Part 4 — My Mother Canceled My and the Twins’ Tickets, but When I Went Silent in Response, the Smile Disappeared from Her Face

After the investigator’s words, I could not speak for several seconds.

“Whose name is it?” I asked.

“Your father’s. Your deceased father’s.”

I stood by the window. It was raining outside, drops struck one another on the glass and slowly ran down. I still held the small copper turtle in my hand.

“My father died ten years ago.”

“That is precisely why the matter is more serious. Your mother transferred money from his old bank account and then transferred this debt into your name.”

My knees gave way.

My father was the only person who told me in childhood that “no” was a complete sentence.

And after his death my mother placed everything on me.

That same evening my mother called me twenty-one times.

Then Andrei called me.

Then Irina sent me a voice message.

“Natalia, Mother fainted. If you complain to the police, she may die.”

I deleted the message.

Not because I did not care.

Because I was no longer going to carry their fear on my back.

In the end my mother sent her lawyer. He came to my apartment at half past eight in the morning, leaned a black umbrella against the door, and told me with a very calm face:

“It is a family misunderstanding. It is in nobody’s interest to go to court.”

“A forged signature is not a misunderstanding.”

“You can demand money and close the case.”

“How much are you offering me?”

He told me a figure.

That amount was exactly half of the debt they had accumulated in my name.

“And in return?”

“You will sign that you have no further claims.”

I looked at the sheet placed on the table.

“No.”

The lawyer sighed.

“Think about it. Your mother may end up in prison.”

“That will not be the result of my decision. It will be the result of her decision.”

The lawyer picked up the papers and left.

Two days later the investigator called me.

“We have a meeting. Please come.”

At the police station, my mother, Andrei, and Irina sat in one room. My mother’s hands were trembling. Andrei was looking at the floor. Irina no longer had on her face that confident expression with which she always told me, “Do not make a drama.”

A small recorder lay on the table.

The investigator pressed the button.

My mother’s voice sounded in the room:

“Natalia will pay in the end anyway. If she refuses, we will turn the children against her.”

Then my voice sounded. A few weeks earlier, during a conversation with my mother, I had had call recording turned on on the phone.

“Why did you change my tickets?”

My mother’s answer was cold and clear:

“Because you always think everything belongs to you. You have money and you must support the family.”

I was listening to my own voice and for the first time understood how tired it sounded.

“I am your daughter, not your bank.”

“As long as we need you, that is exactly what you are.”

The recording ended.

My mother hid her face in her hands.

“I did not say it like that.”

The investigator answered calmly:

“Ma’am, that is your voice.”

Andrei looked toward me.

“Natalia, please. We only lost the house.”

“No,” I told him. “You lost the right to use my life for your rescue.”

Irina cried for the first time.

I was not happy about it.

I was not angry at them anymore either. I simply realized that escaping from their choices was not a crime.

The case reached court. The forged signatures were confirmed. The trail of bank transfers appeared. My mother, Andrei, and Irina were held criminally accountable.

The house was handed over to a new family. Before moving in, they would paint the walls a light color and create a small garden for the children.

And I took only one thing from the old apartment — the small copper turtle that hung on the key ring.

I left everything else behind.

My mother received a suspended sentence through a conditional agreement, but she still had to repay the bank debt. Andrei found a job. Irina moved to a small town. They no longer had my account, my house, or my constant consent.

Three weeks later I rented a new apartment.

It was far from the sea, but in the morning a ray of sunlight from the window fell directly onto the kitchen table. I hung Marta’s drawing on the wall — three green turtles and four yellow suns.

Maxim developed a new habit. Every morning he asked me:

“Is anyone going to ask us for money today?”

One day I hugged him.

“No, my boy. Today we only have breakfast to prepare.”

The first snow came in December. The children went outside and made a little man with their mittens. We could not find a carrot for a nose, so we stuck in a pencil.

I watched from the window and suddenly realized that peace was not a noisy victory.

It was simply a morning when the phone did not frighten you.

Several months later my mother sent me a letter.

“Come, let us talk. Family is still family.”

Together with the letter there was an old photograph. In it I was little, and my father was resting his hand on my shoulder. On the back my mother had written in her own hand: “We will always be together.”

I held the photograph in my hand for a long time.

Then I wrote my mother only one sentence:

“Family is where love is a choice and not a debt.”

I wrote nothing more.

I put the photograph in my father’s old box. I tore up the letter.

That evening I sat in the kitchen with the children. Maxim was coloring his drawing, and Marta was drawing sea waves. The keys lay on the table.

I took the small copper turtle off their ring and placed it in Marta’s hand.

“You keep this.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes a small thing reminds you where you should go.”

Marta pressed the turtle to her chest.

Outside, snow was falling quietly.

For the first time I was no longer afraid of losing.

What was mine had already stayed with me.

Freedom comes quietly.

Missed the beginning?
