At a Family Dinner, a Woman’s Voice Rang Out from His Phone, but My Calm Answer Suddenly Drained the Color from Silas’s Face

At the family dinner, a woman’s voice came from my husband’s phone: “Darling, I miss you so much, I can’t wait for you anymore…”

Silas was in the hallway at that time, having gone to the bathroom. The phone was trembling on the table, an unknown number glowing on the screen. I do not know why I picked it up. Probably because his mother, sister, and grandmother were sitting opposite me and everyone was laughing peacefully, as if nothing were hidden in our house.

I switched the call to speakerphone.

“Darling, I’m waiting for you at the old place,” a warm woman’s voice sounded.

Even the clinking of a spoon stopped in the room.

Silas’s mother’s face changed. His sister, Elena, dropped her fork from her hand. Grandmother stopped eating so slowly, as if movement were painful.

But I placed the phone face down and drank some water.

When Silas returned, he was drying his hands with a towel.

“Is everything all right?” he asked me. “Did the phone ring?”

There was neither surprise nor fear in his voice.

“It was a wrong number,” I said.

“I see,” he answered and reached for the wine.

That was all.

He did not ask who had called. He did not check the screen. He did not even open the call list.

At that moment I understood that the woman’s existence was not the most dangerous part. The dangerous thing was that Silas already knew who would call him.

I smiled until dessert. I gave Grandmother a piece of cake, and laughing, refused my nephew a third bun. When Grandmother told us with tearful eyes that we were such a good family, I smiled too.

“Indeed we are,” I answered.

The words felt like shattered glass in my mouth.

On the way home, I asked in the car:

“What would you do if one day you felt as though the person you loved had betrayed you?”

Silas laughed.

“You have strange questions. You are very tired.”

Streetlights slipped in through the window, while my wedding ring, which I had bought for him, gleamed on his finger. I had trusted him for five years. When he finished work late, I reheated dinner for him. When he went on business trips, I did not call him excessively. I told myself that success required sacrifice.

When we lost our child, at the twelfth week of pregnancy, I thought we were carrying this pain together. He sat beside me in the hospital, held my hand, and promised me that we would endure everything.

And I believed him.

Two days later, at eleven at night, I opened his locked office drawer for the first time. Under old receipts and tangled chargers, I found a thick business card.

Sarafina Thorne. Vice President of Marketing. Apex medical company.

On the back, in Silas’s handwriting, was an address: Eighteenth Chestnut Street. The Chestnut Tree restaurant.

I photographed the card and returned it to exactly the same place.

Then I met Elena. Her hand stopped midway toward the taco when I asked whether she had noticed her brother’s strange behavior.

“I spoke to him on the phone a few months ago,” she told me quietly. “When you mentioned your name, he immediately got angry with me. He told me not to tell you anything.”

“Where did you see his car?”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“On Chestnut Street.”

That same Saturday, at two twenty-five in the afternoon, I sat opposite The Chestnut Tree. I held a cold glass of lemonade in my hand, while the sun-warmed bricks on the wall gleamed.

Silas’s silver car stopped.

He got out wearing the dark blue coat I had bought him. A woman came out of the restaurant—elegant, in a honey-colored coat, with dark hair loosely tied at her neck.

Silas handed her a small square box.

She opened it. She covered her mouth with her hand.

Then she slipped her arm through his, and the two of them went inside.

I sat there for two hours. When they came out, Silas opened the car door for her with the same careful courtesy with which he had once welcomed me.

After they left, I entered the restaurant. Two cappuccino cups and half a tiramisu remained on the table. Beside the sugar packets lay an empty, dark burgundy velvet jewelry box.

That evening Silas brought Thai food and organic strawberries. Exactly the ones I had mentioned craving a week earlier.

That hurt me more.

It meant that he was still listening to me, even when he no longer recognized me.

For two weeks I said nothing. Then, one Friday, while he was showering, his phone lit up beside the bed.

Only one sentence of the message appeared: “Tomorrow, at two o’clock. At the old place. I prepared something for you.”

That night, when Silas fell asleep beside me, I took the phone into the bathroom and locked the door. His birthday did not work. Neither mine nor our wedding date.

Then I remembered a four-digit number he had once called random.

I held my thumb over the screen.

I entered the numbers. The phone opened. At the very top, pinned above all the conversations, I found one name—Sarafina.

