Part 4 — At a Family Dinner, Father Celebrated My Brother’s Promotion, but After One Sentence from Me, His Smile Froze on His Face

“Who was with him?” I asked.

The head of security exhaled before answering.

“Your father.”

The words hit as if someone in the room had smashed a window.

It was not yet dawn. Only the small kitchen light was on in my apartment. Yesterday’s coffee stood on the table, and the foam on top had already disappeared.

“Send me the recording,” I said.

“We must hand it over to the police first.”

“Send it.”

A few seconds later, the video appeared on my phone.

The frame showed the corridor of my office. The time was two sixteen at night. First Tyler appeared. Then Father.

Father was holding an old key.

The kind of key that opened only the founders’ room.

His voice could be heard clearly in the video.

“Do it quickly. In the morning we will blame everything on Carter.”

Tyler answered:

“If we find the book, we can approve several more transfers in his name.”

I paused the video.

My entire body froze.

My family was working against me in my company.

But still I could not feel victory. I felt only exhaustion. Such exhaustion as if for six years I had been dragging the same heavy box and had only now realized that it was not mine at all.

Nika arrived at seven in the morning.

“We have to call the investigator,” he told me.

“First I will talk to Father.”

“Carter, he already had a chance to tell the truth.”

“I know.”

I called Father. He did not answer. He did not answer the second time either. On the third, his voice came through.

“Carter, all of this is not as it seems.”

“Then tell me how it is.”

“Tyler needed money.”

“And you decided to steal in my name?”

“I wanted to protect the family.”

“From whom?”

Silence fell on the line.

“From you,” he said at last. “You always lived separately. I knew that one day you would take everything and leave nothing for the family.”

These words hurt me more than the stolen money.

“I took nothing from you, Father. You simply never asked what I was creating.”

“Tyler is your brother.”

“And I am your son.”

He could not find an answer.

That same day both of them came to the office. Twenty-two employees were sitting in the conference room. A small wooden speaker lay on the table, and beside it was a folder stamped with my company’s seal.

Tyler was pale. Father was trying to be again the man whose word everyone listened to.

“This is a family matter,” he said.

“No,” I answered. “This is a matter of the salaries and trust of one hundred and fifty people.”

Nika turned on the video.

Father’s own voice sounded in the room.

“Do it quickly. In the morning we will blame everything on Carter.”

Father raised his head.

His own words struck the walls and returned.

Tyler lowered his eyes.

“I only wanted to get the money back,” he said.

“From whom?” I asked.

“From you.”

“You thought I was doing nothing.”

“That is what I was told.”

“By whom?”

Tyler looked at Father.

No answer was needed.

Father pushed the chair back.

“We are family!”

“Family is not someone who steals your name,” Nika said. “This is already a legal matter.”

Father called a lawyer. The lawyer listened for several minutes and then refused to represent them because he also discovered a suspicious letter about the use of his own name in the video.

Tyler dropped the phone onto the table.

“Are you happy now?”

I shook my head.

“No. I simply am no longer going to save you.”

That evening, when I returned home, I saw for the first time the empty place in the living room. For years, a small wooden ship given to me by Father had stood there, with copper wire wound around its wing, which I had attached myself in childhood. He called the object “the captain’s ship,” although afterward he rarely even remembered my existence.

The ship was gone.

Father had taken it.

The other things were in their places. Only that one was gone.

That night the police arrested both of them on charges of attempted fraud, forging a signature, and misappropriating company funds. Tyler admitted the very next day that he had carried out part of the transfers himself. Father initially denied everything, but the video left his words against him.

I did not go to court for revenge.

I went so that the truth would be established to the end.

Several weeks later, both received sentences. Tyler was stripped of his position, and the contract concluded with him was canceled. The court ordered Father to compensate my company for the damage.

Mother wrote to me every week.

At first she sent only one word: “Sorry.”

I did not answer immediately.

Sometimes an apology needs time to turn from noise into a real word.

Three months later Mother came to my new office. I had moved into an old station building in a small town. The tracks could be seen from the window, and in the morning the employees’ footsteps could be heard softly on the wooden floor.

Mother was holding a small box.

“I found this in your father’s room,” she said.

Inside the box was my wooden ship. The copper wire was still wound around its wing.

“Why did he take it?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Probably because he finally realized that it was the only thing he had from you.”

I ran my hand over the ship.

“I don’t want anything from him anymore.”

“I know.”

“Mother, you are no longer obliged to be a bridge between me and him either.”

She nodded and for the first time did not say that family is more precious than anything.

In the following months, my life was rebuilt from small habits. In the morning I walked to the office. I greeted the employees by name. Once a week I went down to the warehouse myself. In the evening I no longer turned my phone face down on the table.

I temporarily closed Tyler’s department and appointed a new manager in its place—a woman who had quietly done the most difficult work for six years and whose name had never been mentioned at family dinners.

On the first snow, I visited my little nephew, Luka, at the office. He had drawn a large ship on a sheet of paper. Copper-colored lines ran across its wings.

!!!  Mi esposo me dejó de pie durante un viaje interminable, pero al oír mi respuesta su sonrisa desapareció por completo

“Is this you?” I asked.

“No,” he told me. “This is the ship that is returning home.”

His answer tightened my heart.

That evening I received a message from Tyler.

“Carter, I will return everything. Just talk to me. We are brothers.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I wrote:

“I was always your brother. You chose to know only my capabilities. Now I choose not to give my life to your choice anymore.”

He called me once more.

I did not answer the call.

I stood by the window. Snow was falling onto the roofs of the city. On the wooden shelves stood the small ship, with copper wire wrapped around its wing.

For years I thought that I would never be enough for my family.

Now I understood that I had been enough from the day I first began making my way alone.

I touched the ship one last time.

This time it was not returning home.

I was already on the road.

Missed the beginning?
