My Husband Left Me at Home for the Most Important Contract, but One Question from My Father in the Hall Took His Smile Away

“You are not coming with me.”

Diego said it as if my existence were an unnecessary object left in the room for him. He stood before the mirror, straightening his silver cufflinks—the cufflinks I had given him three years ago, when we signed his first major contract.

Beside him, Renata Cruz was straightening her ivory-colored dress. On her wrist I immediately recognized the company card, the cost of which Diego had put through two nights ago as an “expense for relations with investors.”

“Are you sure I should come?” Renata asked in a sweet voice. “Valeria is your wife.”

Diego chuckled.

“Valeria does not understand meetings like this. Today I need beside me someone who can move freely among investors, not someone who will put me in an awkward position.”

At the threshold I held a coffee cup in my hand. I squeezed the porcelain so tightly that pain ran through my wrist.

For three years I had called everything I quietly did for him “staying at home.” I found suppliers, arranged meetings, organized relations with the banks, and with the support of my father’s capital brought his company out of debt. Diego had only one wish: that no one know he was Arthur Montes’s son-in-law.

I agreed. I changed my surname publicly and became Valeria Salcedo. I thought that by doing so I was protecting his pride.

“So, you are taking her?” I asked.

“Yes. Renata worked on this project. And you will stay at home and not make scenes.”

I looked at the watch lying on the table. That too had been bought from the company account.

“Take her,” I said calmly. “I hope everything goes exactly as you imagine.”

He took my calmness as defeat.

“And if you see the photos, do not make a drama. Renata will be beside me because she is the vice president of operations. This is the final decision.”

Ten minutes later, the sound of their car disappeared in the street. Only the heavy scent of coffee and expensive perfume remained in the living room. Then I called my father.

“They left. He is taking Renata too.”

My father’s voice immediately grew cold.

“And he is putting my daughter in your place?”

“I do not want a staged scene in advance, Dad.”

“There will be no scene, Valeria. We simply will not protect him for the first time today.”

Fifteen minutes later, Luka Rangel, the compliance director of Arthur Capital, arrived. He put a laptop on the dining table and turned the screen toward me.

“Four suppliers are connected to Renata,” he told me. “Over eighteen months, more than twenty-six million was transferred to them. There are almost no supporting documents.”

“Did Diego sign?”

“Eleven transactions. In the others, the authorizations granted to Renata were used. The money leads to an apartment and two cars.”

I felt an ice-cold weight in my chest. The betrayal was no longer only about beds and lies.

At that very moment Diego called me.

“My power of attorney for representation is in the black folder. The signature key as well. Send it to me with the receptionist.”

“I will bring it myself.”

“No. The hall is full of journalists and I do not want you to appear uninvited.”

“You are signing a thirty-two-billion contract and left the documents at home?”

“Do not start, Valeria. Just do what I tell you.”

He ended the call.

Then I went upstairs, took a white suit from the wardrobe, and picked up the folder. Inside, together with the cufflinks, lay my small copper compass—the one Diego had given me on the day of the first contract and told me, “You showed me the direction.”

At the Monterrey conference center, the hall was already full. The signs of two companies shone on the screen. In front of the central seat, a white card lay face down.

Diego was smiling before the cameras. Renata sat to his right.

“Mr. Salcedo,” the lawyer of Arthur Capital told him, “the chairman directly demanded that Ms. Valeria Montes be here.”

Diego did not become confused even for a moment.

“My wife became unwell. Ms. Cruz will replace her. In fact, she performed almost all of the operational work.”

Renata took the chair.

At exactly one o’clock, the door opened and my father entered together with the board members. Diego walked toward him with a smile.

“Mr. Arthur, this contract will change our history.”

My father passed by his outstretched hands. He went to the table, looked at Renata, and closed the contract folder with a loud sound.

Silence fell over the hall.

“Before I sign even one cent, I want an explanation,” my father said.

Diego cleared his throat.

“Of course.”

My father pointed at the card lying face down.

“Why is another woman sitting in the place I reserved for my daughter?”

