I Returned Early from Military Service and Found My Daughter Alone, Then My Husband’s Call Silenced the Whole House

A few minutes before the police arrived, I lifted my four-year-old daughter from the dirty floor and noticed for the first time that there was an old, red mark on her wrist.

I still had the airport card in the pocket of my military uniform. I had returned home three weeks early because my commander had given me unexpected leave. I wanted to surprise Lily. I imagined how she would jump onto my neck, while Derek would have coffee waiting for me in the kitchen.

As soon as I opened the door, instead of joy, a sharp smell of rot struck me. The garbage bags were overflowing, black water stood in the sink, and the sound of flies came from the refrigerator. The television was on in the living room, but no one was visible in the room.

“Lily?” I called.

In reply, I heard the sound of something falling onto the floor.

I ran into the hallway and found my daughter beside the cupboard. She was holding an empty bowl of cereal in her hands. Her pajamas were crumpled at the knees, her hair had stuck together, and there was a thick layer of dust on her feet.

“Mom, you really came?” she asked, as if she was not sure that I was real.

I fell to my knees and hugged her. Her body turned out to be unusually light.

“Where is Daddy, sweetheart?”

Lily raised three fingers.

“Three sleeps have passed. Daddy is on a big ship.”

My breath caught.

“Were you alone?”

She nodded and stroked the rim of the bowl with her thumb.

“He told me to be a good girl and not to open the door.”

My hands were trembling as I called emergency services, although six months of military intelligence service had taught me that panic kills decision-making. I gave Lily water in small sips and wrapped her in a blanket. The doctors came in ten minutes. One of them checked her pulse and his face changed.

“Mrs. Nolan, when did she last eat?”

I had no answer.

I had Police Officer Marcus Bell begin inspecting the house. He himself opened the cupboards, while I looked through Derek’s page on my phone. On the screen my husband was smiling on a sunny deck. Beside him stood his mother Patricia, and on the other side was his sister Jenna. Everyone was raising glasses.

Under the photo it said: “The family vacation we deserve.”

Then I entered the bank account. Almost nineteen thousand dollars had disappeared—my military salary, our emergency savings, and the money we had been saving for Lily’s operation.

“Hannah, something is strange here,” Marcus called to me from the hallway. “This lock on the door also has a new latch on the outside.”

At that same moment, the phone rang. Derek’s name lit up on the screen.

I turned on the call’s speaker.

“Hannah, listen to me and don’t interrupt me,” his voice was calm, too calm. “Tell the police that this is a misunderstanding. My sister should take care of Lily.”

“Where are you?”

Silence fell. Then Derek said quietly, almost in a whisper:

“And whatever happens, do not let anyone approach the hallway cupboard. Do not open the door, do you understand? There is in there what is putting everyone in danger now…”

Marcus stopped his hand at the lock. Lily, meanwhile, gripped the sleeve of my uniform so tightly that her nails dug into my skin.

“Mom, a sound comes from there at night,” she whispered.

On the phone Derek’s breathing was becoming faster.

“Hannah, just trust me. Do not open the cupboard.”

“You kept a child hungry for three days, and now you are asking me to protect the cupboard?”

“You don’t know what you are touching!”

“Then tell me.”

In reply I heard only a crunching sound, as if someone was moving beside him. Then the call ended.

Marcus took hold of the door handle.

“First we need a warrant,” he said, although his eyes were already telling me something else. “But we can observe from outside.”

A faint white light came from under the door. There was no window in the hallway of our house.

Lily was taken to the emergency room with the doctors. I looked for a moment at her empty bowl and something broke inside me. Then I turned to Marcus.

!!!  Part 4 — My daughter-in-law told me we no longer had money for gifts, but when I looked at her mother’s gifts two days later, she began to turn pale

“We will open this door.”

“If there is danger inside, we may not have time.”

“My daughter was already in danger. For three days.”

Marcus requested help over the radio. Just then, a child’s quiet crying was clearly heard behind the door.

Marcus drew his weapon.

But I knew that voice was not Lily’s voice…

Marcus knocked on the door twice.

“Police! Everyone inside, make a sound!”

The crying stopped immediately. Such silence fell in the hallway that I could even hear my own heartbeat. The door handle slowly went down, but the door did not open. The new latch was locked from the inside.

Marcus hit it with his shoulder. Once. A second time. On the third удар the wooden frame cracked and the door fell inward.

I did not find clothes in the cupboard. A small monitor blinked on the floor, and a camera hung on the wall. Beside it, in a plastic box, lay several disks and a folder written by hand. The air smelled of burnt plastic and a strong disinfectant.

A little girl was sitting in the corner. She was about six years old. Her knees were pulled to her chest, and she wore a blue bracelet on her wrist.

“Let’s not be afraid,” I said and slowly bent down. “I am Hannah.”

“Will my mother come?” she asked me.

Marcus quickly called child protective services, while I covered the girl with a blanket. Her face seemed familiar to me, but I could not understand why.

When I turned over the first page of the folder, I recognized Derek’s handwriting. It said: “Project Lily—temporary guardianship.”

“God,” I whispered.

On the second page lay a copy of my daughter’s birth certificate. On the third was a photo in which Lily wore the same blue bracelet. At the end were amounts, dates, and the names of strangers.

Marcus turned on the camera recording. Derek appeared on the screen. He was standing in front of Lily and telling her in a stern voice:

!!!  Mi esposo intentó sacarme del hospital con las piernas enyesadas, pero al abrirse la puerta su rostro perdió todo color

“If you tell your mother anything, this girl will disappear too.”

Then Patricia appeared on the screen. She handed Derek an envelope.

“Hannah’s money will no longer be enough,” she said. “Tomorrow you must take the child.”

In the recording Derek nodded and looked at the camera, as if he knew that someday I would see this.

“Hannah,” Marcus put his finger on the paper, “there is another name here too. This child is your husband’s daughter.”

The little girl raised her head.

“Daddy told me that Lily’s mother would come soon and take both of us to a new family.”

My stomach contracted. Derek was not only spending money. He was selling children.

Marcus immediately requested a warrant, but the phone rang. It was an unknown number.

“Mrs. Nolan,” said a man’s cold voice, “if you want your daughter to remain alive and unharmed, do not let anyone touch this folder again. Derek is not on a ship now, but near your house…”
