When my husband’s pregnant mistress applied using my address and insurance, her call suddenly made Alistair go pale

The hospital called me that morning when my husband’s mistress was preparing to give birth at my address and was using my insurance.

I stood barefoot in the kitchen. I held a coffee cup in my hand, and my fingers were clasped around its rim so tightly that the coldness of the ceramic cut into my skin. San Francisco’s blue morning lay across the marble floor when an unknown number lit up.

“Are you Mrs. Vivian Stanford?”

“Yes.”

“I’m calling from St. Thomas Women’s Center. One of the patients provided the details of your family insurance policy and your residential address.”

The woman’s voice was cautious. It was the kind of voice people use when they know they have accidentally entered someone else’s life.

When she told me the patient’s name, the coffee went down the wrong way.

Chloe Bennett.

Twenty-six years old. A junior brand consultant for my husband’s hotel group. The woman who for the last eight months had gone with Alistair to hotel openings, smiled at photographers, and secretly entered my husband’s hotel rooms with him.

“She is scheduled to give birth today,” the coordinator continued. “Alistair Stanford is listed in the documents as the child’s presumed father.”

The room fell silent.

Even the hum of the refrigerator disappeared. Cars were moving below, but their sounds seemed to come from underwater.

“Please send me any documents that you are legally allowed to disclose,” I said. “My family’s information does not belong to her.”

“I understand, Mrs. Stanford, but the patient’s medical information is protected.”

“I am not asking you about the baby. I am asking you about my address and insurance.”

When the call ended, I went into the bedroom.

Alistair was still asleep. He lay peacefully under dark blue sheets, as if his life still existed according to the order he had built with me over the years. Beside the bed, his phone lit up.

The message was from Chloe: “The hospital called him. He knows everything. Fix it immediately.”

I picked up the phone.

“Alistair.”

He opened his eyes. I held the screen in front of him.

At first, confusion appeared on his face. Then he recognized Chloe. Finally, his face changed.

I saw fear.

“Good morning,” I said. “Will you explain why another woman is going to give birth using my address and my insurance?”

“Vivian, it isn’t that simple…”

“Then start with her name.”

He covered his face with his hands.

“Chloe’s family abandoned her. She needed help.”

“Help? That is what you call an eight-month betrayal?”

He raised his head quickly. That movement itself gave me the answer.

Eight months.

I had suspected it, but now I heard it from his own mouth.

That evening, the annual gala of the charitable foundation awaited us. I had been preparing for it for nine months. Hundreds of guests, donors, board members, his parents, and journalists were supposed to come.

“If this story becomes public today, the foundation will collapse,” he said. “The hotel shares will fall. My parents…”

“Your parents?”

He could not find an answer.

Just then, the phone rang. It was Chloe.

“I wanted to speak woman to woman,” she said.

“Tell me whether he told you to use my address and insurance.”

Chloe chuckled.

“This house will belong to Alistair’s child one day anyway. Don’t act as if we have no connection with it.”

Alistair went pale.

Chloe continued:

“Our child is being born today. I will not hide in a room while you play the perfect wife beside him this evening.”

“Thank you for the advice,” I said and ended the call.

Alistair looked at me.

“Please, don’t do anything thoughtless.”

“Only people who have not spoken to a lawyer act thoughtlessly.”

He did not know that an hour earlier I had already called Evelyn Drake, my lawyer. He also did not know that Evelyn was checking more than just the illegal use of the insurance.

While Alistair looked at his black tuxedo, Evelyn texted me: “I found the foundation charter. Everything will be ready before the meeting.”

I put the phone in my bag and touched the small copper compass my mother had attached to my scarf on my wedding day. Every time I was nervous, its rounded edge calmed my fingers.

Several hours remained until the evening gala. Evelyn said it would be better to meet me at the hotel’s back entrance. When I arrived there, she opened a heavy leather folder and placed her hand on the first document…

Evelyn placed the folder on the table, but did not open it yet. In the hotel’s back room, the coffee machine buzzed, while outside, rain struck the glass.

