At the Family Table They Called Me a Servant, Apologized to Me, but When I Opened the Bag, My Husband’s Smile Froze on His Face

That evening my husband’s family immediately stopped laughing when I left the last loaf of bread bought for the table on the threshold of the house door and calmly said that I would never serve them again.

The smell of fried potatoes and hot spices still hung in the kitchen. Twenty-three relatives were sitting in Galina Petrovna’s large house, but now they were all looking at my back.

“Irina, what do you mean, you will not serve anymore?” Alexander’s voice caught up with me.

“Exactly what I heard.”

“It was just a family joke.”

“It was a joke when Liza called me a servant. It became an insult when you stayed silent.”

Alexander looked away. On his right hand he had a small silver ring, which he always turned when nervous. Now he turned it as if the answer were written there.

For three years I picked Liza up from school, prepared her for her exams, chose her clothes, and listened at night to how she cried over her first love. I had never said that I was her mother. I only wanted to behave like an adult.

But in this house they considered kindness an obligation.

“You are overly sensitive,” Galina Petrovna told me, standing by the door and holding a half-empty glass. “Liza is still a child.”

“She is seventeen.”

“And you are an adult woman. Adults forgive.”

“Adults also apologize.”

Silence fell over the room again. Liza put her phone on the table and, for the first time, did not smile anymore.

“Who do you think you are?” she asked me.

“A person who has the right to respect.”

Alexander sighed quietly.

“Irina, it is not necessary to leave now.”

“For me, it is necessary.”

“We will talk tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow it will already be too late.”

I did not say these words by accident. That morning, at six o’clock, while I was preparing food for everyone, I received a message from my lawyer. It contained only one sentence: “Please do not sign anything for anyone this evening and do not reveal that the documents are already with me.”

I did not understand then which documents he was talking about. I only knew that Nika had been avoiding my calls for three days and was insistently demanding a meeting.

When I returned home, I put the bag on the sofa. As soon as I closed the door, the phone rang.

“Mrs. Irina,” Nika’s voice was tense, “are you already alone?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen to me carefully. Alexander does not know that we have discovered everything about the case left by your father.”

My breath caught.

“Which case?”

Nika was silent for several seconds.

“I should not explain this by phone. I am coming to you. And please, until I arrive, do not touch the dark-green diary lying beside that blue folder.”

I looked toward the table. The diary was lying there. Its leather cover was marked with my father’s handwriting.

The doorbell rang.

Nika could not have arrived yet.

The door handle slowly went down, and Alexander’s voice came from outside:

“Irina, open the door. I urgently need to talk to you…”

I did not open the door.

“Alexander, go away.”

“Mother sent me. They say you left something behind.”

“I left nothing behind.”

Silence fell on the other side of the door for several seconds. Then he said quietly:

“Do not complicate everything. You belong to this family.”

For the first time these words sounded like a threat.

I went to the window. His car stood in the yard, but I also saw Galina Petrovna in the back seat. They had not come just to talk.

The phone rang again. It was Nika.

“Do not open the door,” he told me. “Your father’s diary is together with a letter left for you.”

“What letter?”

“The letter whose existence your husband was not supposed to know about.”

Alexander struck the door with his fist.

“Irina, open up!”

I seized the diary. On the first page I saw my father’s handwriting: “If they ever humiliate you in that house, remember who this house stands on.”

I tore out the next page. A small key was attached inside, and one address was written.

Nika was already coming up the entrance hall, but from below the voice of an unfamiliar man sounded:

“Mrs. Irina? I am a court representative. I have a document for you.”

Alexander stopped knocking behind the door.

I closed my hand around the key and realized that my father had calculated all this in advance…

The unfamiliar man was standing in the entrance hall, and Nika had stopped beside him. In his hand he held a small wooden box, on whose lid my father’s initials were carved.

Alexander rushed to the door.

“Irina, do not open it!” he shouted.

It was the first time I clearly heard fear in his voice.

I opened the door.

“Mrs. Irina, I am an executor appointed by the court,” the man said. “These items are being transferred to you on the basis of an additional part of your father’s will.”

Galina Petrovna’s face changed.

“What will are you talking about?” she asked me.

Nika put the box on the table.

“The will that was drawn up seven years ago and that your family managed to hide only because Irina’s husband had her complete trust.”

Alexander shook his head.

“This is nonsense. Irina’s father left only debts.”

“No,” I said. “That is what you told me.”

Nika opened the box. Inside lay an official certificate, several bank statements, and a letter from my father.

“Irina, if you are reading this letter, it means that after my death the person beside you hid the truth from you. You are the majority owner of my company. I gave Alexander only the right to manage it, not ownership.”

It seemed as if the air disappeared from the room.

“No,” Alexander whispered.

Nika looked toward him.

“She owns fifty-one percent of the company, two warehouses, and this house. During the last two years you have tried to sell the assets without her consent.”

Galina Petrovna grabbed the chair.

“Irina, we are family.”

“Family does not hide millions and then call a person a servant.”

Alexander took a step toward me.

“I did everything for you.”

“You used my trust.”

Nika put the last folder on the table.

“Here are forged minutes, transfers, and a recording of a conversation in which Alexander directly says that Irina must sign the sale, otherwise he will take everything away from her.”

Alexander looked at me, pale.

“Where did you get this recording?”

“From your family chat,” I told him. “Liza sent it by accident. Then she deleted it, but it was already too late.”

Liza, who was standing by the door, began to cry.

“I did not know that it would go this far.”

“But did you know it was a lie when you called me a servant?” I asked.

She lowered her head.

At that moment my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

Nika looked at the screen and suddenly his face changed.

“Answer it,” he told me. “This call may change everything.”

“Who is it?”

Nika leaned toward me.

“The person who was in that room when your father’s will was changed. And she is now fighting for her life in a hospital…”