I opened the messages. I read the first sentence, and cold froze in my stomach. The betrayal had only been the beginning…

Sarafina’s messages began with love, but soon their words turned to money.

“Do you still have Maya’s signature?”

“I’ll have her sign tomorrow.”

“What if she finds out?”

“She won’t. She still thinks I’m protecting her.”

I held the phone so tightly that my fingers turned white. Then I found a photo: my identity card, photographed as if it had been sent to someone. Beside it lay a signed form I was seeing for the first time.

Silas had taken out a loan in my name.

The second photo showed medical bills. From the same clinic where I had been treated after losing our child. Sarafina wrote: “The documents are ready. If the company is audited, blame everything on her medical condition.”

My breath caught.

I immediately called Elena.

“Do not speak to me loudly,” I told her. “I need a lawyer who has handled financial fraud cases.”

“Maya, what happened?”

“I don’t know yet, but my husband is preparing to shift a crime onto me in my name.”

In the morning I entered lawyer Nino’s office. She looked at the phone photos and her face hardened.

“We must copy all of this,” she told me. “And now you must not tell Silas anything.”

That same evening Silas asked me why I was quiet.

I smiled at him.

“I’m just tired.”

He kissed my forehead and went into the bedroom. A few minutes later his phone rang. Silas answered, immediately turned pale, and locked himself in the office.

I went to the door.

“Who did you speak to?”

A long silence fell from inside.

Then Silas opened the door, and for the first time I saw that he was afraid.

“Maya, tomorrow you have to come with me to one place…”

Behind him, a legal folder lay on the desk. Nino had told me not to open it, but Silas’s hand was already reaching toward it…

Silas’s fingers touched the edge of the folder, but before that Nino opened the living-room door. Elena stood behind her, holding a small recorder.

“Take your hand away, Silas,” Nino said.

Silas stepped back.

“What are you doing in my house?”

“In the house you paid for partly with my client’s money,” Nino answered calmly. “Now sit down.”

The clock showed six in the evening. Rain struck the windowpanes, and on the table lay the burgundy velvet box I had found in the restaurant. It was empty, but the scent of expensive perfume still rose from its surface.

Silas looked toward me.

“Maya, all of this is a misunderstanding.”

“Then explain why you needed my signature on a loan I did not take out?”

His mouth opened, but he found no words.

Nino opened the folder. Inside were the loan agreement, the company’s bank statements, and copies of my medical records.

“Sarafina Thorne and Silas Mercer illegally transferred four hundred eighty thousand lari from the company’s account,” Nino said. “The money first went to Sarafina’s consulting firm, and then to Silas’s personal account. In order to shift suspicion onto Maya during the audit, they used Maya’s identity and her treatment documents.”

“That’s a lie!” Silas shouted.

Elena switched on the recorder.

Silas’s own voice sounded: “Maya looks for everything inside herself. If I tell her that financial pressure arose because of her condition, everyone will pity her and no one will ask questions.”

The air disappeared from the room.

I was listening to my own husband, who was using my pain as a weapon.

Silas covered his face with his hands.

“This conversation is taken out of context.”

“Shall we listen to the second recording?” Nino asked.

In the second recording, Sarafina’s voice could be heard.

“After the divorce, the car and the house will remain with you. But Maya must sign that she took the money.”

Silas knocked over the chair so that its wooden leg struck the floor loudly.

“I wasn’t betraying her only because I wanted to have everything!” he blurted out.

Elena closed her eyes.

But for the first time I felt no pain. Only clarity came over me.

“You are not angry with me, Silas,” I told him. “You are angry that you could not deceive me.”

Nino took the last sheet from the folder.

“This is the expert report. The signature is forged. It is also confirmed that the medical records were removed from the clinic archive at Sarafina’s request.”

Silas took out his phone and called someone.

“Stop everything right now,” he told them. “Maya knows.”

The woman’s voice on the other side sounded so clearly that we all heard it.

“It is already too late. The police are in the company building.”

The phone fell from Silas’s hand.

But at that same moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered.

“Mrs. Maya,” said a man’s tense voice, “we found another file that Silas hid from you. The file contains information about your child that does not correspond at all to the hospital records. Please come to the clinic tomorrow morning…”

Silas raised his head.

For the first time I saw in his eyes not the shadow of guilt, but the shadow of real panic.

And I realized that money and betrayal were still not the most terrible thing he had hidden from me…