“Are you ready?” she asked me.

“I have been preparing for this all morning.”

“Then know this: Alistair thought there was one thing you did not know.”

“What?”

Evelyn tapped the folder with her finger.

“Leadership of the foundation does not belong only to the chairman’s wife. You have a vote that his family members cannot cancel.”

My heart tightened.

“And Chloe’s documents?”

“The address, insurance, and financial responsibility are indicated on the same form. This is not a mistake, but a pre-planned step.”

At that moment Alistair called me.

“Where are you?” he asked.

“Where your secrets are turning into documents.”

“Vivian, please, don’t ruin the gala.”

“I am ruining nothing. I am only showing what you have already done.”

I ended the call.

Evelyn opened the folder. My name was written on the first page, and below it was Alistair’s signature.

“This is only the beginning,” she said. “But before we read it, you should know: Chloe told the doctor one more thing.”

“What?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“She stated that the child must already be registered as a Stanford heir…”

“The child must already be registered as a Stanford heir,” Evelyn repeated. “And for that she presented Alistair’s written consent.”

In the foundation’s back room, the clock showed seven. The hands of the golden clock hanging on the wall moved loudly, as if each second were adding another crack to my marriage.

“Did Alistair sign?” I asked.

“Yes.”

The word was small, but a heavy stone fell into my chest.

Evelyn handed me a second sheet. It said that after the child’s birth Alistair assumed full financial responsibility, including housing, medical expenses, and “future rights to the family residence.”

“This house?” I asked.

“It is not mentioned directly. But the wording of the Stanford family property is used. Chloe presented the document to the hospital in this form.”

The door opened and Alistair came in. He was wearing a tuxedo, but his tie was slightly crooked. His face was tired and gray.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“Reading your signature,” I said.

Evelyn placed the document in front of him.

Alistair looked at it and immediately stepped back.

“This was only consent for medical expenses.”

“Here you write that you will provide housing stability for Chloe and the child,” Evelyn said.

“She told me the hospital required it.”

“And why did you provide my address?” I asked.

“I did not know she would use it.”

“But you knew you were signing.”

He lowered his eyes.

Evelyn took out a third sheet.

“There is one more thing. The insurance form submitted by Chloe was not filled out electronically by her. The information was entered from the foundation office, using your account.”

Silence fell over the room.

“I can’t believe this,” Alistair said.

“This is an action carried out in your name,” I said. “And the time, device, and login record remained in the system.”

He looked toward me.

“You think I planned all of this?”

“I no longer think. Now I only know that you created a door through which others entered my home.”

Alistair grabbed the chair. His fingers whitened against the leather.

“Chloe couldn’t have done this.”

Evelyn answered calmly:

“She did. But not alone.”

At that moment my phone lit up. The message was from the foundation’s financial director: “I need to see you urgently. A large sum has been transferred from the account to the maternity center.”

Alistair saw the message.

“It wasn’t me,” he said.

“Maybe,” I replied. “But the money left the account that you control.”

Evelyn walked to the window and raised the blinds slightly. Below, on the other side of the street, a black car stood. Chloe was standing beside it, holding a phone and looking directly at our window.

“Why is she here?” Alistair whispered.

Chloe raised her phone. One sentence was visible on the screen: “If you do not bring me onto the stage today, I will give everything to the journalists.”

Then Evelyn’s phone rang. She answered, listened for several seconds, and her expression changed.

“Vivian, the police have entered the foundation office,” she said. “Someone filed a complaint in your name.”

“Against whom?”

Evelyn looked at Alistair.

“Against Alistair Stanford. Embezzlement and forged signature are indicated.”

Alistair froze.

And I realized that a game far larger than Chloe’s plan had already begun. And the most dangerous thing was that someone needed my ruin…
