The call ended, but the unknown voice remained in the hallway for a long time.
Marcus immediately locked the doors and placed two police officers by the windows. I pressed the folder to my chest. The ambulance had already taken Lily and the other girl, but I could still hear their breathing, as if they had not been able to leave the house.
“The illegally obtained recording is not the only evidence,” Marcus told me. “This list is enough for a search and arrest warrant.”
“Where is Derek?”
“We don’t know yet. But now we will find him.”
His words could not calm me. Derek had always managed to present himself as the victim. At school he told the teachers that I was sacrificing my family to my military career. He convinced my friends that I did not come home because I no longer cared about Lily.
Now I realized that all of it was a mask prepared in advance.
The phone came to life again. This time Derek was calling.
“Turn it on,” Marcus told me.
“Hannah, you have gone too far,” he said.
“You left my daughter hungry.”
“I left temporarily.”
“For three days?”
“Patricia was supposed to help.”
“You had a child hidden in the cupboard.”
Derek fell silent.
“She is my daughter,” he said at last.
“And Lily?”
“You had Lily. You can take care of her.”
His voice cracked for the first time, but there was no regret in it. There was only irritation that I had discovered the plan.
“Where is my money?”
“I spent it on the family.”
“On a cruise ship?”
“I did all this for you. If I had not been there, you would never have understood how alone you are.”
Marcus signaled to me with his eyes to continue the conversation.
“Where are you, Derek?”
“I will return home before you.”
The call ended.
Two hours later the police found his car in a parking lot. In the car were Patricia’s suitcase, three passports, and several empty bottles. Derek was arrested at his uncle’s marina. He had a new ticket in his pocket, and the date on it was for that same night.
Patricia came to the station with a lawyer. At first she attacked everyone.
“Hannah is destroying the family!” she shouted. “Derek wanted to save the children!”
The lawyer opened the folder and looked through the copies of the footage. In a few seconds his face turned pale.
“Derek, say nothing more,” he told him.
“You were supposed to be able to defend me!”
“With this recording I can no longer defend you the way you thought.”
For the first time Derek looked at me with fear.
In the same room Marcus played the video. Derek’s own face and his voice appeared on the wall:
“If you tell your mother anything, this girl will disappear too.”
Derek lowered his head.
“This is taken out of context.”
“Then explain it,” I said.
“Hannah, I was just trying to…”
“No. Now for the first time just listen to yourself.”
Patricia’s voice sounded in the video: “Tomorrow you must take the child.”
No one moved in the room anymore. The lawyer put his pen on the table.
“I am no longer participating in this case,” he said. “You both must find another defender.”
Derek grabbed the chair.
“You can’t abandon me.”
“You have already abandoned yourselves.”
Then the police found out that the girl hidden in the cupboard, Mia, was not even Derek’s daughter. Her real father had become suspicious several months earlier that a fake guardianship network was approaching the child. Derek used this information to begin threatening the mother and demanding money. Mia was taken to a temporary shelter, while her family was found the very next day.
I sat all night at Lily’s hospital. The doctor told me that despite severe starvation, her condition was stable. She held my finger and did not let go even in her sleep.
“Mom, will Daddy go to prison?”
Her question was so calm that it struck me more painfully.
“Daddy made a choice whose consequences he must deal with himself.”
“Will you stay?”
“Until you get tired of me.”
Lily closed her eyes.
“I will never get tired of you.”
Three weeks later the court sentenced Derek to imprisonment for crimes connected with children, neglect, and financial fraud. Patricia received a suspended sentence because she cooperated with the investigation and admitted her own role in the crime. Jenna testified that the cost of the cruise trip had been paid from my account.
I did not smile at a single hearing.
When I left the courthouse, I felt only tiredness. It was not a celebration of victory. It was a road that had finally ended.
Derek still tried to contact me. At first he sent me letters. Then through mutual acquaintances he tried to convince me that he had changed.
One evening, in the new apartment where the river could be seen from the window, his voice message arrived.
“Hannah, listen to me at least once. I must return for Lily. You know too that we are a family.”
At that time Lily was sitting at the kitchen table and drawing a house with colored pencils. The house had two large windows, and three people stood at the door.
“Mom, this is us,” she told me. “Here the door is always open.”
I deleted the voice message.
I wrote Derek only one sentence:
“We are no longer a place where you will return.”
Several months passed. I temporarily transferred to another department in the military service, and in the evenings I walked with Lily along the riverbank. She began eating again, her color returned, and every morning she chose for herself which bowl she would have breakfast from.
But I kept one habit. When I returned home, I checked the door lock twice, then immediately opened it.
I brought the small metal handle from the old hallway cupboard with me. The police gave me the belongings, and I could not bring myself to throw it away. I placed it on a small shelf on the wall of the new apartment. Lily stuck a yellow star on it.
On the day of the first snow, she took my hand.
“Mom, are we really home now?”
I looked at the white street from the window, then at my daughter.
“Now we are home.”
That night we left the door open.
The metal handle shone quietly on the shelf.
And for the first time in a long time, I was no longer afraid of anything.
Missed the beginning?
