Part 4 — At the Family Table They Called Me a Servant, Apologized to Me, but When I Opened the Bag, My Husband’s Smile Froze on His Face

I brought the phone to my ear.

“Are you Mrs. Irina?” a hoarse woman’s voice asked me.

“Yes.”

“I am Tamar. I was your father’s notary’s secretary. I have been planning to make this call for years.”

Alexander tried to listen to the conversation, but Nika raised his hand.

“Do not come closer.”

“Tamar, what happened then?”

The woman on the other side breathed heavily.

“No one forced your husband and mother-in-law to do anything. They simply told me that if I revealed a copy of the document, they would make my son lose his job. I became afraid.”

Galina Petrovna cried out:

“It is a lie!”

“Are you that woman?” Tamar asked. “Then listen to me carefully. I recorded everything.”

Everyone in the room fell silent.

Nika turned on the recording.

For the first time I heard Galina Petrovna’s own voice, saying three years earlier in the notary’s office:

“The girl will understand nothing. Alexander is her husband; she will sign anyway.”

Then Alexander’s voice sounded:

“First I will convince her that everything is in debts. Then we will sell the house too.”

This was my husband.

The man in my kitchen.

The man sleeping in my bed.

The one because of whom I had blamed my own intuition for years.

Alexander turned off the recording.

“Enough.”

“No,” I said. “It is beginning now.”

At that same moment his phone rang. He went over to the wall.

“Mr. Alexander, we are calling from the bank,” a woman’s voice said through the speaker. “Your accounts are frozen. A notification has also been received that the right to manage the company has been suspended immediately.”

Alexander looked at Nika.

“You did this?”

“No,” Nika said. “It belongs to your wife.”

Alexander turned toward me.

“Irina, let us talk calmly.”

“I talked to you for three years.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You made a choice.”

That same evening the police took documents from Galina Petrovna’s house. Alexander tried several times to grab me, but each time Nika stepped in front of me.

!!!  Meine Eltern ließen meine Tochter oben verschwinden, während unten alle auf die Geburtstagstorte starrten – dann verstummte plötzlich das Lachen

“Irina, I am your husband,” he said at last.

“That is exactly why I trusted you.”

His lawyer came the next morning, but did not stay long. After seeing the recordings, bank statements, and forged minutes, he removed his glasses.

“Mr. Alexander, I will not be able to defend you.”

“What are you saying?”

“You acted against my advice and left traces as well. Now find another lawyer.”

Alexander heard his own words from the outside for the first time.

Nika played the recording once more.

“First I will convince her that everything is in debts.”

Alexander hid his head in his hands.

“I did not say it like that.”

“You did say it,” I answered.

“I was angry.”

“No. You had a plan.”

Three weeks later the court returned temporary management of the company and the property to me. The final investigation continued for a long time, but I no longer tried to save them.

This turned out to be the most difficult part.

For years I thought that if I did not leave Alexander, he would become better. Then I realized that a person whom you constantly protect from the consequences of his own lies never looks for a reason to change.

His room was almost empty.

Only one white shirt remained in the wardrobe. On the table lay a photograph of me, which he had taken out of its frame and placed face-to-face toward the wall.

Behind the photograph I found Liza’s old drawing. A little girl was drawn holding a large yellow sun in her hands. Below it was written: “For Irina, when you take care of me.”

I kept the drawing.

At first Liza did not want to meet me. A month later she came to my new apartment herself, in a small town where a river flowed beneath the window.

When she knocked on the door, she was holding two cups of hot chocolate.

“I do not know whether you still want to see me,” she told me.

!!!  Mi padre me ofreció cincuenta mil dólares para que no apareciera con mi uniforme militar en el baile de mi propia familia, sin imaginar que un general convertiría aquella humillación en una trampa para su futuro yerno

“I do not know,” I answered honestly.

She nodded.

“That is fair.”

We sat in silence for a long time.

“If you had not shouted that day, I probably would never have understood what we were doing,” she said.

“My shouting alone was not enough.”

“I know. But for the first time I saw how they looked at you.”

“And how did you look at me?”

Liza lowered her eyes.

“As a person who would always stay. Now I know that people also have the right to leave.”

I said nothing.

Sometimes forgiveness begins when you no longer hurry to answer.

Two months later I opened a small kitchen for the employees in one of the company’s warehouses. In the mornings I prepared coffee myself, but now because I wanted to, not because someone required it from me.

Every evening I returned home, opened the window, and listened to the sound of the river.

The first snow came at the beginning of December.

Liza sent me a new drawing. This time two women were standing on a white street, and a small lamp was burning between them.

Below it was written: “Now we both know where the door is.”

Alexander sent me his last message that same week.

“I lost everything. You are still my family. Come, let us start over.”

I looked at the screen for a long time.

Then I sent only one sentence:

“I am not starting over; I am starting for myself.”

And I blocked the number.

My father’s dark-green diary was still lying on my table. In that diary there was no fear anymore, and no secret. On the last page I made a new entry: “Kindness is a choice, not a debt.”

I went to the window.

Outside, snow was quietly falling on the street, while the smell of coffee stood in the kitchen.

This time no one was waiting at home for me to do something.

I myself was waiting for myself.

!!!  Part 4 — I Heard a Lie When I Returned Home, But Fear Appeared on Patricia’s Face

And for the first time I served no one.

I returned to my own life.

Missed the beginning?
