Three Minutes Before the Wedding, I Found My Daughter in the Laundry Room, and When I Saw My Bride, My Sister’s Smile Disappeared

Three minutes before the wedding, I found my nine-year-old daughter in a locked laundry room, and in her hand a small copper bell from the flower basket was trembling.

“Dad, open the door, please,” her quiet voice came from inside.

I was standing in the service corridor of the Willow Ridge Hotel and for several seconds could not understand why the lock had been locked from the outside. Wedding music was coming from the courtyard, while the walls smelled of lemon cleaning liquid and a hot iron.

The key was hanging on a small wooden hook. My hand froze when I took it.

“Emily, it’s me. I’ll open it now.”

“Vanessa told me to stay here until the ceremony was over.”

The lock clicked.

My daughter was sitting beside the washing machine, her knees pulled to her chest. Dust lay on the skirt of her pale-blue dress, and the flower basket lay beside her. The small copper bell tied to its handle was swaying as if it too were afraid.

Five years earlier, when her mother, Caroline, died after an unexpected illness, Emily often got lost in the house. But that day her silence seemed like something else. She was trying to be strong for her father.

I was a colonel and for years had learned how not to let fear show on my face. Yet at that moment military rank meant nothing.

“Why did she hide you here?”

Emily looked toward the door.

“She told me that everything had to be perfect today. When I walked to the altar with you, the guests would remember Mom and would no longer look at Vanessa.”

Something heavy broke inside my heart.

“What else did she tell you?”

“She told me that a new family should leave old things behind. And that after the wedding many things would be different.”

“For example?”

Emily gripped the basket handle. The copper bell rang once.

“She told me that if I behaved well, maybe I would no longer need to go to school. As if… staying at home were better. And that you would soon understand whose side you should take.”

My breath caught.

Vanessa had been in my life for two years. She remembered that Emily loved strawberry filling and hated sugar icing. Once she told me, “Loving your daughter does not mean I am replacing Caroline.” That was exactly why I asked her to marry me.

And now my daughter was locked in a laundry room because someone was afraid that her existence would overshadow the wedding.

“Come to me,” I said.

Emily stood up, but immediately stopped.

“Will there really be no wedding?”

I knelt in front of her.

“No one will hide you today anymore.”

My sister Laura appeared in the corridor. She first saw Emily’s sunken eyes, and then the open door.

“Andrew, what happened?”

I did not answer. I took Emily’s hand and led her toward the courtyard. The music was getting closer. The guests’ whispers were becoming clearer. Behind the white door Vanessa was already waiting for me to appear.

I handed the basket to Laura.

“Stay beside Emily.”

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at Vanessa. She was holding a bouquet of white roses, and her face wore the kind of smile as if in a few seconds she was supposed to become my wife.

I put my hand on the door handle, and at that exact moment the phone in my pocket rang. An unknown number appeared on the screen. The call rang a second time. I answered, but the first sentence I heard there froze my blood…

“Mr. Mercer, I am attorney Daniel Haley. I need to speak with you about your daughter’s safety.”

“It’s impossible now. I have to stop the wedding.”

“That is exactly why I am calling you. Vanessa Hart left documents with me yesterday. This morning she instructed me to give them to you if anything changed.”

The wall clock in the corridor ticked noisily. Emily stood behind Laura and touched the basket’s copper bell with her finger.

“What documents?”

The attorney lowered his voice.

“A conditional agreement connected with your marriage. Also a recording that Vanessa was not supposed to destroy.”

“Where are you?”

“At the hotel’s main entrance. But do not come out alone. I saw her brother, Grant Hart, nearby.”

At that same moment I heard heavy footsteps from the direction of the courtyard. Vanessa opened the door and looked at me with a smile.

“Andrew, why did you delay? Everyone is waiting for us.”

Grant stood behind her. His hands were in his pockets, but his eyes were searching only for Emily.

“There will be no ceremony today,” I said.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“What are you saying?”

“First I need to understand why you locked my daughter up.”

Grant took a step forward.

“Be careful, Colonel. One wrong decision and you may lose custody.”

Emily clutched my hand tightly.

The attorney’s words kept ringing in my head: “A recording that Vanessa was not supposed to destroy.”

Haley told me to meet him in the conference room. Before I got there, Vanessa grabbed my hand and said quietly:

“If you leave now, you will lose everything.”

I looked at her hand and realized for the first time that perhaps she was not threatening me, but protecting herself. As I entered the room, the attorney placed a small memory card on the table and said:

“Your daughter will not show this to you, but Vanessa herself will…”

Vanessa rushed into the room before Haley could insert the memory card into the device.

“This is my private matter,” she said.

“No,” I answered. “After you locked my daughter up, this is already my family’s matter.”

It was four o’clock in the afternoon in the conference room. An unopened bottle of champagne stood on the table, and through the window the white chairs remaining in the courtyard could be seen. Emily sat with Laura and covered the copper bell of the basket with both hands.

Haley turned on the screen.

“The recording is from Vanessa’s phone. It was recorded accidentally when the phone was left on the table in the kitchen.”

Vanessa’s voice sounded from the screen.

“After the wedding Andrew will have to hand Emily over to me. If he resists, I will say in court that because of his military service he cannot care for the child.”

Then Grant’s laughter was heard.

“The main thing is to make him sign. His salary, housing allowance, and life insurance will change everything.”

Vanessa struck the table with her hand.

“I do not want money. I want to get the girl out of the way. As long as she is here, Andrew will never let Caroline go.”

Silence descended in the room.

Emily could not make a sound. Laura lowered her eyes. And I listened to my own heartbeat and understood that the woman I was going to marry wanted my daughter to disappear.

Vanessa’s face fell.

“That conversation is taken out of context.”

“Then explain it to us,” I said.

“I… I was simply nervous.”

Haley took out a second sheet.

“It says here that after the marriage Emily was to be sent temporarily to a boarding school. There is also your signature, Mr. Mercer, which supposedly confirms this document.”

“I did not sign this.”

“I know. The signature is forged.”

Grant pushed his chair back.

“This is a legal matter. Do not involve the police.”

Haley looked at him calmly.

“I already have.”

The sound of a car braking came from outside. Vanessa looked toward the window.

“What does this mean?”

“It means the recording and the forged document have been handed over to investigators,” I said.

At that moment a new message arrived on my phone. An investigator from the military police was writing that there had also been complaints from other families against Grant.

I looked at Vanessa. For the first time she had neither a smile nor an answer.

But the last sentence of the message frightened me more: “Additional footage has been retrieved from the cameras at your house. It shows who entered the child’s room the previous night…”
