was my responsibility, didn’t you?”

His jaw tightened.

On the very first page were the restaurant’s daily accounts. Then I found employees’ signatures, amounts, and dates. My name had been written several times.

“This is not my signature.”

“I know,” Julian said.

There was also a small memory card in the folder. Beside it, in a woman’s handwriting, was one sentence: “If you have reached this, the camera was on.”

“Who wrote this?”

Julian opened the door and looked into the hallway.

“I do not know. But yesterday’s couple did not come here by accident.”

My knees gave way.

“Then why did you charge their bill to me?”

He did not answer me. At that very moment, a phone fell from the folder’s back pocket. Its screen lit up and a message appeared.

“She already has the folder. If she does not keep quiet today, move on to Chloe.”

My breath caught.

“Julian, what is this?”

He snatched the phone.

“You saw nothing.”

“They mention my sister!”

“If you are smart, you will go home and forget all of this.”

I stepped back. At that moment I understood for the first time that four hundred dollars was the smallest part of the story into which they had dragged me.

Julian looked at the memory card and said in a whisper:

“You do not yet know whose voice was recorded there…”

Julian’s last words were still hanging in the air when the restaurant’s back door opened and the woman who had sat in the corner booth the previous night entered.

Now she was no longer wearing the pearl-colored earrings. Her wet hair was stuck to her face, and she held a small bag in her hand. The tall man stood behind her, but he was no longer wearing the expensive watch.

“Maria,” Julian whispered.

“Enough,” the woman told him. “It is all over.”

“You should not have risked coming here.”

“The risk ended when your voice was recorded.”

I looked at Julian.

“Who is Maria?”

The woman answered me herself.

“I am Robert, the restaurant owner’s, financial auditor. This man is my colleague. We have been investigating the disappearance of money for three weeks.”

“And yesterday’s dinner?”

“It was a trap,” the man said. “We deliberately made the order expensive. Julian was supposed to hide where the money deducted from the employees was going.”

Julian struck the table with his hand.

“This is absurd!”

Maria bent toward the folder.

“Then listen.”

She inserted the memory card into a small device. A few seconds later, Julian’s voice sounded in the room.

“Anna will pay. If she refuses, we will tell them that the theft happened at her table. Her face is visible enough in the cameras.”

My stomach tightened. I was listening to a conversation about myself as if I were watching the life of some other woman.

!!!  TEIL 4 — Mein Mann wollte unsere achtjährige Tochter für ein zerrissenes Kleid bestrafen, doch als ich nur einen Anruf machte, erstarrte sein Gesicht

Julian’s second voice sounded in the recording.

“That couple did not pay the bill. The money goes into our account. The folder must disappear tomorrow.”

Julian lost color.

“The recording is fabricated.”

The man opened a laptop and showed bank transfers on the screen. Each was a little more than four hundred dollars. The dates matched the evenings when employees were charged for the “lost bills.”

Maria turned toward me.

“Your signatures were forged too. There are seven bills in your name. Julian extorted money from the employees, and then distributed all the evidence among them.”

“Why me?” I barely said.

“Because you would refuse last. You support Chloe, and he knew that.”

Julian suddenly moved toward the door.

“No one has called the police.”

“We already have,” Maria replied.

She placed her phone on the table. Robert’s missed calls and one new message were visible on the screen.

“I am coming. But this is not all there is about Julian.”

Julian read the message and sank into a chair.

I thought I had already heard the worst. But Maria turned over the last page of the folder. My address and Chloe’s were written there, and below them was a new date—this evening.

“This plan has not yet been carried out,” she said.

At that very moment a message came to my phone from Chloe: “Anna, there is a strange man at our door and he says that you sent him…”
