I went to the hospital to see my husband, but someone else presented herself as his wife and the receptionist’s smile immediately disappeared

I was standing at the hospital reception when an unfamiliar woman claimed to be my husband’s wife before me, and the young employee looked away.

I was holding a Delane’s paper bag, and inside were Nathan’s favorite turkey sandwich and the blue tie that had been left on the bedroom chair that morning. Everyone at Saint Catherine’s Medical Center knew my husband. Nathaniel Pierce was the chief surgeon, and nurses straightened their backs beside him, residents raised their voices, and donors smiled more broadly than necessary.

A twenty-five-year-old girl was sitting at the reception desk. Her small card read: Emily Warren.

“The patient’s or an employee’s name?” she asked me.

“Dr. Nathaniel Pierce. I am his wife.”

Her fingers froze on the keyboard.

Emily first looked at the screen, then at me. A polite smile appeared on her face, the kind a person puts on when intending to gently correct someone else’s mistake.

“That is impossible, ma’am. His wife was here ten minutes ago.”

The noise of the hospital disappeared all at once. I could hear only my heartbeat.

“Perhaps you mean another Pierce,” I said calmly.

“No, exactly Dr. Pierce. Tall, blond, wearing a cream-colored coat. She said that her husband had asked her to pick up documents from the office.”

I carefully placed the bag on the counter.

“Did she sign?”

Emily looked at the visitors’ log and bit her lip.

“I cannot show you that.”

“Nathan always says that the security rules have been tightened,” I smiled. “You probably did the right thing.”

The girl relaxed slightly.

“She signed as Mrs. Pierce. The name… Vanessa.”

Vanessa.

In eleven years of marriage, I had never heard that name. Not among Nathan’s colleagues, not among his patients, not among the people whose birthdays I remembered every year.

“Did she have a pass?”

“She was holding his pass. It was not hanging from the strap.”

My smile did not change.

Three days earlier Nathan had told me that he had lost his pass.

I went up alone in the elevator. My fingers were clasped so tightly that the paper of the bag crinkled. I wanted to call him right there and ask who Vanessa was, but I knew he would not tell me the truth over the phone. Nathan never lied crudely. He cut the truth the way he cut skin in the operating room—precisely, cleanly, and enough that in the end someone else bled.

Marjorie was not in front of his office. The door was locked.

Marriage teaches you more than locks. You know birthdays, weaknesses, passwords, and also where a man hides the spare key.

I found the key under the flower vase.

The office air smelled of lemon disinfectant. The top desk drawer was open. A clear rectangle showed in the dust, where a folder had been. On the label left beside it was written: “Patient Incident Review — Laura Monroe.”

Laura Monroe.

The name told me something, but I could not remember what.

At that moment my phone buzzed.

It was Nathan.

“Where are you?”

I looked at the empty space and texted: “At the hospital.”

Three blinking dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

Then his reply came: “Do not move from the place.”

The door handle slowly went down. Someone outside slid a key into the lock. And I approached the empty drawer, because at that exact moment I noticed that beneath the desk the small metal head of a second, hidden lock was gleaming…

The key went all the way into the lock, but the door did not open. Someone was holding it from outside.

“Elena, it’s me,” Nathan said.

There was no ordinary warmth in his voice anymore.

“Then come in.”

“Open the door.”

“Why is the door to my room locked?”

He was silent for several seconds.

I knelt beneath the desk and opened the small lock. Inside lay only an old voice recorder and a brown card. I turned on the recorder. I heard a woman’s whisper.

“If you are listening to this, you already know that Vanessa is not my real name. Do not trust Nathan.”

My breath caught.

“Elena!” Nathan struck the door with his fist. “Come out right now!”

The woman in the recorder continued:

“Laura Monroe did not die for the reason written in the medical record. I was there. I recorded everything.”

The lock on the door turned.

I hid the recorder in my bag and stared at the door. Nathan entered, with two security employees standing behind him.

“This office is not yours,” he told me.

“But I really am the wife, aren’t I?”

For the first time I saw fear on his face.

“Where is Vanessa?” I asked.

Nathan did not answer me. His phone rang. He looked at the screen and went pale.

The call ended.

“Now she knows everything,” he said quietly.

“Who?”

Nathan looked toward me, as if he had realized for the first time that we were no longer alone in the room.

“Your sister, Laura…”

And just then a woman’s voice sounded from the corridor: “Elena, do not let him open the folder…”

I ran into the corridor and saw a woman by the wall. Blond hair fell over her shoulders, and her cream-colored coat was stained with blood on the right side. It was Vanessa.

“Was Laura my sister?” I asked.

Vanessa nodded.

Nathan stepped between us.

“Elena, step back.”

“For eleven years you hid from me that my sister died in your operating room?”

Vanessa took a folder from her bag. A small burned mark was visible in its upper corner, as though fire had touched the paper.

“Laura Monroe was your sister’s real surname,” she said. “I was her friend and lawyer. On the day the operation was performed, Nathan used the wrong implant. Laura managed to regain consciousness and told me that Nathan knew this.”

“That is a lie!” Nathan shouted. “Her heart stopped before the operation.”

Vanessa turned on the voice recorder.

In the silence, Nathan’s own voice sounded.

“Write in the record that her heart stopped beforehand. If Elena finds out that Laura was talking, everything is over.”

The recorder almost fell from my hand.

Nathan’s face turned gray.

“It has been edited,” he said.

“I took it from your office,” I answered.

Vanessa opened the folder. Inside was a statement handwritten by Laura, dated with the time of the operation, and a photograph in which her heartbeat could be seen on the monitor at the moment when the record had already declared her dead.

“Why did you come today?” I asked.

“Because Nathan found out that I had the recording. He stopped my car on the road. I managed to escape, but the security people found me here.”

Nathan took out his phone.

“I am calling the police,” he said.

“I already called,” a voice sounded from behind.

Chief nurse Marjorie was standing there, holding a small folder.

“Not the police,” she said. “The Prosecutor General’s Office.”

Nathan’s eyes tightened.

Marjorie handed the folder to me.

“They found this at my house this morning. Laura sent it before she died.”

On the first page I saw my signature. Below it was written that I supposedly knew about the surgical error and had taken money in exchange for silence.

“This is not my signature,” I said.

“I know,” Marjorie replied. “But Nathan has already submitted it to the bank, to the court, and even opened an account in your name.”

A message came to my phone from an unknown number: “If you tell the truth, your daughter will no longer be able to wait for you at school.”

Sophie.

My head went dark. Nathan looked at the message and suddenly smiled.

“You see?” he said to me quietly. “You can still lose everything.”

At that moment the sound of sirens came from the lower floor of the hospital. But the worst news Nathan was waiting for that day was not held by the police who came to the door, but inside his own phone…