The color left Renata’s face. My father turned over the card, and at that very moment my name appeared…

The sound of my shoes rang through the hall and every head turned toward me. I was wearing a white suit, holding a black folder in my hand, while the small copper compass weighed in my pocket like a heavy stone.

“Valeria?” Diego barely said.

“No,” I answered. “The woman whose appearance you did not want.”

My father moved the place over for me.

“Sit down, daughter.”

Renata stood up.

“This is a misunderstanding. Diego told me that you were not coming to the meeting.”

“Diego told you many things,” I said. “Now everyone has heard them.”

Luka displayed the first page of the audit on the hall screen. Diego leaned toward me and hissed through his teeth:

“Give me the folder and go home.”

“This time you will do what you are told.”

The lawyer reached for the folder’s lock, but my father stopped him.

“This must be clarified first,” he said.

The names of the companies connected to Renata appeared on the screen. Someone in the hall whispered quietly. Renata looked at Diego.

“You said everything was in order.”

For the first time Diego could not find an answer.

My father leaned toward me.

“Valeria, that is not the only thing he hid from you. In the black folder there is a document that can change his entire plan.”

The cold edge of the compass touched my fingers. The folder’s lock was already open, but Luka placed his hand on the sealed envelope inside.

“This letter arrived this morning,” he said. “And only you can open it.”

The cameras in the hall switched on. I reached toward the envelope when Diego suddenly shouted:

“If you open this, Valeria, your family will also fall apart…”

His words remained hanging in the air as if suspended. I did not take my hand away from the envelope.

“My family fell apart the day you replaced it with someone else’s bed and stolen money,” I told him.

Luka locked the hall doors. My father stood silently, but his clenched jaw showed how strongly he was holding himself back.

“Open the envelope, Ms. Montes,” said the lawyer of Arthur Capital.

I tore open the sealed paper. Inside were three sheets and a small memory card. The first sheet was the auditor’s conclusion, the second a bank statement, and the third the cancellation of the authorization issued in my name.

“This is impossible,” Diego whispered.

Luka switched on the microphone.

“For eighteen months, funds from Salcedo Infrastructure were transferred to four companies nominally registered in the name of Renata Cruz’s cousin. The final beneficiary turned out to be Mr. Diego Salcedo.”

Renata turned her head toward him.

“You told me it was your personal money.”

“Shut up, Renata.”

“You told me that Valeria checked nothing!”

Fear appeared in her voice. On Diego’s face there was anger, not shame.

“Because she did nothing!” he shouted. “She sat at home all day and controlled my life.”

Such silence fell over the hall that I heard the squeak of the screen’s fan. My fingers closed around the compass.

My father turned on the audio recording. On the recording, Diego’s voice could be heard telling the financial manager two days earlier:

“If the contract is signed, I will fire Valeria. I will no longer need her family’s money. And Renata will run the company together with me.”

At the end of the recording, Renata’s laughter was heard.

Diego struck the chair with his hand.

“This is illegal!”

“Then you will explain it in court,” Luka answered. “But first you must know one thing. The owner of this contract is no longer Salcedo Infrastructure.”

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?”

For the first time my father looked at me not as a daughter to be protected, but as an equal partner.

“Three months ago, Arthur Capital acquired the plan written by you. The project rights passed into your name. Diego’s company was left only the role of contractor—on the condition that you attend the signing.”

Diego turned pale.

“You knew this?”

“No,” I told him. “I knew only that they were stopping the assistance. I learned the rest just now.”

The lawyer took another sheet from the folder.

“And this is a notification from the bank. Mr. Salcedo’s personal accounts have been temporarily frozen because an attempt to transfer funds from them was detected.”

Diego took out his phone. He looked at the screen and his hands began to tremble.

At that very moment my phone rang. The number was unfamiliar. I answered.

“Ms. Montes,” said a man’s worried voice, “I am the chief engineer of Salcedo Infrastructure. This morning we discovered that another file was sent from the company server. It contains a signature in your name, but you never signed it…”
