Part 4 — When My Husband’s Mother Considered My Home Her Property, I Started Playing by Her Rules and Mauricio’s Face Suddenly Changed

The next morning, at eight o’clock, Mauricio’s phone began ringing continuously. Once. Twice. Then the whole room filled with the sound of the ringtone.

He was sitting on the sofa and looking at the screen.

“Is that your lawyer?” I asked.

“Do not interfere.”

“Yesterday you told me I could not fight lawyers. Why are you not answering now?”

He slid his finger across the call.

A few seconds later, a message arrived.

“I am no longer continuing your case. The documents have already been handed over to the relevant authorities.”

Mauricio threw the phone toward the wall. The screen cracked, but the ringing continued.

The second call was from his father.

“Do not go to the office,” Don Roberto told him loudly. “Two investigators are waiting for you there.”

“Tell them that I know nothing!”

“I already know far too much.”

“Father, help me.”

Don Roberto answered quietly:

“This time you must save yourself by yourself.”

Mauricio fell silent.

I stood in the kitchen and watched him try to regain control. First he called Graciela.

“Mother, tell Nino that everything was a misunderstanding.”

For a long time Graciela said nothing on the phone.

“For years I have covered up your misunderstandings,” she answered at last. “But this time do not even come into my house anymore.”

Mauricio buried his head in his hands.

Then he turned toward me.

“Nino, we can start over.”

“No.”

“I made one mistake.”

“A mistake lasting four months is already a choice.”

“You also entered my parents’ house.”

“Yes. I violated a boundary to show you what your mockery meant. But I did not deceive you, I did not use our money, and I did not hide someone in someone else’s bed.”

At that moment I understood for the first time that we were not alike, despite how many times he tried to equate my actions with his own.

By noon the investigators came. They calmly showed the documents and requested the computer, bank statements, and folders connected with the clients.

!!!  Nechal mě samotnou s nedokončeným bytem a odletěl s matkou k moři, ale po mém klidném telefonátu zbledl

Mauricio raised his voice.

“You are in my house!”

One of the women answered:

“We came from your office. We entered only to take things out.”

She looked toward me.

“Did you arrange this?”

“No. I only did not hide the truth.”

That same evening he was taken to the police station for questioning. There was no arrest. Not yet. But when the door closed, his face looked as if he had understood for the first time that money and a loud voice could not lock everything.

Three days later I listened to his recording in the kitchen of our apartment. A lawyer called me and told me that the call had accidentally been automatically recorded on my computer.

In the recording Mauricio said:

“Do not reveal anything to Nino. If Mother enters her room again, she will think that the family controls her. And on Wednesday everything will be as usual.”

His own voice.

His own words.

I sat down and placed my hands in my lap. The most painful thing was not that he had betrayed me. It was that my fear had become part of his daily plan.

The divorce process lasted eight months.

Mauricio first apologized. Then he blamed me. Then he offered me money, but only on the condition that I remain silent about the clients’ case and Elena.

I agreed to nothing.

In court he could no longer deny the transfers, the correspondence, and the recording. A separate investigation into the clients’ funds continued, while Elena gave an official statement. Mauricio’s lawyer refused to defend him in the middle of the proceedings because he had hidden another document.

Graciela came to court.

She did not sit beside me. She simply stopped at the door.

“Nino,” she said quietly, “I cannot repair my apology.”

“I know.”

“I thought I was protecting my son.”

“Sometimes protecting a person means no longer saving him from his consequences.”

!!!  Mi familia evacuó la casa durante el huracán y me dejó encerrado con los animales, pero al volver mi padre dejó de sonreír

She nodded and left.

After the divorce I sold the apartment. In the very first week I changed the bedroom lock, but what made me happier than the new lock was that the sound of the door opening no longer frightened me in the morning.

I put Mauricio’s things in one empty room. His books, two shirts, the frame with the wedding photograph, and the small elephant-shaped keychain.

For a long time I could not throw away the keychain.

One day, while sorting the box, I took the photograph in my hands. In it, we were both smiling in front of the sea. At that time I believed that his smile was a home.

Now I knew that home is where you can lock the door and sleep peacefully.

Eight months later, at the end of April, I was living in a new city. I had a small studio, trees were visible from the window, and in the mornings the smell of warm dough came from the neighbor’s bakery.

I also started my work again. I was already making pages for large companies, and in the evenings I helped women who were trying to start their own small businesses.

There were two monitors on my desk.

But this time the door of the room was not open to everyone.

My sister’s seven-year-old daughter, Lea, came to me on weekends. One evening she drew a house on a sheet of paper. The house had a large red door, and beside it stood a small man holding a key.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“The guard of the house,” she answered. “He opens the door only when the person inside tells him to.”

I laughed.

“He is a very clever guard.”

“You are like that now too.”

That night I received the last message from Mauricio.

“Let’s start over. Mother has changed too. I have understood everything. Meet me just once.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

!!!  At the Wedding, My Father Grabbed Me by the Hair Over the Refusal of Money, but When He Heard My Four Quiet Words, His Smile Immediately Disappeared

Before, I changed my whole day for one call from him. Now I put the phone on the table, placed Lea’s drawing beside it, and calmly wrote a reply.

“I am not going to return to your life. I wish you to manage being left alone with your own decisions.”

After sending it, I pressed the block button.

I felt neither joy.

Nor revenge.

Only peace.

Several weeks later the first winter snow came. In the morning I opened the window. Cold air entered and left the smell of cleanliness in the room.

I placed the elephant-shaped keychain on the small shelf beside the door. Now it no longer meant Mauricio’s love. It reminded me that once I had my own house key in someone else’s hands, and then took it back.

I attached Lea’s drawing beside it.

The red door.

The little guard.

And the key that belonged only to me.

That morning I locked the door and, for the first time, waited for no one.

Missed the beginning?
